Abstract |
In this paper the authors draw attention to the value and understandings of nurse dignity in the work-life of nurses. A review of nursing literature and a theoretical lens on worker dignity derived from recent work by Hodson (2001) was used to explore these questions. In the context of current and international workforce issues associated with recruitment and retention, analysis of the construct of worker dignity within the profession takes on a strong imperative. Findings of this inquiry reveal that while there is a degree of coherence between the nursing research and elements of Hodson's (2001) research on worker dignity, the dignity of nurses, as a specific construct and as an intrinsic human and worker right has received little explicit attention. Reasons for this may lie partly in approaches that privilege patient dignity over nurse dignity and which rely on the altruism and self-sacrifice of nurses to sustain patient care in environments dominated by cost-control agendas. The value of dignity in the work-life of nurses has been under-explored and there is a critical need for further theoretical work and research. This agenda goes beyond acceptance of dignity in the workplace as a human right towards the recognition that worker dignity may be a critical factor in sustaining development of healthy workplaces and healthy workforces. Directing explicit attention to nurse dignity may benefit the attainment of both nurse and organisational goals. Hodson's (2001) framework offers a new perspective on dignity in the workplace. |

Abstract |
This article examines the concept of clinical supervision as “professional supervision”. Professional supervision contains many elements, is structured and not without effort. Fundamentally it is about being safe and professional. 'Reflective learning' and 'Live/tutorial' models are reviewed in different contexts for assisting nurses work through everyday issues, conflicts and problems of their role. The author concludes that regardless of which model is used there are benefits for safety and professionalism. |

Abstract |
This paper reports an initiative which is an example of partnership between education and health organisations resulting in the implementation of a jointly funded advanced nursing practice role. The model is for community based Nurse Practitioner-managed health care for primary health and disease management. The key partners in this project are the Eastern Institute of Technology, Hawke's Bay District Health Board, and a Primary Health Organisation (Tu Meke – First Choice). This article summarises the objectives, implementation, evaluation and benefits of the programme. |

Abstract |
Through improved technology and treatment and ongoing de-institutionalisation, nurses will encounter growing numbers of people with disabilities in the New Zealand community and hospitals. Quality of nursing care is influenced by attitude and this study was to evaluate the effect of a curriculum change on the attitudes of two different streams of student nurses towards people with disabilities. During the year 2002 a focused disability unit was introduced to the revised undergraduate nursing curriculum of a major educational institution in New Zealand. The opportunity arose to consider student nurses' attitudes toward disabled people, comparing two streams of students undertaking two different curricula. A convenience sample of students completed Yuker, Block and Younng's (1970) Attitudes Toward Disabled Persons scale (ATDP) form B prior to and on completion of their relevant disability unit. No statistically significant difference in scores was demonstrated. A number of possible reasons for this are suggested. |

Abstract |
In the process of introducing a new disability unit into an undergraduate nursing curriculum in a New Zealand educational setting, the opportunity arose to conduct a small study comparing the attitudes of students nurses to people with disabilities. This paper discusses the literature review, which formed the basis for the study. A range of perspectives and research was identified that explored societal and nurses' attitudes, disability studies in undergraduate nursing curricula, the impact of nurses' attitudes on patient care, and interventions for changing those attitudes. Effective nursing care can be severely compromised through negative attitudes, and concerns are expressed at the lack of attention given to this issue in nursing curricula generally. The literature showed that combining educational approaches with opportunities for student nurses to interact with disabled people provides the most effective means for student nurses to develop positive attitudes towards disabled people. The goal for nurse educators is to ensure the inclusion of disability studies as a core component in undergraduate nursing education. |

Abstract |
In 1984 Mason Durie documented a framework for understanding Maori health, Te Whare Tapa Wha, which has subsequently become embedded in Maori health policy. This article presents a specific assessment framework, the Meihana Model, which encompasses the four original cornerstones of Te Whare Tapa Wha, and inserts two additional elements. These form a practice model (alongside Maori beliefs, values and experiences) to guide clinical assessment and intervention with Maori clients and whanau accessing mental health services. This paper outlines the rationale for and background of the Meihana Model and then describes each dimension: whanau, wairua, tinana, hinengaro, taiao and iwi katoa. The model provides a basis for a more comprehensive assessment of clients/whanau to underpin appropriate treatment decisions. |

Abstract |
This paper details the workforce capacity of youth health nursing and medical staffing required for community-based and school-based youth health services. The author shows how youth health services seek to complement the care delivered by Primary Health Organisations (PHOs) and other allied health care services in the community. She outlines the development and operation at VIBE, a community-based youth health service in the Hutt Valley with school-based youth health services delivered at four low deciles secondary schools. She explains that developing workforce capacity for youth health services is a primary health care priority and an important means to address inequalities and to improve the health services of young people. |

