Abstract: The purpose of this qualitative study was to analyse the learning experiences of nine nursing students on clinical placement in New Zealand. The students were in their third and final year of their baccalaureate nursing degree. The study specifically examined what impinged upon their learning experience in the clinical venue. Data was obtained from interviewing the students, initially individually and finally in a focus group. Themes emerged through words and concepts as the data was analysed. The themes included powerlessness; marginalisation; the move from a holistic to a reductionist approach in care; the exploitation of minority students and the myth of praxis. Clinical practice was a time for nursing students to apply their knowledge to their practice, and to gain experience and confidence. Their clinical practice was normally a positive experience, but, each student spoke of the occasional negative episode. These left them with feelings of powerlessness and marginalisation. The Maori students felt exploited. The students were concerned about the lack of time to debrief at the end of the day, and to share their experiences with their educator and colleagues. The students' negative experiences were often the result of a clinical practitioner's high workload, under resourcing and the nurse educator's unavailability.

Abstract: This paper discusses the complexity of family violence for nurses negotiating the 'tight rope' between the prime concern for the safety of children and further contributing to maternal alienation, within a New Zealand context. The premise that restoration of the mother-child relationship is paramount for the long-term wellbeing of both the children and the mother provides the basis for discussing implications for nursing practice. Evidence shows that when mothers are supported and have the necessary resources there is a reduction in the violence and abuse she and her children experience; this occurs even in situations where the mother is the primary abuser of her children. The family-centred care philosophy, which is widely accepted as the best approach to nursing care for children and their families, creates tension for nurses caring for children who are the victims of abuse as this care generally occurs away from the context of the family.

Abstract: This paper reports a study to investigate the roles and experiences of nurses caring for clients undergoing assisted reproductive technologies (ART). Nurses are in a potentially unique position in the assisted reproductive technology environment as they maintain a more constant contact with the client. A qualitative approach was taken and a convenience sample of 15 nurses from New Zealand was interviewed in 2005. Data were analysed using interpretive description. The overarching theme identified was that of the potential role of the nurse to 'hold together' multiple components of the assisted reproductive technology process: holding together clients' emotional and physical experiences of assisted reproductive technologies; holding together the roles of different specialist team members; and holding together personal own emotions. It encompasses practices such as information-giving, interpreting, supporting and advocating. The researchers note that recognition of and support for the complexity of the role of ART nurses may positively contribute to clients' experiences.

Abstract: This paper explores the relationships within teaching, learning and practice development in critical care nursing and questions the popular assumption that 'post graduate (Master's level) education fits all'. The need for critical care nurses to apply advanced knowledge and technical skills to complex and dynamic practice situations necessitates the development of critical thinking and a problem-solving approach to clinical practice that can be fostered through education and experience. Discussion focuses on the successful development and implementation of graduate level education for critical care nurses in the South Island of New Zealand and how this development is challenging existing approaches to the provision and evaluation of formal critical care education in New Zealand.

Abstract: An overview of the model of nursing practice and nurse roles derived through a programme of nursing research in the context of the changing New Zealand health system. The emphasis is on the complementary nature of the practice of family nurses taking a generic integrative service delivery hub role and the practice of other nurses advancing in specialist roles. Nursing care is presented as a professional, collective practice of registered nurses spread across all health service sectors and employment settings. Nurse roles are differentiated according to the interplay of two factors influencing the extent of practice autonomy the nurses assume (educationally supported) in responding to health need. A diagram depicts the interrelationship of competency and scope for the inclusive three different career trajectories of nurses advancing in practice. NOTE: This paper was published with an error in the title of the article (stated correctly on the journal contents page). Abstract: Analysis of the research literature on prison nursing revealed a paucity of research, both in New Zealand and internationally. The aim of this research was to describe the working life of the nurse in a New Zealand prison and provide an understanding of and documentation on prison nursing in New Zealand. A qualitative descriptive study was undertaken to determine what it is like to nurse in a New Zealand prison. Ten nurses working at two public prisons and one private prison took part in the study. Data was collected by the use of semi-structured interviews and analysed thematically into four main themes. The participants' descriptions of their working lives as prison nurses expose the multifaceted nature of this work and the inherent relational dynamics. These dynamics determine the nurse's ability to practise effectively in the prison setting. Findings highlighted many paradoxical situations for nurses when working in this environment. The very aspects of the work that participants described as negative were also identified, in some instances, as challenging and satisfying.
