Abstract: Incidence of Phlebitis in association with the use of I.V. Infusions was studied. Patients in the I.C.U. with peripheral I.V. lines were studied over a 2.5 week period, a form being completed by the staff. The study established a 20% incidence of infusion phlebitis. The care and observations of intravenous therapy is a nursing responsibility requiring constant vigilance to detect early any complication that may arise

Abstract: In this thesis, the author explores what she terms 'invisible bodies of nursing', which are the physical body of the nurse, the body of practice, and the body of knowledge. She argues that the physical body of the nurse is absent in most nursing literature. Her contention is that the physical body of the nurse is invisible because it is tacit and much nursing practice is invisible because it is perceived by many nurses to be inarticulable and is carried out within a private discourse of nursing, silently and secretly. Nursing knowledge is invisible because it is not seen as being valid or authoritative or sanctioned as a legitimate discourse by the dominant discourse. This analysis is informed by Luce Irigaray's philosophy of the feminine, Michel Foucault's genealogical approach to analysing, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology. The author discusses strategies that nurses could use to make themselves more 'visible' in healthcare structures.

Abstract: In this thesis the nursing roles in respect of tuberculosis in New Zealand from 1928 to 1966 are identified, and then examined by contextualising them in relation to the changing social, political, demographic, scientific and technological environments in which the treatment and prevention of tuberculosis took place. The history of the various institutions is described in order to show some of the circumstances that led to the evolution of the roles of dispensary nurse, district nurse, school nurse, public health nurse, sanatorium nurse, and hospital nurse. 1928 to 1966 covers a sufficiently long period of intensive activity and change in the detection, treatment and research of pulmonary tuberculosis in New Zealand, to enable comparisons between nursing roles to be made. It was found that nurses had an individualised approach to their work. This was defined by the physical environments within which they worked, whether it was a hospital, sanatorium, dispensary, school or in a patient's home. Also, the medical treatments advocated and implemented by the medical practitioners, the rules and regulations which governed the various work areas, and the availability of staff, funds, facilities and resources all had an impact upon how nurses were able to work and how their respective roles developed. In addition, some of the factors which contributed to nurses getting tuberculosis and the initiatives to improve the nurse's conditions of work are examined, because these had an impact on the performance of the nurse's work and evolution of her role. Apart from practical nursing care, nurses also had a role in the on-going inspection, monitoring, notification, emotional support of patients and families, morale boosting and education. Each role had these components. The differences were in the time and emphasis given to each.

Abstract: In this study a questionnaire was designed to survey the incidence of back strain amongst staff members of a geriatric unit. This was completed by 71 staff members of a total of 99 forms issued. It would appear that back strain occurs in 70% of cases, but it is reported in only 8%. Abstract: In this study a qualitative descriptive methodology with focus group interviews was used to explore with users of mental health services, the attitudes, knowledge and skills that they need in mental health nurses. Users of mental health services valued the therapeutic work of mental health nurses, and identified positive attitudes towards users of mental health services as essential in mental health nurses. However, they did not consistently experience a therapeutic approach in their interactions with mental health nurses. In a sociopolitical climate where the views of users of mental health services are increasingly incorporated into education and the planning and delivery of services, there is a need for more research that reflects the perspective of users.

Abstract: In this review, the author illustrates the connection between diabetes, stress and barriers to care, and the impact these have on Maori who have type 2 diabetes. A literature review, which focused mainly on indigenous peoples, and more specifically on Maori was undertaken. The connections between all the factors involved are explored, and combined with reflections from the author's own clinical practice experience. She argues that stress, diet, exercise and barriers to care place a heavy burden on the lives of Maori who live in Aotearoa/New Zealand, suffering from the disease of diabetes. By empowering them to face their situation and see this from a wellness rather than an illness perspective, they can take control of their diabetes and so will live a healthy, longer life, ensuring quality time with their mokopuna/grandchildren.

Abstract: In this research, three female registered nurses relived their experiences of being caregiver to a family member who was ill, elderly or had an enduring illness and explored whether they chose, or felt obligated, to assume the role of caregiver because they were nurses. This research was an exploratory descriptive study utilising narrative as inquiry and the method of story-telling. It is women-centered, taking into account the unpaid role of caregiving within families most often fulfilled by women. Four main themes were identified and renamed to highlight research findings – these were the culture of nursing, silence of the nurses, emotional cloudiness, and the natural role of the nurse. Through this study it is hoped that nurses will be more aware of the impact their caregiving roles have had on their lives. The importance in acknowledging the effects of caregiving, relevance of informing employers to promote supportiveness, implications for workforce development and recognising the loss of objectivity in caring when emotions are involved, are identified in this research. The author suggests that further indepth research about these concepts would be a valuable contribution to the nursing profession and ideas for future research have been identified.

