Abstract: New Zealand's older population is gradually increasing. This will men the number of people with problems related to psychological and general well-being will also rise. When compared to women, men do not live as long, are more likely to die from intentional injury and use primary health services less. There is a paucity of research on older men, particularly within a New Zealand context. Because nurses work closely with people in primary, secondary and tertiary care settings they are well placed to undertake research and utilise research findings from studies relating to the older adult to promote health and well -being. The intention of the present study was to gain a greater understanding of those factors which impact on the well-being in older men. Based on Wan, Odell and Lewis's (1992) model of general well-being, mental, social and physical well-being indicators were investigated to examine their relationships to overall psychological well-being and physical health.The data for the present study was collected from a non-probability sample of 217 males (over 65 years) residing in the Wanganui area. Multiple regression analysis reveled that of the mental, social and physical indicators only satisfaction with social supports and number of visits to the doctor in the previous 12 months were significantly related to psychological well-being, and number of medications and illness/disabilities were significantly related to physical health as measured by self ratings of health.Findings are discussed in relation to the literature. It ids clear that nurses, and other health professionals, need to be aware of the relationship between objective health status and subjective well-being, and the distinction between the quality and quantity of support in order to provide effective care to older men. Finally the general limitations and future research implications are discussed

Abstract: Notes an increased demand for research nurses and performs a literature review to define more clearly the role they play coordinating clinical trials and managing associated patient care. Discusses professional issues associated with the role and examines findings against competency requirements for registered nurses as set out by the Nursing Council of New Zealand. Identifies professional issues and perceived barriers as well as potential strategies to strengthen and promote the research nurse role.

Abstract: Nurse migration flows in and out of New Zealand are examined to determine impacts and regional contexts. A descriptive statistics method was used to analyse secondary data on nurses added to the register, New Zealand nurse qualifications verified by overseas authorities, nursing workforce data, and census data. It found that international movement of nurses was minimal during the 1990s, but from 2001 a sharp jump in the verification of locally registered nurses by overseas authorities coincided with an equivalent increase in international registered nurses added to the local nursing register. This pattern has been sustained to the present. Movement of local registered nurses to Australia is expedited by the Trans-Tasman Agreement, whereas entry of international registered nurses to New Zealand is facilitated by nursing being an identified “priority occupation”. The author concludes that future research needs to consider health system and nurse workforce contexts and take a regional perspective on migration patterns.

Abstract: Nursing in New Zealand has been a recognised profession for one hundred years. Throughout this time the profession has made a significant contribution to the health of communities, nationally and internationally. Despite the obvious effort and achievement, the author suggests that the evidence of this contribution is not well known. She goes on to say that nurses, now as never before, are challenged to show how they 'add value' and to explain why nursing expertise is essential to safe service delivery. Finding a way to communicate this contribution has been identified as one of the most important issues facing the profession. This thesis explores the concept of contribution and presents a model, the 'Contribution Model', to show how nursing can articulate the action and achievements that show how nursing professionals have and will continue to contribute to health gain in New Zealand. Through the application of the 'Contribution Model' and framework presented in this thesis, nursing is shown to have made a contribution to health gain by using the broad range of knowledge, skills and experiences in a wide range of settings, to provide care wherever and whenever required. Case studies and scenarios from history, observation and prediction are used to show how the actions and achievements of nursing meet the expectations of individuals, the community and society: past, present and future.

Abstract: Nursing literature reflects that nurses have been exploring and experiencing the process of clinical supervision for well over a decade. Nurses in the United States, United Kingdom, Scandinavia, and Australasia have written much over the past fifteen years. However, the author notes that nurses grapple with what clinical supervision is within nursing development and disquiet continues to emerge in the literature. This literature review expands on themes that surround this disquiet. These centre on continued confusion and lack of clear definition; whether psychotherapy is implemented under the guise of clinical supervision, who uses it, and the dearth of empirical evaluation of its effectiveness. The lack of significant empirical evidence of its ability to assist practitioners to deliver improved patient/client care continues despite claims of improved professional and personal development, therapeutic relationship, and occupational stress management. These claims come from both supervisees and supervisors. The manner in which clinical supervision is portrayed in nursing in that it is frequently referred to as a support system, rather than one of learning a complex set of communication skills is also highlighted. The continued debate on what model(s) best suit nurses, or whether line management should provide clinical supervision as a means to ensure quality standards and control over nursing practice and optimal patient care is discussed. Whether nursing should stop borrowing from other fields and develop their own model(s) is also raised. Two emerging stances focus on a process that is practice-based as identified by senior staff and management, or one that continues along the lines of what psychotherapy has developed with practitioner-identified developmental needs. These issues raise many questions for further development in nursing, one being are nurses developed enough in their self-awareness to understand what they are to adopt into their practice? Authentic voices from those nurses experienced in the practice of providing and receiving clinical supervision, are shaping therapeutic practice for nurses in the future, and continue to sharpen the debate. Some reference to unpublished data and local practice in the Wellington area have been included as a stimulus for further incorporation of clinical supervision in local practice development.

Abstract: Nursing shortages, technology, advances in genetics and the knowledge explosion are trends that have an influence on the nursing profession in the future. This article will examine these trends and give an overview of what it may be like to nurse in an acute-care hospital in the year 2020. The impact of leadership, management and political influences will also be discussed. The American concept of 'Magnet' hospitals will be described as one possible solution to the issues that affect the nursing profession in New Zealand.

Abstract: Nursing the Stranger You Know demonstrates how combining aspects of nursing theory, the work of Ken Wilber, a leading writer in the field of transpersonal psychology and my own reflections have enhanced how I am able to experience and practice nursing in a primary health care setting.This study acknowledges and values the power of the connections which link us all together. The greatest strength of this work is that it shows, through the use of personal writing, how it is possible to nurse beyond the present and beyond the obvious when clinical, theoretical and self knowledge are all equally respected and incorporated into nursing practice
