Abstract |
This study has sought to quantify the attitudes of first-year medical, nursing and pharmacy students' towards interprofessional learning, at course commencement. The Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) (University of Liverpool, Department of Health Care Education), was administered to first-year medical, nursing and pharmacy students at the University of Auckland. Differences between the three groups were analysed. The majority of students reported positive attitudes towards shared learning. The benefits of shared learning, including the acquisition of teamworking skills, were seen to be beneficial to patient care and likely to enhance professional working relationships. However professional groups differed: nursing and pharmacy students indicated more strongly that an outcome of learning together would be more effective teamworking. Medical students were the least sure of their professional role, and considered that they required the acquisition of more knowledge and skills than nursing or pharmacy students. |

Abstract |
Accurate nursing assessment is a critical element in the identification of health problems and treatment strategies for older adults who have delirium and/or dementia. This practice update provides information on the differentiation between these two debilitating and adverse health events, along with some useful assessment frameworks and other resources. Comments from people with delirium and dementia are interspersed throughout the article to draw attention to the impact of these conditions on people's lives and well-being. The article includes the 'A presenting concern framework', useful mnemonic devices to help nurses assess an older person who may have delirium or dementia, and a list of online resources. |

Abstract |
This article examines the role of nurses working in intensive care units who may need to work with families as they face the death of a loved one. How the nurse communicates with relatives during these crucial hours prior to the death can have profound implications on their grief recovery. Universal needs for families in this situation have been identified in the literature, and include: hope; knowing that staff care about their loved one; and having honest information about their loved one's condition. A case study is used to illustrate key skills and techniques nurses can employ to help meet these universal needs. In the first stage of grief the bereaved is in shock and may feel a sense of numbness and denial. The bereaved may feel confused and will have difficulty concentrating and remembering instructions, and they may express strong emotions. Studies on families' needs show that honest answers to questions and information about their loved one are extremely important. It is often very difficult for the nurse to give honest information when the prognosis is poor. Good communication skills and techniques are discussed, in which hope is not offered at the expense of truthfulness, and the nurse facilitates the process of saying goodbye and expressing emotions. Practical techniques, such as including the family in basic care such as foot massaging and simple hygiene routines, may also be used to move the family from being bystanders to the impending death, to comforters. |

The author reviews the controversial treatment of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) which has re-emerged as a safe and effective treatment for major depressive disorders. She first addresses the popular conceptions of ECT, which are based on early misuse of the treatment when it was delivered unmodified, or forcefully and without anaesthetic. She then uses a case study to illustrate the benefits of ECT for catatonia and catatonic states. Diagnostic criteria for catatonia include motoric immobility, excessive motor activity, extreme negativism or mutism, peculiarities of voluntary movement, and echolalia or echopraxia. The treatment of a patient is detailed, and the role of the ECT nurse is outlined. The ECT nurse is a co-ordinator, an educator, liaises with other services and families, and is a point of contact about ECT within the mental health service generally and in the ECT unit in particular. The case study showed successful use of ECT. A series of eight ECT treatments were administered to the catatonic patient, after which he was discharged home with minor depression and showing signs of enjoying life once again. |

Abstract |
The author investigates the premises that form the basis of nursing practice in acute care. Assumptions about patients and caregiving are often at odds with each other. The origins of these tenets are mapped from Florence Nightingale through to present nursing theorists. Overlapping areas of nursing and medical care in the acute care setting are examined, and the conflict that can arise between traditional nursing care and the expected medical nursing role is examined. He argues that the challenge for acute care nurses is to find a balance between normative nursing and the medical model. |

Abstract |
This study investigated nurse educators' conceptions of critical thinking used in making judgment related to nursing. Twelve nurse educators from a large nursing school in an urban environment in New Zealand participated in this qualitative study. A semistructured questionnaire was used to explore the nurse educators' conceptions of critical thinking. The study found that the participants viewed rational, logical thinking as a central focus of critical thinking. However, in addition to these traditional perspectives, the nurse educators also included in their conceptions views more commonly held by feminist writers. These aspects focused on attention to intuition, subjective knowing, attention to context, emotions, and caring. |

Abstract |
This article explores the application of professional practice models in nursing. Particular reference is made to the magnet hospital model and the concept of shared governance. Key principles from these models are explored in relation to the implementation of a professional practice model in an intensive care environment. Historical, cultural and professional factors that may be seen as barriers to the implementation of this professional practice model are also explored. In conclusion, the article identifies recommendations that may contribute to a successful implementation and duration of a model in practice. |

The purpose of this paper is to shed some light on the concept of clinical supervision specifically in relation to mental health nursing. The author talks briefly about the naming and history of clinical supervision and aims to provide some clarity around defining the concept. There is discussion around the role, value and objectives of clinical supervision before critical examination of two models of clinical supervision within two different contexts.
