Abstract: Explains the need for nurse-led Patient-at-Risk-Teams(PART) to prevent unnecessary ICU admissions. Investigates which nurse allocation policy between PART and ICU would result in the best outcomes for patients and hospitals. Provides econometric models to estimate the impact of critical care nurses on hospital length of stay. Proposes queueing and simulation models to obtain the optimal nurse allocation policy for minimising the ICU mortality rate. Validates proposed models at Middlemore Hospital from 2015 to 2016. Estimates the financial and mortality impact of allocating another nurse to PART per shift.

Introduces the Oral History and Sound Collection at Turnbull Library, focusing on the Nursing Education and Research Foundation (NERF) special collection of oral history interviews with nurses, which arose out of the NERF Oral History Project. Provides examples of three oral history interview records from the collection.

Abstract: This social-cultural history explores the changing context, culture, and identity of psychiatric nurses working in New Zealand public mental hospitals between 1939 and 1972. Primary documentary sources and oral history interviews provided the data for analysis. The thesis is divided into two periods: 1939 to 1959 when asylum-type conditions shaped the culture of the institutional workforce, and 1960 to 1972 when mental health reform and nursing professionalisation challenged the isolation and distinct identity of mental hospital nurses. Between 1939 and 1959 the introduction of somatic treatments did not substantially change nursing practice in mental hospitals. Overcrowding, understaffing and poor resources necessitated the continuance of custodial care. The asylum-type institutions were dependent on a male attendant workforce to ensure the safety of disturbed male patients, and the maintenance of hospital farms, gardens, and buildings. Although female nurses provided all the care and domestic work on the female side, the belief that psychiatric nursing was physically demanding, potentially dangerous, and morally questionable, characterised the work as generally unsuitable for women. Introduction of psychiatric nursing registration which was a move toward professionalisation did little to change the dominance of a male, working-class culture. From 1960 to 1972 psychiatric nurses' identity was contested. New therapeutic roles created the possibility of the nurses becoming health professionals. Their economic security and occupational power, however, was tied to an identity as unionised, male workers. As psychiatric nurses were drawn closer to the female-dominated nursing profession through health service changes and nursing education reform, both men and women acted to protect both their working conditions and their patients' welfare. To achieve these ends, they employed working-class means of industrial action. By accepting the notion that psychiatric nurses' identity was socially constructed, this thesis provides an interpretation that goes beyond the assumption that nursing is a woman's profession. Instead, it presents psychiatric nursing as a changing phenomenon shaped by contested discourses of gender, class and professionalisation. Nursing in public mental hospitals attracted ordinary men and uncommon women whose collective identity was forged from the experience of working in a stigmatised role.

Abstract: This research study was designed to identify ways of enhancing patient safety during the administration of medications within the New Zealand context. The researchers employed a multi-method approach that included a survey using the Safety Climate Survey tool, focus groups and three clinical practice development groups. The authors conclude that the outcomes of this study indicate that practice development initiatives, such as the ones outlined in this project, can have a positive effect on nurses' perceptions of organisational safety, which in turn has been demonstrated to have a positive impact on patient safety.

Abstract: The Plunket orientation programme, first implemented in 1994, aims to prepare new Plunket Nurses for autonomous practice within the complexity of community based nursing. This study seeks to identify what new Plunket Nurses feel are their orientation needs. An evaluation research approach was used. An examination of the literature explored how orientation is conducted and the needs of nurses in orientation. Key aspects in relation to orientation were identified as including socialisation, job change, new graduates, preceptorship, orientation frameworks and retention. A focus group followed by a postal survey were utilised to collect data from new Plunket Nurses nationwide to ascertain what they thought their orientation needs were. Data analysis was completed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The results of the study identified key orientation needs for new Plunket Nurses. These were an orientation programme, preceptorship, clinical skills teaching, time in own area and beginning autonomous practice, administration needs and support needs. The participants recommended quality preceptorship and early clinical teaching from the Clinical Educator. There was a general dissatisfaction with orientation as it stands in preparing them for their role as a Plunket Nurse. Recommendations to the Plunket Management Team were made based on the results of this study.

Abstract: Explores how nurses working in a tertiary-level paediatric health-care facility understand research and evidence-based practice. Offers a descriptive, self-reporting, anonymous questionnaire to 600 paediatric nurses, asking both quantitative and qualitative questions on attitudes, knowledge and barriers relating to research and evidence-based practice utilisation. Identifies the barriers to undertaking research/evidence-based practice in paediatric nursing practice.

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to examine the discourses of scientific mothercraft and their implications for the nurse-mother relationship, drawing on the author's recent research into surveillance and the exercise of power in the child health nursing context. The application of Foucauldian discourse analysis to the texts generated by interviews with five New Zealand child health nurses confirms that this paradoxical role has never been fully resolved. Plunket nurses primarily work in the community with the parents of new babies and preschool children. Their work, child health surveillance, is considered to involve routine and unproblematic practices generally carried out in the context of a relationship between the nurse and the mother. However, there are suggestions in the literature that historically the nurse's surveillance role has conflicting objectives, as she is at the same time an inspector and family friend.
