Abstract |
The researchers present a survey of a sample population of 32 advanced practice nurses (APN) in the US about their experiences of acquiring and implementing prescriptive authority. The issues relevant to nurse practitioners in New Zealand are discussed, around acquiring knowledge and education, relationships with other professionals, establishing the role, and retaining the nursing role. The intent and scope of APN prescribing in the US is also discussed. |

Abstract |
This research aimed to assess the evidence for benefits and risks of positive pressure mechanical valve (PPMV) intravenous access ports on central nervous system devices (CVADs) in children. PPMVs on CVADs have been promoted as preventing occlusion and the need for heparin flushing. A search for primary research to March 2010 was conducted using MEDLINE, EMBASE and CINAHL. There is sufficient evidence that some models of PPMV intravenous access ports on CVADs, when flushed with normal saline, are associated with increased bloodstream infections in children. Further research is required. |

Research into the effects of dialysis treatment on Maori patients living in rural Northland has already brought changes to practice just one year after the research was completed. Li-Chin Shih completed a thesis entitled “Impact of Dialysis on Rurally Based Mäori Clients and Their Whänau” in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Nursing, The University of Auckland, 2009. Abstract |
The aim of this research was to explore what influences registered nurses (RNs) to have the annual influenza vaccine. In the past, influenza vaccination of health care workers has been identified as the primary method of preventing influenza transmission to at-risk groups that, by virtue of illness, congregate in and around hospitals.
Findings showed that some RNs have confidence in the influenza vaccine being effective in preventing influenza infection; however there remained a high proportion of RNs who thought that the vaccine could or might cause influenza. Participants had incorrect knowledge and beliefs about the influenza vaccine, infection and cross infection. |

Undertakes a study to ascertain the experiences, perceptions and assumptions of patients and their family caregiver(s) about the use of a syringe driver in palliative care. Enrols hospice cancer patients who use syringe drivers to provide continuous delivery of drugs. Conducts interviews with 27 individuals: 12 patient/family caregiver pairs, and 3 caregivers. Uses thematic analysis to apply codes to data to reveal shared versus unique experiences. |

Abstract |
A clinical audit was undertaken to assess the diagnostic skills of the nurse colposcopist measuring colposcopy: histology: cytology correlation. At National Women's Health the first New Zealand nurse colposcopist training programme was developed in 2000. A retrospective audit of the colposcopy clinical records was performed during the nurse's training programme between July 2000 and March 2002. An 82% (82/100) histology: cytology: colposcopy correlation was achieved by the nurse in the third phase of her training programme. The results are comparable with other reported studies involving medical and nurse colposcopists. Expertise in colposcopy examination can be incorporated into the broader role of a Nurse Practitioner working in the area of women's health. |

Abstract |
The author argues that the framework of competencies required for advanced nursing practice should include a moral dimension in order to take account of relational as well as functional competencies. There is no recognition of the relational competencies required to practice caring as a moral imperative. The Nursing Council of New Zealand expects that nurses will practise 'in accord with values and moral principles'. The paper explores the history of two nursing discourses, that which sees nursing as a functional occupation and that which emphasises the relationship between nurse and patient. A practice exemplar is used to demonstrate positive outcomes from advanced relational competencies. |

The author presents a project to increase enrolments of women aged 60-69 years in the cervical screening programme. The programme included provision of packages comprising fliers, counter signs, stickers, postcards and pens to 1387 women's groups or locations where women gather. The author collates and analyses calls to the advertised 0800 telephone number, smear tests at the Well Women's Nursing Trust, and enrolment rates on the Cervical Screening Register from June to August 2001. |
