Abstract |
Measures the extent to which health-care students began their training with compassionate attributes. Defines compassion as an awareness of others and a desire to help, using a non-judgmental approach. Highlights the significance of compassion in health care. Provides a self-administered 'compassion to others' psychometric scale to measure compassionate attributes to 146 students enrolled in the first semester of nursing, midwifery and social work at the Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec). Analyses data using the SPSS and ANOVA for descriptive statistics and predictive information. |

Abstract |
Investigates the logistics and acceptability of an electronic medication dispenser (EMD) within a home-based medication management service as a substitute for face-to-face home visiting, as a means of reminding elderly clients to take their medication on time. Uses a qualitative usability study methodology to conduct the study, centred on a small group of clients receiving the service from a small group of clients receiving the service from a community nursing organisation in Christchurch. Involves patients, pharmacists, nurses and managers of the community nursing service. Identifies critical processes and protocols required to safely support a wider roll-out of the product within the service. |

Examines cultural influences on perceptions and practices of cross-cultural communication among registered nursing staff from diverse ethnicities in NZ. Employs an exploratory approach to obtain qualitative feedback by means of semi-structured interviews with 36 Internationally Qualified Nurses (IQN) and 17 NZ Registered Nurses (NZRN). Uses data from the interviews to construct a questionnaire survey to seek responses from a random national sample of RNs. |

Aims to develop a new empirical method for assessing the similarity of mental models in surgery, focusing on laparotomy; to begin the process of validation of the new approach; and to demonstrate how the new approach could be used in clinical practice. Develops a software application (Momento) to sort key tasks in order to capture the information on mental models regarding task sequence and responsibility. Asks 20 6-person operating room (OR) teams, each comprising 3 sub-teams consisting of anaesthesia, surgery and nursing, to complete Momento prior to 2 simulated emergency laparotomies. Suggests the Momento approach could be used to improve teamwork in OR. |

Surveys nurses at two hospitals during April and May of 2012. Uses bivariate correlations, group comparisons, analysis of variance and multiple regression to analyse the results. Notes that nurses were still experiencing negative emotional effects of the earthquakes and aftershocks of the preceding 18 months. Finds empathy levels and burnout levels were lower than the normative mean, and that empathy and burnout were negatively correlated with age and experience. |

Cites a clear requirement to foster learning during a nurse's development post-registration, while considering how prepared nurse educators were to fulfil their roles as lifelong learning facilitators and mentors. Utilises the perspective of nurse educators employed in District Health Boards (DHBs) geographically isolated from universities providing post-registration learning. |
