Abstract: This paper describes a survey undertaken with postgraduate nursing students in a university-based school of nursing in 2002 to establish their access to and use of computers and information technology for study. Whilst there was minimal flexibility and use of technology to support student learning for postgraduate nurses in the school, the university proposed increasing flexibility across all courses. This is in part a response to the increased internationalisation of education and developments in technology affecting programme design, delivery and support that can benefit teachers and students. The author notes that the findings of this survey form a basis for planning the introduction of flexible learning. Results indicated that not all students have convenient access to technology for study purposes, nor are they at the same level in terms of using technology.

Abstract: This paper describes a collaboration between library staff and nurse educators, where information literacy skills are strengthened and embedded in the curriculum. A case-study approach was used with both quantitative and qualitative data. An anonymous questionnaire was distributed to all nurses enrolled in graduate courses in the second semester of 2002. Interviews were then undertaken with library staff. It was found that the university library services were not used by 43% of graduate nursing students . The library staff responded by developing a number of initiatives which aimed to improve awareness of services, access and provide education in a bid to improve literacy skills.

Abstract: This paper continues presentation of the findings of a North Island based research project that explored the impact of clinically focused postgraduate education on advancing nursing practice. Like their international counterparts, increasing numbers of New Zealand nurses are enrolling in advanced practice programmes. Yet, despite international evidence supporting the usefulness of Masters level preparation for advancing clinical practice, questions about the need for such development persist. This paper argues that postgraduate education contributes to the development of courage and that this, in turn, is essential to overcoming the barriers that currently constrain the advancement of nursing practice.

Abstract: This paper analyses how the programme co-ordinator for a diploma in mental health nursing used the Instructional Design process in order to identify aspects of teaching and learning that could further enhance the student development of critical thinking. Theoretical understandings of constructivist learning environments are outlined, and translated to this programme. Tools and techniques such as learning strategies, scaffolding, coaching and modelling are explained.

Abstract: This paper addresses the concept of truth, and debates who should tell it and how it should be told. It explores the cultural aspects of knowing the truth about dying. The question of whether nurses have a moral obligation to tell the truth is explored, and suggests the lack of New Zealand research in this area should be addressed.

Abstract: This nursing study seeks to understand the experience of one group of people with chronic renal failure using renal replacement therapy, Pakeha men living on home haemodialysis. It is based on the assumptions that people living on dialysis have distinctive experiences that are characterised by common concerns reflecting their shared position as subjects of renal illness and therapy. In order to understand the experience of people living on dialysis, this study develops a critical interpretive approach, seeking the participant's own interpretation of their individual experiences. The experiences are then reinterpreted them from a critical standpoint, recognising that they can only be adequately understood by contextualising them. This enables the researcher to discern the common perspective underlying them in contrast to the dominant professional viewpoint in the renal setting. The concerns identified include symptoms from chronic renal failure and dialysis, limitations resulting from the negotiation of the therapeutic regime into their lifestyle, their sense of ongoingness and uncertainty of living on dialysis, and the altered interrelationship between autonomy and dependence inherent in living on dialysis. The study suggests that the individual accounts can be understood as resulting from the interaction of the various dimensions of their own personal social locations, including their gender and ethnicity, with the concerns of client discourse, reflecting their common position as people living on dialysis. The author concludes that one implication of this understanding is that the role of nursing in the renal setting can be articulated as a response to the experience of the person living on dialysis. The nurse can support the renal client in seeking to integrate the requirements of the therapeutic regime into their personal situation.

Abstract: This literature review presents evidence on health professionals' practice in hand washing. The research was primarily quantitative and consistently showed that health professionals did not have a lack of knowledge, but that hand washing was not always done. More qualitative research is required to investigate reasons for this and possible interventions.

Abstract: This literature review focused on research that primarily addresses the issues related to medications that arise in tertiary care facilities. It finds that investigations into medication errors have primarily focused on the role of nurses, and tended to identify the nurse as deliverer of unsafe practice. Over the past few years a shift in how medication errors are understood has led to the identification of systems-related issues that contribute to medication errors. The author suggests that nurses should contribute to initiatives such as the 'Quality and Safe Use of Medicines' and develop nursing led research, to address some of the safety related issues with a view to enhancing patient safety.
