Abstract: This study explores the phenomenon of a personal exploratory field visit to HIV programmes in Malawi and how that informs the author's future plans to work cross-culturally with HIV. He uses hermeneutic phenomenology with the guidance of Heidegger and Gadamer, and draw on Ackermann, Hill, Maluleke, Moltmann, and Thielicke for theological direction. This study analyses how personal formation takes place and how the meaning of that experience can inform future cross-cultural interaction. The data of this study is drawn from a range of people interviewing 'me'. This includes a pre and post interview in relation to the author's three week exploratory visit to Malawi, and recorded daily reflections during the visit. Upon return he was interviewed about the experience by ten people from the following areas: nursing, counselling, development, theology, business, medicine, clergy, an Expatriate Malawian, and a women working from a Maori paradigm. These interviews focused on the author's experience with questions framed from the interviewer's specialty area. The transcripts become further data for this study. The findings of this thesis suggest that people wishing to work cross-culturally need to understand their motivation for their work, and understand who they are before entering a foreign land. This transformative journey also needs to continue as part of the process of working with people because we can only be effective with change if we are listening and hearing the other's perspective. It is in being open to this difference between persons that we continue to find ourselves. While perhaps we have a tendency to want to make everybody like us, we can only grow into our full potential in relationship with truly different others. Tensions experienced demonstrate that there is a complex need to understand how the context controls how HIV is perceived. This requires uncovering some of the deeper issues of HIV and culture, and knowing how to conceptualise these in both positive and informative ways. This thesis asks four key questions for the global-co-worker to work through before embarking on cross-cultural mission: 1. How do you know you should go?; 2. How are you going to make a difference?; 3. Who are you going to be?; and 4. What will sustain your involvement? The author's own experience has drawn me into a deeper awareness of the need for a vital connectedness of faith, hope and love underpinning the everydayness of such an experience.

Abstract: This chapter reviews some effects of the growth of tourism, including adventure tourism and the numbers of tourists over 50, on rural nursing practice. Tourism contributes to socio-cultural change within a community, and health resources that previously met the needs of the local community may not meet the expectations of growing numbers of tourists. The transient visitor includes both the tourist and the seasonal worker, and has become a feature of rural nursing. Major effects on rural nurses include the increased volume of work, the advanced scope of practice required to meet more complex needs of visitors, and challenges to personal and professional safety.

Abstract: The aim of the study was to explore how practice nurses perceive engagement in Peer Learning and Review Groups impacts personally and professionally on their clinical practice. An anonymous self-administered postal questionnaire was completed by 55 practice nurses who attend Peer Learning and Review Groups in the South Island. A mixed method design was utilised to obtain both qualitative and quantitative data. Practice nurses considered group attendance was important for professional development with the majority perceiving that their attendance had a positive effect on their clinical practice. The nurses perceived clear linkages between the significant learning that occurred in the groups and changes in delivery of patient care. Additional benefits included improved collegial relationships, professional awareness and personal growth. The author concludes that, together, these findings underline the importance of Peer Learning and Review Groups as an effective tool for ongoing personal and professional development within nursing.

Abstract: This research is an exploration and interpretation of the lived experiences of family members since they lost a close family member to suicidal death. The findings have implications for nurses and counsellors working in the area of suicide bereavement. Heidegger's hermeneutic phenomenology was utilised and informed by van Manen's and Benner's work. Data from in-depth interviews with six participants, the researcher's journal entries and published literature were analysed. Findings gave rise to a grief model where suicide survivors moved through four modes of being-in-the-world characterized by 13 lifeworlds or themes. Surviving suicide was a transformative process that in time enabled survivors to discover new ways of understanding and relating to the world.

Abstract: Argues that the concept of cultural safety (CS) has been appropriated from an indigenous-led bicutural context to an inclusive cross-cultural framework for working with diverse patient populations. Investigates nurses' understanding of the 'Guidelines for Cultural Safety, the Treaty of Waitangi and Maori Health in Nursing Education and Practice' published in 2011 by the Nursing Council of NZ. Conducts a mixed-methods survey using both closed and open-ended questions to gauge nurses' confidence in applying the guidelines and their view of their relevance. Describes differences between NZ Registered Nurses (RN) and Internationally Qualified Nurses (IQN) in their understanding of CS. Argues that the CS model should be by Maori, for Maori.

Abstract: This paper reports on research into print media representations of industrial disputes in Canterbury in 2001, when mental health nurses undertook a variety of strike actions after stalled negotiations with the local district health board. One response to these actions was the temporary reduction of many of the regions' mental health services. The researchers identified themes of juxtaposed but largely deprecatory images of both mental health nursing and of consumers of services. Some professional nursing voices were given print space during the strike; however, these were largely incorporated into existing discourses rather than offering a nursing viewpoint on the strike. The researchers suggest organisational efforts to focus on ways of ensuring that mental health nurses are seen as a legitimate authority by the media.

Abstract: 'No suicide contracts' take the form of a 'guarantee of safety', along with a 'promise' to call specified persons if the suicidal ideation becomes unmanageable for the person concerned. They are commonly used in community crisis situations with suicidal people in New Zealand. This article describes and analyses the use of 'no suicide contracts' in these settings. It is argued that the theoretical base (transactional analysis) of the 'no suicide contract' is likely to be deleterious in the community crisis situation.