Abstract: In this research two nurse-patients have engaged in a conversation about their experience of 'being nursed'. The project sets out to address the following questions: How might our experiences as nurses who have been hospitalised be drawn upon to influence positive changes in nursing practice? What effect might our experiences of hospitalisation have on us as nurses and on our nursing practice? The study utilises narrative as inquiry and the method of story telling and auto/biography to tell the stories of Maria (a pseudonym) and the researcher herself. This interpretive research has been informed by the feminist process and sits within a postmodern framework. Maria's stories were audio taped and transcribed before being prepared for analysis using 'core story creation', and the process of 'emplotment' (Emden, 1998b). The author's reflective topical autobiographical narrative was constructed through the processes described by Johnstone (1999). Three distinct qualities emerged from both experiences. The first, 'knowing as nurse-patient' contains the three sub-themes of 'having knowledge', 'expectations of being nursed', and 'knowledge gained'. The second distinct quality 'being nursed' contains the two sub-themes of 'feeling safe and cared for' and 'presencing'; and the third, 'not being nursed', contains the four sub themes 'feeling vulnerable', 'invisibility of nurses', 'getting out' and 'feeling let down'. The sub-theme 'getting out' includes three additional sub themes of 'wanting to get out and not wanting to be there', 'leaving and the need for closure' and 'not wanting to go back'. The author notes that nursing does make a difference to patient care. However, for patients to receive therapeutic care, new graduate nurses must be preceptored/mentored by experienced nurses in supportive programmes. Suggestions for further research have been identified.

Abstract: In this research report, a resident reveals the challenges associated with firstly becoming a nursing home resident, and then trying to establish a new sense of 'home'. The story supports a conclusion that nurses' knowledge of the unique 'admission story' of each resident, and their individual understandings of home, is essential in promoting their ongoing comfort. Although approximately 30,000 older adults live in residential aged care, little research has been done on their experience.

Kerr, R. C. (2006). Is the graduate nurse work-ready for emergency nursing?.
Abstract: In this research paper for a Master of Nursing (Clinical), the author suggests that graduate nurses can successfully adapt to emergency nursing when supported with intensive domain-specific transition programmes to complement the national nursing entry to practice (NETP) programme in New Zealand. This outcome conflicts with the present traditional emergency department recruitment strategy that nurses must have two years acute care experience. The graduate believes they are prepared for practice for any healthcare setting but do need time to resolve the rift between theory and practice. This research project confirms the perpetuation of experienced nurses' perceptions that graduates are not work-ready but are unrealistically expected to hit the floor running following ad hoc orientation ranging from three days to four weeks. By creating domain-specific programmes with a minimum twelve-week staged rotation orientation package, graduate nurses can be nurtured as emergency nurses. The influential role of the organisation and experienced nurses is vital to limit reality shock and complement NETP. Preceptorship and mentorship programmes promote the graduates' confidence in themselves to become competent team members. Limits to this research are the non-differentiation between nurses new to emergency nursing and the graduate nurse in the published studies. Assumptions have therefore been made regarding successful transition in regard to newly qualified registered nurses in the emergency department. Further study and evaluation applicable in the New Zealand context is also recommended by the author where anecdotally only a few emergency departments are involved in socialising graduate nurses into the workforce regardless of the urgent need for more first-year-of-practice clinical placements.

Abstract: In this project the author reveals how she is observing and thinking as she cares for people who are dying. She records her reflections and insights and reveals that there is life right up to the moment of death, having observed terminally ill patients choosing the precise moment to die. She describes her observations of these moments by using poetry and stories, and explores the implications for her practice as a result. The author presents her reflections using an individualistic, reflective and exploratory perspective which is informed by the work of nursing scholars. This paper is framed using the metaphors of a journey and a window to indicate the reflective process that the author used to journal her observations in practice over time.

Abstract: In this paper, the critique of the mental health component of comprehensive nursing education and the questions that it raises are explored from historical, structural and ideological perspectives. In order to locate the past and highlight its significance to where psychiatric/mental health nurses find themselves today some of the history of the asylum system and the development of psychiatric nursing in New Zealand within these structures are presented. Ideological changes to the way mental health was thought about, and responded to, have had considerable impact on where psychiatric nurses practiced, how they practised and what they were named. This created the need for a different kind of nurse and has led to changes in the education of nurses. The structural influences on the training and education of nurses are identified through relevant reports and their recommendations and significance in relation to psychiatric/mental health nursing are examined. Issues deriving from the critique of undergraduate psychiatric/mental health nursing education highlight the urgent nature of the crisis and draw out the multiple and competing discourses that inform the education of nurses. In acknowledging that the crisis can be viewed from multiple perspectives the need for responses from multiple levels involving the Nursing Council of New Zealand, the Ministry of Health, the Mental Health Commission and nurses in education and practice are recommended.

Abstract: In this paper, the author explores the concept of 'professional terrorism'. He exposes discrimination against male nurses as being a form of professional terrorism, primarily as it is enacted through use of language. He presents the concept of horizontal violence as a way to understand why nurses, as a marginalised group, perform oppressive acts towards male nurses, who are similarly oppressed. He outlines the cost of such a culture on nursing practice and presents strategies for change.

Abstract: In this paper, literature related to childhood obesity in New Zealand and internationally is explored to identify current issues, and the implications for nurses in community based child health practice are discussed. Themes that emerged from the literature relate to the measurement of obesity, links between childhood and adult obesity and issues for families. Studies that investigated maternal perceptions of childhood obesity found that mothers identified their child as being overweight or obese only when it imposed limitations on physical activity or when the children were teased rather than by referring to individual growth graphs. The implications for nursing in the area of child health practice are discussed. Understanding of the complex and emotive issues surrounding childhood obesity is required when devising health promotion strategies.
