| Abstract |
Sexual health clinics and the people who visit them commonly face stigma. Sexually transmitted infections have historically been used to divide people into “clean” and “dirty”. A grounded theory study of the work of sixteen nurses in six sexual health services in New Zealand was undertaken to explore the management of sexual health care. The study uncovered the psychological impact of negative social attitudes towards the people who visit sexual health services and to the staff who work there. Sexual health nurses manage the results of stigma daily and reveal in their interactions with clients a process of destigmatisation. |

Investigates current responsibilities of nurses in advanced roles (NAR) in the Western Pacific. Uses a Delphi survey to identify key barriers and challenges for enhancing role development within the country and the region. Conducts semi-structured individual interviews with 55 national experts from clinical, academic and/or governmental backgrounds in 18 countries, to identify strategies for establishing nurses in advanced roles to improve equitable access to healthcare in the region. |

The author traces the development of rural nursing, which began as an assistant role for general practitioners, to the present role which incorporates advanced nursing practice. She reports the results of two surveys of nurses' roles and skills, from 1996 and 1999-2000. Specific rural competencies are identified, in managing isolation, professionalism in a small community, nurse/patient relationships in a small community, and independence. |

| Abstract |
This paper describes a collaboration between library staff and nurse educators, where information literacy skills are strengthened and embedded in the curriculum. A case-study approach was used with both quantitative and qualitative data. An anonymous questionnaire was distributed to all nurses enrolled in graduate courses in the second semester of 2002. Interviews were then undertaken with library staff. It was found that the university library services were not used by 43% of graduate nursing students . The library staff responded by developing a number of initiatives which aimed to improve awareness of services, access and provide education in a bid to improve literacy skills. |

The researcher found little information on the two lying-in (maternity) wards of the first two Dunedin Hospitals. The book presents historical records outlining obstetric nursing procedures and maternity culture at the Dunedin Hospitals, The Benevolent Institution, The Batchelor Maternity Hospital, and Queen Mary Hospital. It covers cultural, social and legislative changes over the period, and examines conditions and pay for nursing staff across this time. A chapter on the evolution of baby care looks at changes in acceptable practices around nursery care, breast and bottle feeding, and medical procedures. The book has an extensive list of appendices, including staff lists, training notes for staff, duty lists, and interviews with staff and patients. |

This project is a study of the barriers perceived by perioperative nurses to accessing and using research-based information. A survey questionnaire was distributed to 184 perioperative nurses working in five public and two private hospitals in the Auckland area. The number of completed questionnaires was 106 (57.6%). The results showed that the lack of time during work hours was ranked as the highest barrier. The results also showed that many nurses feel they do not have the skills to find and appraise research articles. |
