The discussion will focus on the patient's healthcare experience and the nursing strategies undertaken to help maintain her optimum health. The personal information used in this article was gathered from an interview with the patient during a second-year undergraduate nursing student clinical learning experience. |

Abstract |
The purpose of this study was to explore how young people make career choices and why young people choose or reject nursing as a career choice. This study has highlighted the complexity of this decision-making process, and the importance of making positive connections and offering appropriate support during this process. It seems that many young people are well equipped to make career decisions when given support.
The need to recruit people from minority cultures into nursing is a global issue. This study also highlights the need for an inter-sectoral approach to raise the profile of nursing and make a career that is attractive to young people. |

Abstract |
This paper will focus on nursing leadership, in particular the place of whanau ora in nursing practice. It explores one Maori and one tauiwi leadership style in relation to nursing practice in a whanau ora context. A critical appraisal of the Maori leadership style is given alongside discussion of how it promotes positive shifts in the health status of Maori communities. Finally, the paper discusses how this Maori leadership style supports the learning and development of Maori student nurses preparing for registered practice. |

Abstract |
The author, an occupational health nurse, examines rationale for and effectiveness of the pre-employment assessment, which has become an accepted practice. Reasons for doing assessments include the reduction of risk to the employer from lower accident rates and absenteeism, compliance with legislative requirements and the provision of baseline health measures for general health surveillance. The costs of the screening process, along with the benefits are weighed up, in conjunction with international research in the area. The author found little research on the process in New Zealand. The opportunity for primary health care and health promotion practice as an aspect of this screening is highlighted as an important, though underestimated, benefit. Regular auditing is recommended to ensure that the outcomes of the process meet the criteria required. |

This article is presented in two parts. In the first, an outline of Heidegger's approach to phenomenology is offered. A basic premise of hermeneutic phenomenology is that people make sense of the world through the narratives they tell to themselves and to others. When the researcher uses this philosophical approach, persons communicate their experiences; the researcher interprets the experience and communicates that understanding in writing. In the second part of the paper, the experiences of four people whose partners were hospitalised out of town is described. |

Abstract |
Drawing on data from a large convenience sample of caregivers in New Zealand, this article argues for a reappraisal of the way in which care homes view death and dying and advocates the more widespread adoption of a palliative care philosophy. Increasing numbers of people are dying in care homes yet little is known about the nature and quality of their deaths. The limited research available suggests that there is a need to promote a philosophy of palliative care that is not confined to the terminal phase of life. However, adopting such an approach appears to be inhibited by a lack of understanding, education and training, as well as continuing reluctance to discuss issues of death and dying in an open and honest way. |

This case study outlines the care of Mr. M, a sixty-six year old ventilated patient admitted to an Intensive Care Unit for management following coronary artery grafts. Mr. M's health history and risk factors are explored, in particular how they contributed to his presentation. Outlines findings from a longitudinal study of the reporting of violence and aggression (V&A) within Christchurch Hospital Emergency Department (ED). Continues a prospective, longitudinal cohort study involving repeated yearly audits of ED staff reporting V&A during the same month each year. Employs an audit approach, focussing on the accuracy of routine reporting. Captures data from 2014-2020,including staff members' professional group, gender, category of V&A (e.g. verbal or physical abuse or threat, and physical or sexual assault), date and location of incident, and the individual who committed the violence. |

Examines levels of reported violence and aggression within a tertiary-level emergency department (ED) in NZ. Explores staff attitudes to violence and the reporting of it. Conducts a one-month intensive prospective audit of the reporting of violence and aggression within the ED. Compares results with previously-reported data, and finds that failure to report acts of violence is common. Highlights that emergency nurses are the primary targets of abuse and confirms the effect it has on retention. |

The objective of this project was to ascertain registered nurses' use of selected physical assessment skills before and after participation in a health assessment course. A pre- (also referred to as part I) and post- (part II) test design was used to investigate the research aim. Participants were obtained via a convenience sample. A questionnaire was completed at the beginning of the educational programme and then four to six weeks after completion of the assessment course. A two tailed t-test was used to identify any significant differences in the characteristics of participants from part I (N = 206) to part II (N = 145), with no differences identified. However, there was an overall mean percentage difference of 17.1% in the use of physical assessment skills after having completed the educational programme. In conclusion, the researchers found that four to six weeks after completion of a health assessment course, nurses were using the skills learned to improve their nursing practice more frequently than before the programme. |
