Abstract: A nurse presents research and her own experiences of contracting. Contracting, as defined in this article, refers to a nurse not employed permanently on a wage. It covers agency nursing, short and long fixed-term contracts and secondments. The author identifies the need to continue to develop professionally, which is now a mandatory requirement under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance (HPCA) Act. Contractors have little, if any financial support to develop professionally, and time taken to do courses is not paid. Taking study leave within a contract may also not be an option. Options for managing professional development in these conditions are offered, including goal setting, investing in education or training, and considering some longer contracts. Practical financial advice and examples are given, including managing accounts and consideration of employment law. The author recommends that skilled nurses looking for interesting ways to develop their careers and to branch out in an entrepreneurial way should seriously consider taking up contract work.

Abstract: A nurses working party was formed by the primary health care SSDG in 1979 to investigate the feasibility of integrated community based nursing services. A six month trial was held in a mainly urban area (population 5637) testing these ideas in 1980. Using the existing time of the four nursing services in the area a team approach was used with all nurses being responsible to a coordinating nurse. The present role of the public nurse and district nurse was integrated – this new nurse was called a community health nurse. These two nurses worked from a base located in te trial area. Liaison and coordination were established with the Plunket and practice nurse. The results of the trial enabled the primary health care SSDG to prepare a plan on community based nursing services

Abstract: A paper intended to inform paediatric nurses and influence service policy and management, adapted from a presentation at an inservice education study day for nurses at Wellington Hospital. The paper grew out of the findings of a small research project undertaken by the author as part of nursing practice in a paediatric ward of Wellington Hospital. The observations of the stress in the experience of infants and parents and the ambiguities inherent in the relationships between parents and nurses were the basis for arguing for changes in nursing practice and ward management.

The nature of hospital nursing practice was described in themes of a generic process of nurse-patient care that articulates a distinct specialism of hospital nursing, whatever the hospital department in which nurses hold positions.

Abstract: A participatory approach, grounded in both critical social and feminist research, was used in this study of seven women who claim being lesbian as part of their identity. With the objective of providing information to enhance safe care provision for this marginalised group, the study explored factors which hindered or facilitated these women's sense of safety related to health care. The findings indicate that barriers to receiving health care exist for these women. As there is little local or international research on lesbians and healthcare, this work offers a starting place for future New Zealand nursing research involving lesbians. The authors encourage other nurses to explore previously ignored sections of our society in order to strive for safety for all those whom nursing serves.

Patients complied with therapeutic objectives to control urinary incontinence when they participated in the assessment phase and when 24 hour Nursing support is available. Abstract: A pilot study was conducted to identify nurses' attitudes and concerns pertaining to the care of people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Data was collected using an anonymous voluntary questionnaire , which was made available to all nurses at a Wellington area Health Board (New Zealand) hospital. Of 652 nursing staff, 286 (51%) responded, of which 74 (25.9%) had previously attended an HIV/AIDS workshop for Area Health Board staff. Of those staff handling blood, 132 (49.4%) always wore gloves, and only half of the respondents (n=148.51%) treated all body fluids as potentially HIV positive. The possible attrition rate from nursing positions in the canvassed hospital ws 2.8%, with a further 43 (15.0%) undecided about resigning from their post. Only 36 nurses (12.5%) believed the employer did not provide adequate safety measures. The provision of education regarding HIV/AIDS, by the employer, ws considered inadequate by 61 (21.3%) respondents. This study demonstrates that further safety and education needs should be attended to or reinforced

Abstract: A preceptorship programme of 100 hours duration was developed and delivered by a nurse education institute, in consultation with a health care organisation. The purpose of the study was to examine preceptors, preceptees, and nurse managers' preceptions of the preceptor role and factors which influenced the performance of preceptors. Using focus groups, participants were each asked to identify the outcomes of the programme in practice. Study findings highlighted the importance of formal preceptor preparation, personal and professional development of the preceptors, and the promotion of positive partnerships between nurse educators and nurse practitioners. The need for formal recognition of the preceptor role in practice, particularly in relation to the provision of adequate time and resources, emerged from the study. The research findings enabled the development of an evaluative model of preceptorship, which highlights the intrinsic and extrinsic factors impacting on the preceptor role
