  Abstract This paper uses two perspectives, a feminist analysis and emancipatory leadership model, to analyse the practice and philosophy of leadership. It finds the important components of leadership include communicating understanding, developing a sense of community, and reconstituting the power relationships. This challenges traditional leadership perspectives which privilege individuals hierarchically appointed, or with deemed alienable qualities or traits.

  Abstract This paper will focus on nursing leadership, in particular the place of whanau ora in nursing practice. It explores one Maori and one tauiwi leadership style in relation to nursing practice in a whanau ora context. A critical appraisal of the Maori leadership style is given alongside discussion of how it promotes positive shifts in the health status of Maori communities. Finally, the paper discusses how this Maori leadership style supports the learning and development of Maori student nurses preparing for registered practice.

  Abstract The author argues that the involvement of nurses in the decision-making of health organisations is essential to maximise the contribution of nurses and promote positive outcomes for patients. The particular competencies discussed are those proposed by Van Maurik (1997), namely ability to understand and manage organisational politics, work facilitatively with people and circumstances, and build a feeling of purpose.

  Abstract This paper discusses legal issues associated with the seclusion of acutely disturbed patients in psychiatric hospitals in Australia and New Zealand. There continues to be great variation in opinion and operational definition as to whether seclusion is a medical treatment, nursing intervention and management tool, or merely a form of situational restraint. Reflecting this lack of clarity, mental health acts and policies concerning the regulation and practice of seclusion lack consistency and focus across geographical boundaries and jurisdictions. Australian and New Zealand legislation and institutional policy is discussed in order to shed light on the contemporary issues highlighted by this controversial nursing practice. The authors note that mental health professionals must continue to review the practice of seclusion and to actively promote the use of acceptable alternatives. In addition nurses and other mental health professionals have a responsibility to understand current legislation and policy frameworks and to influence change where this is necessary to ensure the best practice possible in their clinical area.

  Abstract This book covers obstetrical care from a nursing perspective at the Dunedin Hospital's Maternity Units. The researcher found little information on the two lying-in (maternity) wards of the first two Dunedin Hospitals. The book presents historical records outlining obstetric nursing procedures and maternity culture at the Dunedin Hospitals, The Benevolent Institution, The Batchelor Maternity Hospital, and Queen Mary Hospital. It covers cultural, social and legislative changes over the period, and examines conditions and pay for nursing staff across this time. A chapter on the evolution of baby care looks at changes in acceptable practices around nursery care, breast and bottle feeding, and medical procedures. The book has an extensive list of appendices, including staff lists, training notes for staff, duty lists, and interviews with staff and patients.

  Abstract This thesis provides an interpretive critique of the way in which knowledge is viewed, transmitted and crystallized in the practice worlds experienced by four registered nurses working in acute care hospital settings. The theoretical assumptions of critical social theory underpin both the methodological approach (case study) and the analysis of data. In-depth unstructured interview, a critically reflexive dialogue between the investigator and participant focussed on the practice world experiences of the nurse, was the principle research method. A brief analysis of documentation was also undertaken.It is argued that previous studies related to nursing practice, and to the social worlds of nursing, have been limited by their failure to take account of the socio-political context in which nursing takes place. There has been a tendency to treat the transmission of knowledge in nursing and nursing practice process of information exchange. No account of socially generated constraints on personal and professional agency, or of systematic distortions in communication within the practice setting are therefore given.The analysis of data in this study demonstrates the way in which constraints on personal and professional agency were experienced by each of the four participants. In particular, practice expressing the participant's professional nursing knowledge and values ws often denied in the face of shared understandings reflective of the institutional ideology. These shared understandings included a belief in the legitimacy of medical domination over other social factors and the support of doctor, rather than nurse or patient, centered practices.This study demonstrates that the way that nurses and other social actors come to “know” and interpret their social worlds is dependent on the socio-political contest in which that knowledge in produced. It also shows how this knowledge may be treated ad though it were 'an object'. This tendency to treat existing social relationships and practices as 'natural' hence unchallengeable masks possibilities for transformative action within the practice of nursing.It is argued that a particular form of knowledge is required if nurses are to overcome the types of constraint experienced by these four nurses. This knowledge, emancipatory knowledge, is that developed in the process of shared, socially critical self-reflection rather than solitary, self-critical reflection
