Argues that nursing discourse marginalises and undervalues tikanga. Explores the experiences of Maori registered nurses (RN) using a kaupapa Maori, mixed-method approach. Surveys over 300 Maori RNs about career and professional development, use of tikanga, cultural identity, and racism/discrimination at work. |

Offers a NZ perspective on direction and delegation, a professional competency required of all NZ nurses. Explores nurses' perceptions about their direction and delegation experiences using a narrative approach, reflecting the importance of story in nursing. Uses the methodology and methods of narrative research to uncover how Enrolled and Registered Nurses understand the knowledge, skills and attitudes required during delegation interactions and how they applied this understanding to their communication. Identifies eight patterns, presented as eight narratives, that emerged from interviews with Enrolled and Registered Nurses, and the implications for nursing practice, research, policy design, and nursing education. |

Abstract |
October 2003 marked the centenary of Wellington district nursing. Annie Holgate, a 'trained, professional' nurse, was employed to care for the sick poor in 1903. The Wellington St John Ambulance District Nursing Guild funded district nursing for over fifty years. The first president, Sarah Ann Rhodes, left a legacy of a solid financial and administrative base for the whole of the Guild's existence. From 1945 the Wellington Hospital Board assumed responsibility for district nursing and expanded the service to the greater Wellington region. In 1974 the Community Health Services were formed, with Pauline MacInnes as the nurse leader. Expansion of healthcare in the community ensued, with district nurses pivotal to client-centred, community-based, collaborative healthcare. This service was dismantled in the wake of health sector restructuring in 1989. The philosophy and operation of the Community Health Service of this period bears a striking resemblance to the current concept of Primary Health Care. Primary sources from Wellington St John, Kai Tiaki and data from official publications were used to compile this history. Emergent themes are the autonomy of district nurses' practice, the invisibility of district nursing and the impact of visionary leadership. All have implications for the future of district nursing. District nursing, initially dependent on philanthropy, has been publicly funded in New Zealand since 1944. District nursing is now an essential component of health care. |

Objective; The objective of this study is to determine if attending a nursing education session on menopause has an impact on women's management of their menopausal symptoms and consequently their quality of life for women aged 40 to 60 years. The hypothesis is that women attending education sessions will start or increase health promotion activities which will reduce menopausal symptoms and thus improve their quality of life.Design and method; Two questionaires were given to the women on the day of the education sessions and another questionnaire was sent to the participant three months later. The sample of 30 completed questionnaires includes feedback from Pacific Island women. A combination of quantitative and qualitative methods were used. The measure of quality of life has been based on the level of impact of menopausal on each women's life before the education session and three months later.Results; Initial analysis indicates that diet, exercise and time out were most commonly reported health activities utilized for relief of symptoms with HRT and herbal remedies used less often. Three months after the education session there was a significant reduction in the impact of symptoms in most categories with 140 incidences of total disappearance of symptoms, 24 incidences of reduction of symptoms, 17 incidences of symptoms increasing while 36 symptoms remained unchanged. Only one woman reported that she continued to have no control over her symptoms while the rest of the sample indicated that they had some or total control. The most common changes in health promotion activities were reduction in caffeine, exercise, relaxation and lubrication with sex. Herbal, homeopathy, dietary and hormone treatment rated low in health activities after the three months.Conclusion; Initial analysis indicates that menopausal symptoms has significantly improved for the majority of women who attended the nursing education session |

Nursing students have only recently learnt in-depth physical assessment skills within degree programmes in New Zealand. The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe the experience of learning physical assessment skills for the first time from the student's experience. In exploring this experience it was hoped to uncover some of the factors, beneficial or not, which influence their learning process. Data was collected by two methods. Firstly through two non-participant observations of a class of sixteen pre-registration male and female nursing students at an urban tertiary institute. Secondly through taped in-depth interviews with a female and a male student, from the group, individually and then together. The data was analysed using coding categories suggested by Bogdan and Biklen (1992) and emerging themes related to the process of learning new knowledge and skills. The four themes identified were: students working at learning, tutors facilitating learning, students facilitating learning and learning in clinical practice |