Abstract |
Nurse migration flows in and out of New Zealand are examined to determine impacts and regional contexts. A descriptive statistics method was used to analyse secondary data on nurses added to the register, New Zealand nurse qualifications verified by overseas authorities, nursing workforce data, and census data. It found that international movement of nurses was minimal during the 1990s, but from 2001 a sharp jump in the verification of locally registered nurses by overseas authorities coincided with an equivalent increase in international registered nurses added to the local nursing register. This pattern has been sustained to the present. Movement of local registered nurses to Australia is expedited by the Trans-Tasman Agreement, whereas entry of international registered nurses to New Zealand is facilitated by nursing being an identified “priority occupation”. The author concludes that future research needs to consider health system and nurse workforce contexts and take a regional perspective on migration patterns. |

Abstract |
The objective of this paper is to outline a study firstly, assessing ICU nurses' ability in articulating respiratory physiology to provide rationale for their clinical decision-making and secondly, the barriers that limit the articulation of this knowledge. Using an evaluation methodology, multiple methods were employed to collect data from 27 ICU nurses who had completed an ICU education programme and were working in one of two tertiary ICUs in New Zealand. Quantitative analysis showed that nurses articulated a low to medium level of knowledge of respiratory physiology. Thematic analysis identified the barriers limiting this use of respiratory physiology as being inadequate coverage of concepts in some ICU programmes; limited discussion of concepts in clinical practice; lack of clinical support; lack of individual professional responsibility; nurses' high reliance on intuitive knowledge; lack of collaborative practice; availability of medical expertise; and the limitations of clinical guidelines and protocols. These issues need to be addressed if nurses' articulation of respiratory physiology to provide rationale for their clinical decision-making is to be improved. |

Abstract |
The author reviews the national and international literature on medical errors and adverse events. Contributing factors are identified, such as organisational culture, the myth of infallibility, and a one size fits all approach to health care. Conflict and communication difficulties between different health professionals is discussed in detail, as is the issue of disruptive behaviour, which includes intimidation, humiliation, undermining, domination and bullying. Some strategies for addressing these issues are proposed, such as promoting a no-blame culture, and addressing conflict between health professionals. |

Abstract |
This article reviews the development of the New Zealand nursing workforce, which has been shaped by social, political, scientific and interprofessional forces. The unregulated, independent and often untrained nurses of the early colonial period were succeeded in the early 1900s by registered nurses, with hospital-based training, working in a subordinate role to medical practitioners. In the mid/late 1900s, greater specialisation within an expanding workforce, restructuring of nursing education, health sector reform, and changing social and political expectations again reshaped nursing practice. Nursing now has areas of increasing autonomy, expanding opportunities for postgraduate education and leadership roles, and a relationship with medicine, which is more collaborative than in the past. Three current challenges are identified for nursing in New Zealand's rapidly evolving health sector; development of a nursing-focused knowledge culture, strengthening of research capacity, and dissemination of new nursing knowledge. |

Abstract |
The aim of this paper is to compare the Emergency Nurse Practitioner role in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. Whilst geographically distant, the role of the Emergency Nurse Practitioner within these three countries shares fundamental similarities, causing the researchers to question, is this a time to implement international standards for the role? The Emergency Nurse Practitioner role in all three countries is gradually establishing itself, yet there are shared concerns over how the role is regulated and deficits in standardisation of scope of practice and educational level. Together these issues generate confusion over what the role embodies. The authors suggest that one method of demystifying the Emergency Nurse Practitioner role would be to progress towards international standards for regulation, education and core components of practice. |

Abstract |
The authors review the contemporary notion of obesity and suggest that the nursing approach, with an emphasis on treatment, are shaped by a culture located within “western” views of ideal body shape. The biomedical framework regards obesity as disease and obese people as the cause of their own health problems. The authors note varying cultural interpretations of obesity, and suggest that by viewing obesity as a disease, the cultural, social or economic determinants of obesity are not acknowledged. Nursing needs to broaden the concept of the categories of difference to respond in a culturally safe way to obesity. Cultural safety asks that nurses care for people “regardful” of difference. This means nurses must reflect on the care given, so that the biomedical model is not just replicated. Nurse-led clinics offer an opportunity for practices based on nursing values of care and cultural safety. Such clinics are based on nursing's social model of health, rather than a biomedical, disease-focused model. |

The author examines the current practices around the surgical counts of sponges, sharps and instruments, which is an integral component of safe perioperative nursing practice. Current practice, legislative requirements are reviewed, and the guidelines from the Perioperative Nurses College of New Zealand are reproduced. Case studies of errors in counts are used to illustrate the legal standards of practice. |
