Abstract: The aim of this study was to examine nursing in New Zealand and to see whether aspects of the work environment are associated with health status. A total of 225 registered nurses in a general hospital completed the Revised Nursing Work Index (NWI-R) and Medical Outcomes Study (MOS) 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36). Ratings indicated that the New Zealand hospital environment was characterized by less autonomy and control and better nurse-physician relations than in USA hospitals. Results of correlations demonstrated that more positive ratings of the three workplace attributes were associated with better health status amongst the nurses. The results of regression analyses were indicative either of a confounding relationship or of a mediating relationship such that nurses' relations with physicians, administration and other departments mediate the associations between autonomy, control and health status.

Abstract: Explores the subjective experiences of patients, patients' family/whanau members, and health-care professionals (HCP) when bad news was delivered to patients about their cancer within the surgical departments of MidCentral District Health Board. Gathers and compares multiple perspectives and makes recommendations for practice that align with the goals of those involved in the project. Utilises a qualitative approach with the epistemological and methodological basis informed by interpretative phenomenological analysis. Collects data through semi-structured interviews with 10 patients, 6 family members, 5 surgeons and 6 nurses.

Highlights the association between poor performance of NTS with adverse patient events. Conducts the study in four surgical wards in a metropolitan hospital, using observation and semi-structured interviews with RNs.

Abstract: Argues that the concept of cultural safety (CS) has been appropriated from an indigenous-led bicutural context to an inclusive cross-cultural framework for working with diverse patient populations. Investigates nurses' understanding of the 'Guidelines for Cultural Safety, the Treaty of Waitangi and Maori Health in Nursing Education and Practice' published in 2011 by the Nursing Council of NZ. Conducts a mixed-methods survey using both closed and open-ended questions to gauge nurses' confidence in applying the guidelines and their view of their relevance. Describes differences between NZ Registered Nurses (RN) and Internationally Qualified Nurses (IQN) in their understanding of CS. Argues that the CS model should be by Maori, for Maori.

Demonstrates that the ability of older practitioners to adapt to meet the ongoing physical demands of practice and their shifting workplace environment determines whether they will be valued at work and remain in their roles.

Abstract: Nurse migration flows in and out of New Zealand are examined to determine impacts and regional contexts. A descriptive statistics method was used to analyse secondary data on nurses added to the register, New Zealand nurse qualifications verified by overseas authorities, nursing workforce data, and census data. It found that international movement of nurses was minimal during the 1990s, but from 2001 a sharp jump in the verification of locally registered nurses by overseas authorities coincided with an equivalent increase in international registered nurses added to the local nursing register. This pattern has been sustained to the present. Movement of local registered nurses to Australia is expedited by the Trans-Tasman Agreement, whereas entry of international registered nurses to New Zealand is facilitated by nursing being an identified “priority occupation”. The author concludes that future research needs to consider health system and nurse workforce contexts and take a regional perspective on migration patterns.

Abstract: This paper summarises research which addresses the question What might constitute Maori nursing practice? The research design adopted was influenced by kaupapa Maori methodology and used a semi-structured, qualitative, in-depth interview process. It was found that by understanding the current experiences of Maori registered nurses, their reflections on their preparation for practice, and their current practice, it is possible to identify the present and future training and practice needs of Maori nurses. Maori nursing practice can be characterised as having five features: the promotion of cultural affirmation including cultural awareness and identity; the support of, and access to Maori networks; the adoption of Maori models of health; the enabling of visibility and pro-activity as Maori nurses; and, the validation of Maori nurses as effective health professionals. Three recommendations for promoting Maori nursing practice are made in relation to staff in the workplace and in nurse education programmes: all nursing staff need to be alert to: 1. the impact of western scientific models on Maori healthcare; 2. the (often passive) non-acceptance of Maori within mainstream institutions; and iii) the benefits of valuing indigenous nursing programmes.

Abstract: Performs a retrospective audit of eight Diabetes Nurse-Led Clinics (DNLC) in two regions of DNLC provision in Auckland over a 12-month period from 2016-2017, at which 707 patients were booked for appointments. Undertakes a nested sampling of two randomly-selected DNLCs, in which 71 participants were invited to participate. Explores patients' perspectives of attendance or non-attendance at their booked appointments. Examines whether patients perceive any benefits of attendance at the clinics, and identifies factors that might improve their experiences with DNLCs.

Conducts a qualitative descriptive study in which ten emergency nurses from one ED in New Zealand were interviewed using interactive interview methods, and asked to complete a Likert scale to identify the relevance of internationally- recognised general influences on documentation to their own practices in the context of an ED. Includes recommended routes to development through partnership, participation and process engagement, and strategies including document development, knowledge advancement and support.

Examines the NESP programme in one DHB in which 14 participants who had accepted positions on NESP without specifying the specialty were given semi-structured interviews, as was the NESP coordinator about the employer experience of NESP. Abstract: The purpose of this article is twofold. The first is to clarify some of the challenges experienced while conducting collaborative research and describe the steps taken to ensure consistency between the purpose of the research and the phenomenological research design used to explore the learning that nursing students acquire in their final clinical practicum. Second, it was thought that by illuminating this learning, registered nurses working as preceptors and those supporting new graduates could gain insight into the complexities of learning the skills of safe and competent practice from the student's perspective. This insight is essential in creating a strategy between education and practice to minimise the duplication of learning opportunities and lessen the cost of supporting newly registered nurses, which may be at the expense of investment in the professional development of experienced registered nurses.
