Abstract |
Kai Tiaki, first published in New Zealand in 1908, provides a means of communication among New Zealand nurses. It is currently the journal of the New Zealand Nurses Organisation members and previously was aligned to the New Zealand Trained Nurses' Association in the 1920s. This dissertation examines what nurses write about professional development through the pages of Kai Tiaki. Two time periods are examined, 1920 to 1930 and 2000 to 2006.
Central to the discussion on professional development is post-registration education. Post-registration education in nursing commenced in New Zealand in 1928, and has progressed to the current day where nurses can engage in post-graduate nursing to master and doctoral level. Kai Tiaki provides a channel for nurses to discuss and debate their thoughts on post-registration and post-graduate education. Two key themes emerge from analysis. Firstly, the survival mode of nurses highlights oppression as a contributing factor to professional development. Secondly, examining the role of the New Zealand Trained Nurses Association (1920s) and the New Zealand Nurses Organisation (2000s) presents an understanding of the political nature of the journal itself and how this influences professional development. This dissertation provides critical reflection on professional development for nurses through the pages of Kai Tiaki and provides suggestions for future research. |

Analyses the data using Boyatzis' (1998) approach and identifies two primary themes providing insight for nurses working with Maori women smokers: transmission of whanau values; and factors crucial in influencing change. |

Abstract |
Explores the challenges encountered by nurse educators who seek to assess aspects related to emotional competence in nursing students. This emotional competence includes nurses managing their own emotional life along with the skill to relate effectively to the multiple colleagues and agencies that nurses work alongside. The research was designed to explore the views of nurse educators about the challenges they encounter when seeking to assess a student's development of emotional competence during the three year bachelor of nursing degree. Focus groups were used to obtain from educators evidence of feeling and opinion as to how theory and practice environments influence student nurses' development of emotional competence. The process of thematic analysis was utilised and three key themes arose as areas of importance to the participants. These were personal and social competence collectively comprises emotional competence in nursing; emotional competence is a key component of fitness to practise; and transforming caring into practice. The findings of the study indicate a need for definition of what emotional competence is in nursing. It is argued that educators and practicing nurses, who work alongside students, must uphold the expectation that emotional competence is a requisite ability and should themselves be able to role model emotionally competent communication. |

Abstract |
Examines the role of interpersonal relationships on patients' experiences during first time acute hospitalisation. Involving 12 first time acute medical and surgical admission patients, it was developed from a wider study exploring patients' overall experiences. Using a qualitative methodology with data collected by means of personal stories and semi-structured interviews findings suggest that patient vulnerability is reduced through supportive interpersonal relationships and that it is nurses who play a key role in developing and maintaining these relationships with patients. |

Abstract |
Drawn from a larger study, this article reports the experiences of a group of male nurses regarding the use of intimate physical touch. Using discourse analysis, interview data from 18 male nurses were analysed and related to existing text on men as nurses. The analysis reveals that although touch is important in nursing care, it is problematic for men because discourses have normalised women's use of touch as a caring behaviour and have sexualised men's touch. Participants described their vulnerability, how they protected themselves from risk, and the resulting stress. The complicity of nurses in sexualising men's touch and the neglect of educators in preparing men for providing intimate care are revealed. A paradox emerged whereby the very measures employed to protect both patients and men as nurses exacerbate the perceived risk posed by men carrying out intimate care. The authors suggest that deconstructing and reframing prevailing discourses around nursing, gender, and caring involving touch can help to legitimise men's involvement in physical caring. |

Abstract |
Critical Comparative Nursing Assessment (CCNA) is a theory about how the competence of completing Bachelor of Nursing students in New Zealand is determined. Semi-structured, audio-taped interviews and field notes were used to collect data from twenty-seven nurses with experience in undertaking competency assessment. A Glaserian grounded theory approach was used to guide the data collection and analysis. This utilised the processes of constant comparative analysis, theoretical sampling and saturation to generate a middle range substantive grounded theory. This is presented as a model consisting of four emergent categories that explain how nurses formulate professional judgements about competence. These are a) gathering, which describes the processes used to collect evidence of practice to inform decisions; b) weighing up, which explains how evidence is analysed using the processes of benchmarking and comparative analysis; c) judging brings into focus the tensions inherent in making professional judgements about competence and how nurses formulated these, and d) moderating, which describes the processes nurses use to validate decisions and ensure that professional responsibilities and public safety are upheld. The basic social psychological process of comparing integrates these categories to explain how nurses resolve the tensions associated with making decisions about competence. This research presents a new way of viewing and understanding how nurses assess competence. It identifies where the challengers and tensions related to the assessment of competence lie and suggests strategies that if implemented, the author suggests could further enhance the validity and reliability of assessment outcomes. |

Critical care outreach is part of a new approach to manage all critically ill patients, regardless of where they are located in the hospital. It is the complete process of care that focuses on individual patients needs rather than on beds and buildings. There has been a proliferation of research literature since critical care outreach teams were introduced and subsequently required to provide robust evidence in the form of research to prove the effectiveness of their service. The research conducted by nurses has largely focused on phenomenological inquiry and has utilised methodologies such as questionnaires and interviews. |
