Abstract: This research study examined the role of the public health nurse. Utilising community needs analysis method, 17 key informants and two focus groups were asked questions to determine perceptions of the public health nurse. Findings indicated that participants lacked knowledge regarding the role. Additional findings intimated that participants had difficulty in accessing public health nurse services and that 'knowing the system' was beneficial to receiving needed care. One of the major conclusions of this study was that many facets of care managed by public health nurses were invisible to the communities in which they work. Conclusions suggest that public health nurses need to enhance their service by improving accessibility to services and promoting their service in a more visible manner.

A sample of five volunteer nursing lecturers had their interactions with undergraduate students recorded. The data is analysed using two auditing approaches and qualitative content analysis.

Abstract: Recent Nursing Council of New Zealand guidelines for competence-based practising certificates and the fact that all nurse educators must have a current practising certificate prompted the Nursing Schools within the Tertiary Accord of New Zealand (TANZ) to explore issues surrounding current competency in practice and how this can be maintained by nurse educators. The authors note that discussions related to competence-based practising certificates generally refer to competence only in terms of direct patient care. They set out to clarify the issue with specific reference to nurse educators who, by the nature of their scope of practice, often do not carry a patient caseload. They review the literature relating to currency of practice and draw on the findings of a survey of TANZ Nursing Schools and provide a position on how currency of practice applies to nurses working in an educational setting. They present strategies to maintain clinical, teaching and scholarly currency and make some suggestions for providing evidence that currency of practice is maintained.

Abstract: The authors report a survey of all nurses working in hospitals included in the International Hospital Outcomes Study of staffing and patient outcomes in New Zealand's secondary and tertiary hospitals from 1988-2001. The survey examines the way in which the hospitals have been restructured and analyses patient outcomes. Research has identified links between how nursing is organised in a hospital and that hospital's patient outcomes.

Abstract: The authors examine gender based disparities for academics with respect to remuneration, academic grading and Perfomance Based Research Fund (PBRF) scores, whereby women do less well than men in each of these areas. In this article individualised explanations for the failure of women to progress are set in the context of a critical exploration of the PBRF evaluation methodology. It is argued that both academia and the PBRF research assessment exercise embody a form of academic masculinity that systematically disadvantages women in general and nursing in particular.

Asks residents to complete a survey of quality-of-life and overall satisfaction measures, and asks 31 of their family members to complete a survey on care satisfaction provided by the facilities. Presents a number of practical considerations for nursing care staff to improve residents' quality of life and staff-family relationships.

Abstract: In this research report, a resident reveals the challenges associated with firstly becoming a nursing home resident, and then trying to establish a new sense of 'home'. The story supports a conclusion that nurses' knowledge of the unique 'admission story' of each resident, and their individual understandings of home, is essential in promoting their ongoing comfort. Although approximately 30,000 older adults live in residential aged care, little research has been done on their experience.

Abstract: This article reports data from 15 schools of nursing, surveyed to identify difficulties experienced by nurse educators with respect to entry, progression and programme completion of undergraduate nursing students. Risk assessment, along with a lack of clear policy and procedures were found to be the main problem areas. Difficulties were exacerbated for educators when there were challenges to their professional judgement, either from the Nursing Council of New Zealand or from within their own institution. The authors argue for more recognition of the dual role of nurse educators, and greater clarification of the Nursing Council of New Zealand role in regulating the student's programme entry and progression, and ultimate admission to the Register. It is suggested that the recently passed Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act (2003) provides nursing with an opportunity to address some of these issues.

Smillie, A. (2006). Historical investigations: Risk management in a New Zealand hospital, 1888-1904. Nursing Praxis in New Zealand, 22(2), 33–38.
Abstract: This article examines historical events within one hospital and compares them with contemporary risk management practices. The examples involve a nurse sustaining injury in the course of her work, a fire in the hospital and two instances of patient complaints – one concerning nursing care and the other relating to a time lag between admission to hospital and receiving medical attention. Analysis of the processes followed in investigating these occurrences reveals that these historic investigations were small in scale and less bureaucratic than contemporary practice, and were based on a culture of blame. This is contrasted with modern risk management practices which are more focused on understanding what can be learned from the incident with respect to preventing recurrence.
