Abstract: Investigates wheether the impact of a co-located psychological service to which Primary Care Providers cn refer patients with mild to moderate mental health needs, would impact on the well-being of the providers at work. Describes Focused Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (FACT) services delivered by psychologists working in a a large primary care practice in the lower North Island. Conducts interviews with GPs, nurse practitioners (NP) and registered nurses (RN), analysing the data using thematic analysis. Finds an inverse relationship between the FACT service and the well-being of staff.

Abstract: Presents the experience of an internationally-educated nurse (IEN) who immigrated to the UK from India. Shares insights about the social and professional challenges faced by IENs, with perspectives from the nursing literature. Examines the tensions between the needs of recruiting organisations and the needs of IENs working in new countries.

Abstract: The researchers conducted a study to compare self-reported changes in both frequency and quality of performance of nursing behaviours in a cohort of recently graduated nurses undertaking a one year entry to practice programme. Thirty-three nurses were surveyed, seven weeks after beginning the programme and again seven months later, using a modified version of Schwirian's (1978) Six-Dimension Scale of Nursing Performance (6-DSNP). Over the study period participants reported significant increases in frequency of performance for the domains of leadership, critical care, teaching/collaboration, and planning/evaluation. Significant increases in the quality of nurse behaviours in the domains of critical care, planning/evaluation and interpersonal relations/communication were also reported. The modified Schwirian 6-DSNP was found to be a useful instrument for measuring nurses' self reporting of performance during periods of transition.

Abstract: Presents a qualitative exploration of factors that influence eight newly-graduated nurses as they endeavour to practice ethical mental health nursing. Gathers data from in-depth interviews with the participants, analysed using a thematic analysis method. Considers aspects of the social and political context within which the participants are situated.

Abstract: For this study, an anonymous survey was sent to registered nurses in their first year of practice. From the 1169 survey instruments that were distributed, 551 were returned completed (a response rate of 47%). The most common inappropriate behaviour by patients involved verbal threats, verbal sexual harassment, and physical intimidation. There were 22 incidents of assault requiring medical intervention and 21 incidents of participants being stalked by patients. Male graduates and younger nurses were especially vulnerable. Mental health was the service area most at risk. A most distressing incident was described by 123 (22%) of respondents. The level of distress caused by the incident was rated by 68 of the 123 respondents (55%) as moderate or severe. Only half of those who described a most distressing event indicated they had some undergraduate training in protecting against assault or in managing potentially violent incidents. After registration, 45 (37%) indicated they had received such training. The findings of this study indicate priorities for effective prevention programmes.

Abstract: Interviews 14 participants, 10 older and experienced health professionals, and four managers. Describes the lived experience of health professionals ageing at work, and of the managers interacting with them. Demonstrates that the ability of older practitioners to adapt to meet the ongoing physical demands of practice and their shifting workplace environment determines whether they will be valued at work and remain in their roles.

Abstract: In 1999 primary health care in New Zealand was in the process of change from the current personal health care model, which focuses on general practitioner based care, to a population and community based health care programme. Carryer, Dignam, Horsburgh, Hughes and Martin (1999) submitted a report to the National Health Commission entitled “Locating Nursing in Primary Health Care”. This report envisaged that nurses in primary health care would be part of interdisciplinary teams, act autonomously and undertake community consultation and education. The submission suggested that nurses, currently working in primary health care, were alraedy prepared and able to move across into the new form of primary health care, without further education or training.

Abstract: This action research inquiry explores communication and nursing practice in an effort to improve practice and enhance patient care. Action research is a critical reflective process that involves spirals or cycles of planning, acting, reflecting/evaluating and replanning the next cycle. Using ear syringing as a procedure, in the general practice setting and at two separate surgeries, the author and another practice nurse co-researched this study during working hours. Twelve people consented to participate in the research that involved the audiotaping of each ear syringing interaction. Following each transcription of the recording, the researchers read their own and then each other's transcripts, and listened to the recordings. They discussed and reflected on their findings and planned the next cycle. Throughout the process, the researchers found a number of areas of practice to change or enhance. Changes included the use of technical language such as “contraindications” and “auditory meatus”, the side effects of syringing, improvements in communicating situations where ear syringing is not recommended and the options available, and post procedure information. These changes became a significant challenge, for example when both researchers forgot the changes, thus repeating previous errors and omissions. This factor highlighted the need to practise any changes prior to interactions, and to have a cue card on hand to facilitate recollection and to cement improvements into practice. Although time constraints limited this inquiry to three cycles, at the final meeting the researchers agreed to continue the reflective process they had begun to explore their practice.
