Abstract: This article reports one aspect of a phenomenological study that described the lived experience of mothering a child hospitalised with acute illness or injury. The significance for mothers that nurses do the 'little things' emerged in considering the implications of this study's findings for nurses in practice. Seven mothers whose child had been hospitalised in the 12 months prior to the first interview agreed to share their stories. The resulting data were analysed and interpreted using van Manen's interpretation of phenomenology. This description of mothering in a context of crisis is useful in the potential contribution it makes to nurses' understanding of mothers' experience of the hospitalisation of their children. It supports the philosophy of family-centred care and highlights the ability of individual nurses to make a positive difference to a very stressful experience by acknowledging and doing 'little things', because it is the little things that matter to the mothers of children in hospital.

Abstract: This article reports the implementation of a collaborative project undertaken to monitor and improve the effectiveness of the prescribing practicum papers delivered within two Master's degree programmes in advanced nursing practice. The recent introduction of Nurse Practitioner registration in New Zealand has resulted in the development of a number of Master's degree programmes in which students can complete a Nursing Council of New Zealand approved programme for prescribing. For the study, a developmental action research approach was used. Data were collected through interviews with practicum students, their medical supervisors and academic staff. Formative findings were progressively used to refine delivery of the practicum papers and a thematic analysis of summative findings identified areas for further improvement. The findings suggest that the processes being implemented are developing well. The researchers recommend that further education is required to clearly differentiate medical and advanced nursing roles. They recommend that greater attention needs to be paid to the preparation of medical supervisors and, most significantly, revision of funding is required to more equitably support the ongoing development of nurses for advanced practice roles.

Abstract: This article reports the results of a research study undertaken to examine how nurses manage their professional and personal selves while working in small rural communities. The participants were a small group of rural nurses on the West Coast. The rationale for the study was the long-term sustainability and viability of the service to this remote area. The research showed that the rural nurse specialists' role is a complex and challenging one, performed within the communities in which nurses live.

Abstract: This article reviews the development of the New Zealand nursing workforce, which has been shaped by social, political, scientific and interprofessional forces. The unregulated, independent and often untrained nurses of the early colonial period were succeeded in the early 1900s by registered nurses, with hospital-based training, working in a subordinate role to medical practitioners. In the mid/late 1900s, greater specialisation within an expanding workforce, restructuring of nursing education, health sector reform, and changing social and political expectations again reshaped nursing practice. Nursing now has areas of increasing autonomy, expanding opportunities for postgraduate education and leadership roles, and a relationship with medicine, which is more collaborative than in the past. Three current challenges are identified for nursing in New Zealand's rapidly evolving health sector; development of a nursing-focused knowledge culture, strengthening of research capacity, and dissemination of new nursing knowledge.

Abstract: This article seeks to investigate the attitude of nurses and midwives to the withdrawal of care from sick neonates. Advanced technology results in the survival of increasingly premature babies with extremely low birthweights and this has inevitably led to an increase in the ethical dilemmas faced by neonatal staff as to whether continued treatment is actually in the best interests of these infants. Part 1 reviews the literature on this subject. Part 2 describes the results of a survey carried out in a New Zealand NICU.

Abstract: This article summarises the current level of knowledge regarding dietary effects on serum cholesterol. Information from a literature review was used to design a table that identifies how changes in diet and activity can alter components of a person's lipid profile. Nurses can use the resulting table as a simple tool to give clients targeted education based on their individual cholesterol results. This tool illustrates that not all dietary recommendations to the public are beneficial to serum cholesterol levels and it also explains why popular diets such as the Atkins, Mediterranean, and glycaemic index / load can produce more cardio-protective profiles than the traditional low fat diet.

Harding, T. S. (2008). Men's clinical career pathways: Widening the understanding. Coda: An institutional repository for the New Zealand ITP sector, 22(3), 48–57.
Abstract: This article, drawn from a larger study, reports on the factors that have influenced the choice of a group of New Zealand male nurses' clinical career pathways. Using discourse analysis, interview data from 18 participants were analysed and related to existing literature on male nurses. The analysis revealed that the predominance of men in selected areas of nursing can be attributed to multiple factors including: socialisation pressures that are grounded on gender stereotyping, a desire for challenge, homosocial tendencies, and the belief that multiple work experience equips them to be better nurses. The results challenge essentialist readings of masculinity within the context of nursing and identifies challenges for nursing education and the profession to enable men to contribute more widely to nursing.

Abstract: This book covers obstetrical care from a nursing perspective at the Dunedin Hospital's Maternity Units. The researcher found little information on the two lying-in (maternity) wards of the first two Dunedin Hospitals. The book presents historical records outlining obstetric nursing procedures and maternity culture at the Dunedin Hospitals, The Benevolent Institution, The Batchelor Maternity Hospital, and Queen Mary Hospital. It covers cultural, social and legislative changes over the period, and examines conditions and pay for nursing staff across this time. A chapter on the evolution of baby care looks at changes in acceptable practices around nursery care, breast and bottle feeding, and medical procedures. The book has an extensive list of appendices, including staff lists, training notes for staff, duty lists, and interviews with staff and patients.

It also provides an insight into that web of relationships between the professional body, NZNA, the Department of Health, service delivery and education.

Abstract: This case study outlines the care of Mr. M, a sixty-six year old ventilated patient admitted to an Intensive Care Unit for management following coronary artery grafts. Mr. M's health history and risk factors are explored, in particular how they contributed to his presentation. Mr. M's post operative problems are identified and the rationale for his management is discussed with emphasis on the nursing care provided.

Abstract: This chapter describes the development of a nurse-led after-hours telephone triage service in a rural secondary hospital in the Hawke's Bay District Health Board area. This service was a response to the health restructuring in the 1990s, which had led to the shift of secondary services out of the rural areas, and workforce recruitment issues. Secondly, it discusses the process and findings of a research project undertaken to identify and describe telephone callers' reported outcomes after using the service. The study found a high level of satisfaction amongst callers and a high level of compliance to advice.

Abstract: This chapter explores the concept of islands particularly in relation to rurality, individual and community identities, and nursing. She explores commonalities between islanders and rural peoples in areas such as identity, isolation, and health, and outlines the impacts this has on rural nursing practice and competencies. A case study of a nurse on Stewart Island is briefly discussed.

Abstract: This chapter firstly offers background information in relation to palliative care and the role of women as providers of care in the home setting. Secondly, it discusses a study that evolved from a trend the author observed as a district nurse providing community palliative care in rural New Zealand and from New Zealand literature; that the majority of carers of the terminally ill in home-settings are women. The aim of this research study was to offer insights into the requirements of caring for a dying person at home and provide information to assist nurses working in the community and other women who take on the caregiver's role.

Abstract: This chapter firstly presents the development of a mobile operating theatre project, which was implemented in 2002 to provide rural day-stay surgery. Secondly, it discusses the process and findings of a research project undertaken with the purpose of evaluating a perioperative (theatre and recovery) reskilling programme offered to 42 rural nurses from nine secondary hospitals, conducted over nine months in 2001. The training was given to nurses prior to the introduction of a mobile operating theatre service, and was seen as a key part of the service contract.
