Abstract |
In this research, three female registered nurses relived their experiences of being caregiver to a family member who was ill, elderly or had an enduring illness and explored whether they chose, or felt obligated, to assume the role of caregiver because they were nurses. This research was an exploratory descriptive study utilising narrative as inquiry and the method of story-telling. It is women-centered, taking into account the unpaid role of caregiving within families most often fulfilled by women. Four main themes were identified and renamed to highlight research findings – these were the culture of nursing, silence of the nurses, emotional cloudiness, and the natural role of the nurse. Through this study it is hoped that nurses will be more aware of the impact their caregiving roles have had on their lives. The importance in acknowledging the effects of caregiving, relevance of informing employers to promote supportiveness, implications for workforce development and recognising the loss of objectivity in caring when emotions are involved, are identified in this research. The author suggests that further indepth research about these concepts would be a valuable contribution to the nursing profession and ideas for future research have been identified. |

Aims to develop a new empirical method for assessing the similarity of mental models in surgery, focusing on laparotomy; to begin the process of validation of the new approach; and to demonstrate how the new approach could be used in clinical practice. Develops a software application (Momento) to sort key tasks in order to capture the information on mental models regarding task sequence and responsibility. Asks 20 6-person operating room (OR) teams, each comprising 3 sub-teams consisting of anaesthesia, surgery and nursing, to complete Momento prior to 2 simulated emergency laparotomies. Suggests the Momento approach could be used to improve teamwork in OR. |

In this paper, the author explores the concept of 'professional terrorism'. He exposes discrimination against male nurses as being a form of professional terrorism, primarily as it is enacted through use of language. He presents the concept of horizontal violence as a way to understand why nurses, as a marginalised group, perform oppressive acts towards male nurses, who are similarly oppressed. He outlines the cost of such a culture on nursing practice and presents strategies for change. |

Abstract |
This article examines a growing number of cases in New Zealand in which parents and guardians are required to make life and death ethical decisions on behalf of their seriously ill child. Increasingly, nurses and other practitioners are expected to more closely inform, involve and support the rights of parents or guardians in such situations. Differing moral and ethical values between the medical team and parents or guardians can lead to difficult decision making situations. The article analyses the moral parameters, processes, outcomes and ethical responses that must be considered when life and death ethical decisions involving children are made. It concludes with a recommendation that nurses should be recognised as perhaps the most suitable of all health care personnel when careful mediation is needed to produce an acceptable moral outcome in difficult ethical situations. |

Abstract |
This research project was undertaken with the aim of making teaching and learning processes in the first year of the programme explicit to ensure successful strategies could be replicated and limitations addressed. Action research methodology was utilized to explore which tutors and students the philosophy of teaching, the student/tutor relationship, preferred learning styles and teaching methods, and influences on student learning. Findings elucidated that the philosophy and teaching methods used in the programme were congruent with the goals of the Polytechnic,, the curriculum aims, and current nursing ideologies. Students preferred small group, interactive teaching, did not always rate their ability accurately, and tended to downgrade their ability and did progressively less preparatory work for classes as the year progressed. Factors that impacted on the learning of this mainly mature group were external to the programme and included paid employment, family responsibilities, unexpected life events, lack of time and/or space to study, and financial problems. The research was used to determine the structure of the first year of the 1994 Bachelor of Nursing programme which articulated more clearly the process and pathway for students to become self directed learners. The research process was challenging and provided many useful insights for tutors and students |

Abstract |
The aims of this study were to illuminate the joint constructions of exemplary nurses and their lived experiences of being and becoming one. Inherent in being 'exemplary' was the notion of 'becoming', which involved the integration of knowledge and experiences through reflecting on the day-to-day of 'being a nurse'. Being exemplary was not about perfection but learning from every experience and integrating these into becoming. The author developed a creative qualitative and participatory method. Ten exemplary nurses were recruited and interviewed three times. They also provided supplementary data such as photos, poetry and writings. Analysis occurred through first and second level categorising and the use of writing as method. Writing became a way of knowing – assisting discovery and allowing reflection on the data in order to connect the categories and themes together in a coherent and workable whole. The author reports that the above method led to the following emergent findings. The pivotal construct was Authentic Being, through living a reflective life, surrounded by the major constructs of Love of Nursing, Making a Difference, Critical Friends, Walking the Talk and Backpack patients. These constructs directed a specific and comprehensive review of both the philosophical and nursing literature. This review was not used to expand or enlarge the findings but to enlighten, illuminate and clarify. Significant philosophical ideas were extended, developed and synthesised with the findings. The author suggests that the new knowledge that emerged from this research has profound implications for everyday nursing practice, undergraduate and post graduate nursing education, and for Charge Nurses and Senior Nurses, who are of vital importance as role models, mentors and critical friends. The results are significant and are important for nurses and the nursing profession and contribute to, and advance, nursing knowledge. |

Abstract |
The aim of this article is to outline best practice management strategies for nurses during the clinical application of civil commitment of mentally ill persons. A literature search on 'coercion' and 'civil commitment' was undertaken. Published and unpublished research undertaken by the authors in New Zealand on this topic was drawn upon. This research considered the use of civil commitment during admission to acute mental health services, acute forensic mental health services and community mental health services. The experience of coercion by service users coincides with the degree of restriction associated with the service they are involved in. Socio-demographic factors, clinical factors and the experience of coercive events have little bearing on the amount of coercion experienced. Rather, it is the pattern of communication and the use of 'procedural justice' that has the potential to ameliorate the amount of perceived coercion. The authors conclude that 'Procedural justice' aligns with the emphasis placed on the therapeutic relationship in mental health nursing and is an important consideration for nurses during the clinical application of civil commitment |
