Abstract: This paper traces the emergence of categories of nurse over the last hundred years from the time that the Nurses Registration Act became law in 1901. Insights from the work of Michel Foucault are utilised to show how nurses and nursing have been historically shaped and positioned. It is suggested that the recent endorsement by the Nursing Council of New Zealand of the concept and title of 'nurse practitioner' represents an opportunity for nurses to imagine what might be constructed for their roles.

Abstract: At Whitireira Community Polytechnic the curriculum philosophy for the Bachelor of Nursing Degree Programme is based on the Treaty of Waitangi, which provides a framework to articulate the concepts of Partnership, Governorship, Advocacy and Empowerment. This paper will describes a research study that aimed to explore the phenomenon of empowerment from the perspective of the student nurse.Using grounded theory methodology, emancipatory and feminist philosophies. Six year Two nursing participants were interviewed and asked to define the term empowerment and give exemplers of moments when they had been empowered in a teaching/learning context. Analysis of data led to the discovery of a theory and development of a theoretical model that described the conditions and consequences that led to empowerment or disempowerment for the student.The theoretical model will be presented and explained, and the conditions that enhanced empowerment will be explored. Recommendations from the research included the need for relevant preparation for students prior to clinical placement, preparation of clinicians through preceptor pregrammes, greater awareness by registered nurses of the communication that is effective in supporting student nurses and support for assisted reflection for students following clinical placements. It was further recommended that the theoretical model be tasted in other contexts

Abstract: The authors examine gender based disparities for academics with respect to remuneration, academic grading and Perfomance Based Research Fund (PBRF) scores, whereby women do less well than men in each of these areas. In this article individualised explanations for the failure of women to progress are set in the context of a critical exploration of the PBRF evaluation methodology. It is argued that both academia and the PBRF research assessment exercise embody a form of academic masculinity that systematically disadvantages women in general and nursing in particular.

Conducts on online survey of members of the diabetes nurse specialist section of NZNO. Analyses the results descriptively, finding a statistically significant relationship between being a specialist and the intention to prescribe. Avers that for diabetes nurse specialist prescribing to continue, the resources for supervision must be taken into account in workforce planning.

Phillips, B. N. (2005). A survey of mental health nurses' opinion of barriers and supports for research. Nursing Praxis in New Zealand, 21(1), 24–32.
Abstract: This paper reports the findings of a preliminary survey of two district health boards, which shows that high workloads and lack of relief staffing appear as the greatest hurdles to mental health nurses participating in practice-based nursing research. A further constraint on their participation is lack of research expertise and experience. Consultative discussions with senior mental health nurses support these conclusions. In this paper, mentoring and flexible research designs are promoted as possible ways of overcoming these barriers.

Abstract: The author backgrounds the development of the role of an innovative Nurse Researcher (Emergency Medicine) role at Christchurch Hospital. She describes the emergency department and the factors leading to the creation of the role. Specific nursing research projects are reviewed, and the nature of nursing in relation to research is discussed. The author argues that the nurse researcher is integral to the expansion of evidence-based nursing, and that the role of Clinical Nurse Researcher in the emergency department has resulted in a higher profile for research, and the gradual integration of research as a clinical skill with direct practical relevance.
