  Abstract The role of storytelling in any society fulfils multiple functions such as maintaining culture, holding history, teaching genealogical lessons, imparting wisdom, entertaining, passing on knowledge. The author suggests that nursing, historically described as a craft with an oral tradition, could be seen to be quietly moving away from the practice of storytelling. Or has it? She asked this question and began to realise that her practice and relationships with colleagues had always been based on stories and storying. To explore this phenomenon, she began to describe her day to day practice in story form, and began to position stories she had previously written. In her work of oncology palliative care nursing within a community setting in New Zealand, the stories proved crucial to her role as an educator, and companion of patients and their families. In this paper she examines how she uses story for her benefit, the patients' benefit, but mainly for the benefit of nursing. She examines from her own perspective, some underlying themes that reinforce the need to continue this ancient tradition and explore the role, value and function of storytelling within nursing.

  Abstract This research project is concerned with the risk of vicarious traumatisation for psychiatric mental health nurses. Vicarious traumatisation is an occupational hazard that is largely unrecognised and unaddressed in the profession. The paper explores the nature of vicarious traumatisation, and its contemporary conceptualisation in the literature on helping-induced trauma. Findings from the literature search and understanding of the construct of vicarious traumatisation are considered against the essence of psychiatric mental health nursing, the therapeutic relationship and use of self, and the nature of daily practice. After consideration of the potential risk of vicarious traumatisation for the profession it is argued that it is a real risk and is likely to impact on all areas of psychiatric mental health nursing practice. Support for the position that vicarious traumatisation is not well recognised and understood is offered. The paper concludes with recommendations that psychiatric mental health nurses and the profession take serious note of vicarious traumatisation as a risk, and there is an ethical imperative for psychiatric mental health nurses to take measures to inform themselves of and engage in processes of risk management for nurses and clients.

Explores the effectiveness and validity of the Waterlow scale in acute care settings for the prevention of pressure injuries by means of a synthesis of the information from 11 studies examining the validity, reliability, feasibility and cost implications of using the Waterlow scale. Recommends its use in conjunction with clinical judgement.

  Abstract Considers whether the Canterbury Dedicated Education Unit model of clinical teaching and learning can support graduate registered nurses in their first year of practice. Uses a descriptive exploratory case-study approach to gather data via three focus groups with a total of eleven participants. Undertakes thematic analysis to identify patterned meaning across the dataset from which two primary themes emerge: support, and recruitment and retention. Identifies five associated sub-themes: peer support, organisational support, liaison nurse support, team support for the graduate registered nurses, and team support for the staff. Reveals the significant contribution made by the Nurse Entry-to-Practice Programme Liaison Nurse as a conflict broker.

  Abstract This paper explores, through the use of a case study, an evidence-based diagnostic reasoning process utilising the framework followed by Dains, Baumann and Scheibel (1998). This framework, as described by these authors, involves an inductive process of reasoning, which leads to formulation of a hypothesis that is then analysed using an evidence-based approach. From this analysis, a likely diagnosis can be made and appropriate therapeutic intervention initiated. This research demonstrates that although an evidence-based approach is the ideal, sometimes clinical intuition is equally important to the clinical outcome.

  Abstract Evaluates the SIP/PIP process to illuminate the views of the nurse managers and preceptors on the effectiveness of the SIP/PIP programme in ensuring competent practice and provides recommendations for improvement and strengthening of the framework. Uses a qualitative approach with data collected through individual semi-structured interviews with preceptors and nurse managers. Due to lack of participation in the quantitative arm a mixed-method study was not completed using an anonymous survey. Undertakes thematic data analysis utilising NVIVO 10 software. Draws four major themes from the qualitative data: (1) Feedback- insight loop, (2) Process clarity, (3) Relationships, commitment & reflective response to participation in the SIP/PIP process, (4) Barriers and enablers to the SIP/PIP process.

  Abstract The authors review the literature on the residual effects of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), which can include fatigue, foot drop or numbness, reduced mobility and nerve tingling. In GBS the peripheral nerves are attacked by the body's defence system, an auto-immune attack, and as a result, the myelin sheath and axons of nerves are impaired. The pathophysiology of the illness and long term effects are presented, and implications for nursing care and rehabilitation are discussed. Two case studies are included which illustrate coping with the long-term effects of GBS, the effect of GBS residuals on extreme fatigue and depression.

  Abstract This article reports on the New Zealand part of an international study, using agreed study design and instruments, to determine the direct and indirect costs of nursing turnover. These costs also include the systemic costs, estimated by determining the impacts of turnover on patient and nurse outcomes. It presents the findings from the pilot study conducted in six countries to test the availability of costs and suitability of the instrument. Reports the results from a survey of directors of nursing in 20 of the 21 district health boards on turnover and workplace practices.

  Abstract This article reviews the use of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for pregnant women suffering from depressive symptoms. CBT provides a structured, short-term, collaborative process between clinician and client, using strategies and techniques to identify dysfunctional thinking and beliefs, challenge and change these beliefs, then implement new rational beliefs and behaviours. A process of engagement, assessment and conceptualisation is followed by treatment planning and implementation, and modification of dysfunctional thinking and behaviours. Use of CBT to treat depression in women during pregnancy is supported by the literature, especially where pharmacological intervention is declined or contraindicated. Pregnancy can bring stressors that combine with biological factors and core beliefs to contribute to depressive symptoms.

  Abstract This report is an evaluation of the academic journey undertaken by a group of newly graduated nurses who were sponsored by a New Zealand district health board to work in a variety of primary health care nursing settings. The impetus for this pilot employment option was the Ministry of Health's focus on primary health care nursing and workforce development for this sector and the Expert Advisory Committee for primary health care nursing's recommendations to district health boards regarding employment of graduate nurses and support for them to engage in post graduate study. Evaluation participants were primarily the graduate nurses who were interviewed at the end of their first year of practice which was following programme completion then again nine to ten months later. Findings include the nurses reflections on what supported them and what acted to impede as barriers to their learning success and practice development. The report concludes with five recommendations that can be used to ensure that the travels of future newly graduated nurses taking this pathway are supported, safe and successful.

  Abstract The question explored in this research project is: What are inpatient registered nurses' perceptions of the factors which influence therapeutic relationship development? The literature reviewed for this project includes the history of interpersonal relationships in nursing; therapeutic relationships; what constitutes these relationships. Also discussed is literature about phenomenology as the underlying theoretical and philosophical position that informs the research method. To answer the research question a single focus group was used to gather data from a group of registered nurses practising in inpatient mental health units. Focus groups as a data collection method produce data and insights that would not be accessible without the group interaction. The key themes to emerge from the data analysis were; time, environment, knowing / self-awareness, compassion and power imbalance / empowerment. These key themes are discussed in relation to the literature and the wider context of the mental health care environment. The contribution this research makes to nursing includes a list of recommendations to nurses, nurse leaders and managers who aim to provide therapeutic mental health unit environments.

The article explains the workings of this model so it can be used by educators to for students in the mental health setting.
