Abstract |
Comprises three essays on the economics of health-care delivery in hospitals: considers the relationship between gender and/or ethnic concordance between a doctor and patient, and the number of diagnostic tests ordered during a hospital stay; estimates the impact of doctor-patient demographic concordance (where doctor and patient share the same ethnic group and/or gender) on a doctor's decision-making for diagnostic resources and medical treatments; calculates the relationship between ward-level nursing hours and a patient's health outcome, e.g. mortality and length of ward stay. Uses a detailed nursing-staff dataset, a novel instrumental variable for nursing hours (the amount of sick and bereavement leave taken by nurses on a ward) and the separate effect of nursing and patient hours in a ward, on a patient's health outcome. |

Abstract |
Focuses on two broad themes: perceptions and attitudes of general nurses in in-patient hospital settings towards clinical supervision and how they have found such support to be of benefit to themselves or their practice; organisational documentation policies and procedures available to nurses in order to understand their contribution to, and valuing of, clinical supervision. Seeks to discover whether there is evidence of other factors influencing the provision of, or access to, clinical supervision by general nurses, which influences attitudes and perceptions. |

Abstract |
Undertakes a qualitative, phenomenological study to explore the experiences of practitioners delivering asthma services to tamariki Maori and their whanau in primary healthcare. Employs a kaupapa Maori methodology in order to provide a Maori perspective to the research. Uses an equity framework in the analysis and interpretation of the results, to ensure alignment with Maori values and aspirations. Interviews 15 doctors and nurses from Maori, mainstream and Very-Low-Cost-Access providers of asthma services. Presents the results using the Pou Ora framework with four main themes: Hauora, Toi Ora, Whanau Ora, and Mauri Ora. |

Abstract |
Explores the current climate of infection prevention control (IPC) clinical governance in NZ. Audits IPC management plans in NZ District Health Boards (DHB) to evaluate which clinical governance factors facilitate or hinder IPC best practice. Employs a mixed-method, exploratory, qualitative study design to conduct semi-structured interviews with ten IPC nurses across NZ. Seeks to understand their perceptions of the IPC Standard, how it is implemented in their DHB, how the IPC risks are managed, and which barriers hinder IPC engagement. Analyses IPC documentation from all 20 DHBs to examine IPC clinical governance in each DHB. |

Abstract |
Traces the development of the nurse practitioner role in NZ since its establishment in 2001, using a discourse analytical approach to examine those discourses that have defined the role. Employs both textual and discursive analysis of texts from published literature and from nine interviews with individuals influential in the evolution of the role. Examines political perspectives and disciplinary practices dating back to the Nurses Registration Act of 1901. Considers the implications of an autonomous nursing profession in both practice and regulation. |

Emphasises the existential impacts arising from disruption to the embodied self as experienced by the study participants. Discusses problems with biomedical research on pelvic surgical mesh, highlighting two key clinical studies, and a NZ study. Employs hermeneutic phenomenology and a questionnaire to survey the participants. |

Abstract |
Uncovers the significance for nurses who were trained within the 1970s apprenticeship model in NZ hospitals, in their present understanding of themselves as nurses. Confirms that the 1970s heralded the beginning of the end of the apprenticeship system of nurse training, and that literature related to this era of general student nurse training is limited. Uses philosophical hermeneutics to guide interviews with 15 former student nurses who trained within the Auckland Hospital Board School of Nursing, and who reflect 40 years afterward, on how their apprenticeship training influenced the type of nurses they became. |
