Abstract: Explores family-inclusive practice in Adult Community Mental Health in a District Health Board. Focuses on what adult community mental health nurses and clinical managers consider to be barriers and facilitators to family-inclusive practice. Explores community mental health nurses' and clinical managers' perspectives of family-inclusive practice through semi-structured interviews using a descriptive qualitative design.

Abstract: Argues that teaching de-escalation skills early in the nursing programme is vital for student safety and later retention in the nursing workforce. Sets out to determine the efficacy of communication training to teach nursing students agression-management skills while on clinical placement. Designs a quasi-experimental design using pre- and post-tests of communication competence following an education module delivered as part of the curriculum.

Abstract: The well known premise that 'healthy children grow into healthy adults' should reinforce the need for us to engage with parents and caregivers to ensure that we support them with meeting their child's health care needs. This scholarship enabled the author to see what the UK, Sweden, the US, and Canada were doing to strengthen and support children under five and their families across the continuum of care. Abstract: This paper describes how a new framework for clinical nursing education was introduced at Counties Manukau District Health Board. The project was initiated in response to the significant legislative and post registration nursing education changes within New Zealand. The journey of change has been a significant undertaking, and has required clear management, strong leadership, perseverance and understanding of the organisation's culture. The approach taken to managing the change had four stages, and reflects various change management models. The first stage, the identification process, identified the impetus for change. Creating the vision is the second stage and identified what the change would look like within the organisation. To ensure success and to guide the process of change a realistic and sustainable vision was developed. Implementing the vision was the third stage, and discusses the communication and pilot phase of implementing the nursing education framework. Stage four, embedding the vision, explores the process and experiences of changing an education culture and embedding the vision into an organisation. The paper concludes by discussing the importance of implementing robust, consistent, strategic and collaborative processes that reflect and evaluate best educational nursing practice.

Abstract: This dissertation is a review of evidence underpinning the recommendations for pressure ulcer prevention from four national guidelines frequently used as a foundation for best practice. The focus is on grade-1 pressure ulcer prevention for “at risk” patients, in the acute environment. Rationale: Prevention is better than cure. While preventive strategies maybe effective are they supported by evidence? Results: The strongest evidence for best practice appears to be limited to an established fact that standard hospital mattresses should at least be replaced by high specification foam, pressure reducing mattresses for patients “at risk” or vulnerable to pressure ulcer development. Repositioning, skin assessment, skin protection and maintenance, traditionally the basis of pressure ulcer prevention, appear to have a paucity of strong supportive evidence. Further evidence is emerging on clinically important areas such as erythema and mattresses. Implications for Nursing: The organisational or ministerial support for education of the multidisciplinary team, especially nurses in risk assessment and prevention strategies. This support is required both in release time and finances for education and in adequate funding for preventive strategies. The author concludes that strong evidence to support the recommendations of the guidelines appears to remain limited, particularly in the acute environment. Expert opinion would appear to remain the basis for current best practice for pressure ulcer prevention. The volume and consistency of this evidence worldwide is substantial and adds validity to the recommendations. Best practice includes firstly risk assessment, skin assessment, maintenance of skin temperature, moisture, and condition, and the importance of repositioning, in conjunction with an appropriate support surface. However gaps remain in the supportive evidence in many of these fields. Advances in practice include pressure relief or reduction considerations for all surfaces the patients encounter. There appears to be no gold standard for prevention of pressure ulcer development.

Abstract: This thesis explores three Muslim women's experience of childbirth, in a setting surrounded by health professionals who largely have little understanding of their culture. Various forms of narrative such as a letter, excerpts from conversations, and interviews, have been used in presenting this research. The women's stories reveal that giving birth in a cross-cultural setting is stressful. The women had to adjust to an environment which challenged their beliefs and values, in one case with no extended family or cultural support. This stress is long lasting as evidenced in the women's stories. Given the opportunity to tell their story, all the women highlighted both the positive and negative aspects of their birth experiences. This thesis identifies situations that heightened the vulnerability of the women, and highlights the uniqueness of each woman. It concludes by identifying recommendations and reading material for nurses and midwives in education or practice.
