Abstract: This research is a study of the experiences of four cultural safety educators in nursing education in Aotearoa, New Zealand. Action research methods assisted the participants to implement change in their practice and gain positive personal involvement in the study. Reflective diaries provided the major tool in this process as participants were able to achieve at least one action research cycle by identifying issues, planning action, observing the action, and reflecting. The findings of the research revealed that the participants not only coped with everyday stressors of teaching but were also required to formulate knowledge for cultural safety. For the Maori participants, their stress was confounded with recruiting and retaining Maori students and macro issues such as commitment to their iwi (tribe). Lack of support to teach cultural safety was identified to be a key theme for all participants. An analysis of this theme revealed that many issues were organisational in nature and out of their control. Action research provided a change strategy for participants to have a sense of control of issues within their practice. Recommendations include the following: support for cultural safety educators to have a dialogue on a regular basis, the introduction of nurse educator programmes, paid leave provisions for educators to conduct and publish research so that a body of knowledge can be developed, and that Maori cultural safety educators be recognised for their professional and cultural strengths so that they do not fall victim to burnout.

Abstract: Uses a mixed-methods approach to identify the behaviours and cues that nurses recognise as indicators of unsafe practice. Details those factors that influence unsafe practice. Reports the actions and responses taken by nurses who encounter unsafe practice by their peers. Conducts surveys of nurses about their perceptions of unsafe practice and the organisational practices and policies for its prevention.

Abstract: The Well Child/Tamariki Ora Health Book (the Plunket book) is a small booklet given to New Zealand mothers on the birth of a child. Although use of the book has decreased since it?s inception in 1920, it is frequently kept within the family and handed on from mother to child. Utilising an oral history approach, this study has traced the development of the Plunket book over time and explored the experiences of a group of 34 women and one man who have reflected on their ownership of, or involvement with, Plunket books. The study found that the book remains an effective clinical tool for mothers and nurses. Nurses use the book as a tool to help develop a relationship with a mother and her family, and to identify and build on strengths. Mothers have used the book as a tool to link past with present, to maintain kinship ties across generations, to deal with change intergenerationally, and in a manner that contributes to their self-identity as woman and mother. The study recommends that nurses and other health professionals continue to use the Plunket book as a clinical tool mindful of the fact that the book remains in use beyond the health professional?s immediate involvement with the mother and child, playing an important role in the context of the New Zealand family across generations.

Abstract: Investigates the effects of participation in the Intensive Care Unit Randomised Trial Comparing Two Approaches to Oxygen therapy (ICU-ROX) randomised controlled trial, on attitudes and practices in relation to ICU oxygen therapy. Distributes a practitioner attitudes survey to 112 specialist doctors and 153 ICU nurses. Performs both inception and retrospective cohort studies using the Australian and NZ ICU adult patient database before, and post-publication of the ICU-ROX trial results.

Abstract: Explores the perspectives of practice managers on employing nurse practitioners (NP) in general practice. Uses an electronic survey to collect demographic and numerical data, which were analysed descriptively and analytically using SPSS (version 26). Written answers to open-ended questions were analysed qualitatively.

Abstract: Assesses the safety of actively avoiding endotracheal suction in post-operative cardiac surgical patients ventilated for less than 12 hours. Describes local endotracheal suction practice, and elucidates patient experience of the endotracheal tube and endotracheal suction. Conducts an observational audit describing endotracheal sucion practice within the cardiothoracic and vascular intensive care unit in Auckland City Hospital. Undertakes a prospective, non-inferiority, randomised controlled trial investigating the safety of avoiding endotracheal suction.

Abstract: This paper reports the three-stage development of a professional practice audit questionnaire for mental health nursing in Aotearoa/New Zealand. In Study 1, clinical indicator statements (n = 99) generated from focus group data, which were considered to be unobservable in the nursing documentation in consumer case notes, were included in a three-round Delphi process. Consensus of ratings occurred for the mental health nurse and academic participants (n = 7) on 83 clinical indicator statements. In Study 2, the clinical indicator statements (n = 67) that met importance and consensus criteria were incorporated into a questionnaire, which was piloted at a New Zealand mental health service. The questionnaire was then modified for use in a national field study. In Study 3, the national field study, registered mental health nurses (n = 422) from 11 New Zealand district health board mental health services completed the questionnaire. Five categories of nursing practice were identified: professional and evidence-based practice; consumer focus and reflective practice; professional development and integration; ethically and legally safe practice; and culturally safe practice. Analyses revealed little difference in the perceptions of nurses from different backgrounds regarding the regularity of the nursing practices. Further research is needed to calibrate the scores on each clinical indicator statement with behaviour in clinical practice.
