Abstract: Conducts thematic analysis to identify two predominant gender scripts: of nursing as women's work, and that men who nurse are homosexual. Notes the associated themes of the effect of negative stereotyping on male nurses' career choice, and their resistance to the stereotype of normative masculinity. Considers that the same barriers to men becoming nurses have remained unchanged since first identified and discussed in the 1960s.

Abstract: Traces the development of the nurse practitioner role in NZ since its establishment in 2001, using a discourse analytical approach to examine those discourses that have defined the role. Employs both textual and discursive analysis of texts from published literature and from nine interviews with individuals influential in the evolution of the role. Examines political perspectives and disciplinary practices dating back to the Nurses Registration Act of 1901. Considers the implications of an autonomous nursing profession in both practice and regulation.

Abstract: Undertakes an evidence-based practice pilot project to examine the effectiveness of simulation-based learning in teaching nursing students to become aware of the role of stress, anxiety and distraction in medication errors. Stresses the importance of medication-error prevention at the pre-licensure level, by increasing awareness of patient safety culture. Notes the need to teach nursing students self-awareness of the distractions and stresses within the clinical environment and therefore the need for self-care to avoid medication error.

Abstract: Investigates nurses' catheter management practices, by means of an audit, as documented in a newly-introduced self-administered indwelling catheter-management checklist incorporating four components of catheter care in a catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) prevention bundle. Identifies these components of the bundle of care as: minimisation of inappropriate catheter use, aseptic insertion of catheters, adherence to catheter maintenance guidelines, and ongoing review and evaluation of catheter necessity. Shows that implementation of care components decreases bacteriuria rates and CAUTI when used together in standardised clinical checklists and performed collectively by nurses. Employs a quantitative research design as part of a mixed-methods study conducted at two surgical wards in a public hospital in Auckland where 50 nurses completed 175 checklists.

Abstract: Examines nursing students' knowledge about services, their access to facilities and their confidence in referring sources of health promotion to other students. Offers a web-based survey to nursing students at 23 nursing schools providing undergraduate nursing education in NZ. Conducts descriptive statistical analysis and compares groups based on age, year of study and ethnicity, using 2-sample t-tests. Describes the responses regarding service availability, health-promoting aspects of each campus, and confidence in provision of health advice.

Abstract: Seeks to develop a better understanding of the undergraduate nursing students' experience of their clinical placement in mental health, and to identify the influences on student learning in an acute adult mental health service. Enrols a cohort of 13 nursing students to analyse their lived experiences through their written reflections on practice, which offered important insights into the students' experience of their first mental health clinical placement. Identifies six themes by means of thematic analysis.

Abstract: Examines NZ registered nurses' experiences of aggression and violence and the impact of aggression management training (AMT) on their experiences. Collects data using an internet survey incorporating Collins' Attitudes Towards Aggressive Behaviours Questionnaire. Rates the effect of participation in AMT on exposure to aggression or violence and its impact on attitudes towards aggression and violence.