Abstract |
Nursing literature reflects that nurses have been exploring and experiencing the process of clinical supervision for well over a decade. Nurses in the United States, United Kingdom, Scandinavia, and Australasia have written much over the past fifteen years. However, the author notes that nurses grapple with what clinical supervision is within nursing development and disquiet continues to emerge in the literature. This literature review expands on themes that surround this disquiet. These centre on continued confusion and lack of clear definition; whether psychotherapy is implemented under the guise of clinical supervision, who uses it, and the dearth of empirical evaluation of its effectiveness. The lack of significant empirical evidence of its ability to assist practitioners to deliver improved patient/client care continues despite claims of improved professional and personal development, therapeutic relationship, and occupational stress management. These claims come from both supervisees and supervisors. The manner in which clinical supervision is portrayed in nursing in that it is frequently referred to as a support system, rather than one of learning a complex set of communication skills is also highlighted. The continued debate on what model(s) best suit nurses, or whether line management should provide clinical supervision as a means to ensure quality standards and control over nursing practice and optimal patient care is discussed. Whether nursing should stop borrowing from other fields and develop their own model(s) is also raised. Two emerging stances focus on a process that is practice-based as identified by senior staff and management, or one that continues along the lines of what psychotherapy has developed with practitioner-identified developmental needs. These issues raise many questions for further development in nursing, one being are nurses developed enough in their self-awareness to understand what they are to adopt into their practice? Authentic voices from those nurses experienced in the practice of providing and receiving clinical supervision, are shaping therapeutic practice for nurses in the future, and continue to sharpen the debate. Some reference to unpublished data and local practice in the Wellington area have been included as a stimulus for further incorporation of clinical supervision in local practice development. |

Nursing is increasingly using holistic interventions. Some research validating these interventions has been conducted. However there was no nursing research for these interventions with women with breast cancer. This research explored the experience of one womean who was diagnosed with breast cancer and who actively chose to have these interventions as an adjunct to the medical treatment.It was a single subject phenomenological study, effectively being a pilot study. Data was collected through unstructured interview, participant observation and review of the nursing notes. Interpretative analysis techniques were used to obtain the results. Three themes of the experience of the subject were identified as:1. maintenance of the locus of control with the subject,2. the choice of a health professional with philosophical base similar to that of the subject and3. maintenance of a focus on healthy living.These interventions were perceived as beneficial by this subject. This research demonstrated that further study on the effectiveness of holistic nursing interventions with women being treated for breast cancer is indicated |

Nursing in New Zealand has been a recognised profession for one hundred years. Throughout this time the profession has made a significant contribution to the health of communities, nationally and internationally. Despite the obvious effort and achievement, the author suggests that the evidence of this contribution is not well known. She goes on to say that nurses, now as never before, are challenged to show how they 'add value' and to explain why nursing expertise is essential to safe service delivery. Finding a way to communicate this contribution has been identified as one of the most important issues facing the profession. This thesis explores the concept of contribution and presents a model, the 'Contribution Model', to show how nursing can articulate the action and achievements that show how nursing professionals have and will continue to contribute to health gain in New Zealand. Through the application of the 'Contribution Model' and framework presented in this thesis, nursing is shown to have made a contribution to health gain by using the broad range of knowledge, skills and experiences in a wide range of settings, to provide care wherever and whenever required. Case studies and scenarios from history, observation and prediction are used to show how the actions and achievements of nursing meet the expectations of individuals, the community and society: past, present and future. |

Nurses at a New Zealand Metropolitan Hospital were surveyed to determine whether the following factors affected their desire to participate in continuing education. Age, Family responsibilities, reading of Journals/Health literature related to Nursing, attendance of in service/staff development programs, careers aims and intended number of years to remain in Nursing. 30 Nurses were requested to participate in the research project. They were either registered General and Obstetric Nurses or Registered Comprehensive Nurses and 15 worked full time while 15 worked part time. Null hypotheses were formulated and tested because it is recognised that Nurses have a professional responsibility to maintain their knowledge and expertise and to do this in a Health Care system and society that is continually changing there must be a commitment to life long continuing education. Therefore , I thought it would be of interest to determine whether certain factors influenced Nurses' desire to participate in continuing education. With the factors of Age, Family responsibilities, hours of work, number of years registered reading of Journals/Health literature related to Nursing, and intended number of years to remain in Nursing there was no significant difference (p> 0.10) in the desire to participate in continuing education, as was Nurses basic qualification (p< 0.05) With the factor of attendance of in service/ Staff development programs there doesn't appear to be any significant difference and with career plans the sample expected frequencies were too small for statistical analysis |

Abstract |
Nurse migration flows in and out of New Zealand are examined to determine impacts and regional contexts. A descriptive statistics method was used to analyse secondary data on nurses added to the register, New Zealand nurse qualifications verified by overseas authorities, nursing workforce data, and census data. It found that international movement of nurses was minimal during the 1990s, but from 2001 a sharp jump in the verification of locally registered nurses by overseas authorities coincided with an equivalent increase in international registered nurses added to the local nursing register. This pattern has been sustained to the present. Movement of local registered nurses to Australia is expedited by the Trans-Tasman Agreement, whereas entry of international registered nurses to New Zealand is facilitated by nursing being an identified “priority occupation”. The author concludes that future research needs to consider health system and nurse workforce contexts and take a regional perspective on migration patterns. |
