Abstract |
It has been shown that intensive management of diabetes with type 2 diabetes is effective and has led to wider use of insulin. The conversion of patients from oral medication to insulin is usually managed in primary care. The study discussed here aimed to explore how patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) perceived insulin. The study was conducted in 2009 in an urban general practice in a large town in New Zealand with more than 300 patients with type 2 diabetes. A qualitative study was conducted with face-to-face interviews with 13 participants. The question focused on insulin initiation, lifestyle and routine. The transcribed responses were subject to thematic anaylsis. Interviews showed participants felt restricted by the prospect and eventuality of the routine and restrictions of being on insulin. Results show there needs to be a greater emphasis on the disease being progressive. This study provides the ground work for developing resources that will benefit patients with T2DM. |

Abstract |
Measures the extent of care planning and support for health goals within a sample of Maori/non-Maori people with long-term conditions (LTC). Compares those with and without care plans, and those with and without support for health goals, with respect to health, and experiences with general practice. Patients enrolled in a MidCentral District Health Board regional LTC programme were recruited into the region's 'Talking about Health' study to explore LTC care from patient and provider perspectives by means of a questionnaire. |

Abstract |
Measures the extent to which health-care students began their training with compassionate attributes. Defines compassion as an awareness of others and a desire to help, using a non-judgmental approach. Highlights the significance of compassion in health care. Provides a self-administered 'compassion to others' psychometric scale to measure compassionate attributes to 146 students enrolled in the first semester of nursing, midwifery and social work at the Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec). Analyses data using the SPSS and ANOVA for descriptive statistics and predictive information. |

Abstract |
On September 3, 2010, the night nurses at Christchurch Hospital in New Zealand went to work unaware of the personal and professional challenges that were about to unfold in the following hours. This paper, derived from the results of a phenomenological research project, explores the issues that helped and hindered nurses during that night shift and in the three days following the 7.1 earthquake, which struck in the early morning of September 4, around 20km from the hospital. This narrative article allows the world to hear the voices of Christchurch nurses who were providing care in the first 24 hours and during the three days following that major seismic event. |

Abstract |
Public health nursing has been an integral part of health delivery services in New Zealand since the development of a public health service in the early 1900s.
This paper details a qualitative study of a practice innovation undertaken by a group of nurses to reconnect with their school communities. Questions focused on whether the relationship between the public health nurses and their school communities improved as a result of the innovation and what impact, if any, the project had on the public health nurse team itself. Community of practice theory revealed the importance of collaboration and the benefits that can accrue from this approach for both nurse and school communities. |

Abstract |
Reports a study exploring family experiences of stroke during the first six months following a stroke. Performs a hermeneutic phenomenological study in which four participants from two Auckland families are interviewed in 2011 and 2012, at three time-intervals within the first six months post-stroke. Identifies three themes of the families' experiences: loss of a life once lived; navigation of an unfamiliar path; re-creation of a sense of normality. Stresses the importance of contact with the health-care team in facilitating the transition to post-stroke life. |

Abstract |
Reports nurses' perspectives on their role in the extended Well Child/Tamariki Ora service to teenage mothers which has been delivered by the Royal NZ Plunket Society since 2011 to adolescent mothers in Hawke's Bay. Focuses on what nurses consider necessary for this client population and the challenges nurses face. Evaluates the service at two intervals : first when the babies were six months old, and second when they were three years. Conducts interviews to identify the factors essential to successful service delivery : trusting nurse/client relationships, strong inter-agency relationships, team-work and support. |

Abstract |
Reports on a collaborative project that explores trans-disciplinary understanding of the implications of learning English for the health and well-being of refugees. Argues that English literacy is a significant factor in health literacy and access to health care. Uses secondary analysis to analyse primary research with 60 predominantly female adult refugees aged 18 to 64 years. Highlights the experiences of these English language learners and reflects on their relevance for primary health care and nursing practice. |
