Abstract |
A new approach to public health nursing in the Otago region is described, which comprises of 3 distinct groups of nurses working in early childhood centres, primary schools and high schools. A family nursing assessment approach is used. The philosophical underpinnings of this approach are examined, which seeks to empower patients and engage them in their health care. Two public health nurses are interviewed about the new partnership model of nursing. |

Abstract |
The study was undertaken as a project for the International Year of the Child. There was a need for information to identify what health care in needed in schools and to contribute to a review of the role of the nurses. Teachers and principals of all primary schools of the Wellington area were surveyed to describe the health care being provided and needed. Recommendations were made for school nurses who would support the health-related teaching by teachers, provide first aid and advice, and take an extended role for family health operating from a clinic in the school. |

Abstract |
In New Zealand, there is a festering debate over a theory-practice gap in nursing. Joint appointments present as a potential solution to this issue. Joint appointments refer to a variety of arrangements whereby concurrent employment occurs within an educational institution and a clinical setting.Advantages for the appointees include job satisfaction, and professional growth. Clinical credibility for nurse educators enables improved facilitation of student learning. In clinical areas, benefits in patient care are associated with the marrying of academic rigor with clinical practice. Some appointees input into staff development, act as consultants on nursing issues and undertake research. Disadvantages in the concept focus on role conflict (incongruity between the roles) and role ambiguity (lack of clarity concerning expectations). Success of the ventures depends upon the personal attributes of appointees; realistic expectations; flexibility to allow the concept to evolve; and support from colleagues and management.This research describes a case study of a joint appointment between a nurse lecturer and a senior staff nurse in an acute forensic psychiatry unit. Advantages, disadvantages and reasons for success are discussed in relation to the literature findings. The discussion focuses on the need to develop research methodology to further clarify potential benefits and advantages |

Abstract |
This article overviews the use of hyperbaric oxygen treatment in New Zealand primarily for chronic wounds, those who have had radiation therapy and those who are having or who have had head and neck surgery. In New Zealand there are just three hyperbaric oxygen treatment units: The Devonport Naval Base and The Oxygen Therapy Clinic, both in Auckland; and the Hyperbaric Medicine Unit in Christchurch; thus access to this treatment is limited. |

Abstract |
The author presents a case study of a joint appointment between a nurse lecturer and a staff nurse in an acute forensic psychiatry unit. He explores the advantages, disadvantages and reasons for success in relation to the findings of a survey of the literature on joint appointments. This technique is seen as a means of narrowing the gap between theory and practice which resulted when nurse training was transferred from hospitals to polytechnics. He highlights the need to develop research methodology to clarify potential benefits of this approach. |

Abstract |
The author describes his experience of five years as a nurse practitioner in mental health at Waikato District Health Board. A recent review of the role gave him the opportunity to reflect on the learning associated with assuming the nurse practitioner role. A key area of learning has been in negotiating the shifting responsibilities and changing relationships associated with his role as an nurse practitioner and also as a Responsible Clinician, a role traditionally held by psychiatrists. The Responsible Clinician role is a statutory one under the Mental Health Act (1992), generally performed by psychiatrists but open to other suitably qualified professionals. He reports the results of a review based on feedback from fellow professionals, clients and their families, along with quantitative data from basic statistics connected to the role, such as a time and motion study. The review asked fellow professionals to rate the performance of the nurse practitioner against the Nursing Council competencies. These results indicate the nurse practitioner role is of some value and that other professionals and clients seem satisfied with the role. There is some evidence it is delivering outcomes acceptable to clients and other professionals. The study has many limitations which are discussed, such as a poor response rate and short time frame. Further research is planned to evaluate this role. |

Abstract |
The author reviews the national and international literature on medical errors and adverse events. Contributing factors are identified, such as organisational culture, the myth of infallibility, and a one size fits all approach to health care. Conflict and communication difficulties between different health professionals is discussed in detail, as is the issue of disruptive behaviour, which includes intimidation, humiliation, undermining, domination and bullying. Some strategies for addressing these issues are proposed, such as promoting a no-blame culture, and addressing conflict between health professionals. |

Abstract |
The authors review the contemporary notion of obesity and suggest that the nursing approach, with an emphasis on treatment, are shaped by a culture located within “western” views of ideal body shape. The biomedical framework regards obesity as disease and obese people as the cause of their own health problems. The authors note varying cultural interpretations of obesity, and suggest that by viewing obesity as a disease, the cultural, social or economic determinants of obesity are not acknowledged. Nursing needs to broaden the concept of the categories of difference to respond in a culturally safe way to obesity. Cultural safety asks that nurses care for people “regardful” of difference. This means nurses must reflect on the care given, so that the biomedical model is not just replicated. Nurse-led clinics offer an opportunity for practices based on nursing values of care and cultural safety. Such clinics are based on nursing's social model of health, rather than a biomedical, disease-focused model. |

Abstract |
The author considers the issue of mixed-sex rooming (MSR) in New Zealand hospitals. A review of the literature is presented, with a focus on the attitudes and experiences of patients in the UK, where the issue has been most practised and studied. Findings of a survey of a group of New Zealand female patients are presented. The patients feelings of embarrassment and loss of dignity and privacy are discussed. The legal issues are explored, with the practice evaluated against the patient's rights detailed in the Code of Health and Disability Services and the Privacy Act 1993. |
