Abstract: Measures the extent to which health-care students began their training with compassionate attributes. Defines compassion as an awareness of others and a desire to help, using a non-judgmental approach. Highlights the significance of compassion in health care. Provides a self-administered 'compassion to others' psychometric scale to measure compassionate attributes to 146 students enrolled in the first semester of nursing, midwifery and social work at the Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec). Analyses data using the SPSS and ANOVA for descriptive statistics and predictive information.

Abstract: The Primary Health Care Strategy (PHCS) has a stated commitment to defined populations who suffer disproportionately from ill health. This thesis examines whether some prevailing discourses actually decrease the focus on health inequalities. A study of the nursing and medical media found that it focused predominantly on professional and industrial issues, leaving health workers focused mainly on their own professional interests, rather than considering the effects on health inequalities. She goes on to suggest that current Ministry of Health discourse values decentralised community health decision making. This may gloss over factors in community health which are affected by Government policy such as employment policy, and thus should be dealt with centrally by legislation. These factors have been found to be the most pertinent in health inequalities. So while models of community partnerships may seem to place communities as agents in their own health, this downplays the determinants of health which are beyond their control. Having shown that discourse can decrease the focus on health inequalities due to other professional and political drivers, the author then looked at health initiative concepts which are effective, efficient and equitable given the current set up of PHOs and nursing innovations.

Abstract: This article describes the implementation of a nurse-led, dedicated support network and service for children with a diagnosis of retinoblastoma and their families. Nurses with an interest in retinoblastoma at an Auckland Ophthalmology Department realised that the service provided was not meeting the needs of patients and families, particularly since the numbers had increased over the past two years. This article outlines the development of a cost-effective approach that improved the service.

Abstract: Examines designated registered nurse (RN) prescribing among community health nurses. Aims to understand how RN prescribers interact with other members of the health care team and to identify the social processes at play. Employs Bourdieu's 'Theory of Practice' to explore health care teams as competitive social spaces where health professionals vie to establish social position and authority. Recruits three health care teams representing primary health and specialty practice for interviews and observation. Highlights three themes from the data: social topography, working with an RN prescriber; and patterns of communication.

Abstract: This paper reports an initiative which is an example of partnership between education and health organisations resulting in the implementation of a jointly funded advanced nursing practice role. The model is for community based Nurse Practitioner-managed health care for primary health and disease management. The key partners in this project are the Eastern Institute of Technology, Hawke's Bay District Health Board, and a Primary Health Organisation (Tu Meke – First Choice). This article summarises the objectives, implementation, evaluation and benefits of the programme.

Abstract: This paper details the workforce capacity of youth health nursing and medical staffing required for community-based and school-based youth health services. The author shows how youth health services seek to complement the care delivered by Primary Health Organisations (PHOs) and other allied health care services in the community. She outlines the development and operation at VIBE, a community-based youth health service in the Hutt Valley with school-based youth health services delivered at four low deciles secondary schools. She explains that developing workforce capacity for youth health services is a primary health care priority and an important means to address inequalities and to improve the health services of young people.
