Abstract: The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological was to unveil a deeper meaning and understanding of gerontology nursing, thus contributing to its value and worth as a speciality area of nursing. Conversations with four gerontology nurses were taped, transcribed and then analysed using van Manen's (1990) approach to researching lived experience. From the analysis, four cardinal elements emerged: true acceptance, personal knowing, being present, and being alive. Those four cardinal elements were reworked and further analysed to reveal three central aspects or essences of gerontology nursing. These essences were the centrality of temporality, the interconnectedness of human relationships, and the significance of the lived body. Temporality is demonstrated by nursing application of objective, or clock time, as well as subjectively in regards to the lived time of the clients. Interconnectedness is the lived human relationship between nurse and client and is represented by commitment, presencing/giving of self, connecting, and knowing the client holistically. The third essence is corporeality, which is portrayed by the gerontology nurses' distinguishing characteristics and their perception of the lived body of the nursed. The final analysis unveiled caring for the body, the act of seeing, and the joy of care as emergent essences of gerontology nursing. Language of nursing in relationship to 'basic nursing care' is critiqued for its potential to devalue gerontology nursing and, by association, old people.

Abstract: The Well Child/Tamariki Ora Health Book (the Plunket book) is a small booklet given to New Zealand mothers on the birth of a child. Although use of the book has decreased since it?s inception in 1920, it is frequently kept within the family and handed on from mother to child. Utilising an oral history approach, this study has traced the development of the Plunket book over time and explored the experiences of a group of 34 women and one man who have reflected on their ownership of, or involvement with, Plunket books. The study found that the book remains an effective clinical tool for mothers and nurses. Nurses use the book as a tool to help develop a relationship with a mother and her family, and to identify and build on strengths. Mothers have used the book as a tool to link past with present, to maintain kinship ties across generations, to deal with change intergenerationally, and in a manner that contributes to their self-identity as woman and mother. The study recommends that nurses and other health professionals continue to use the Plunket book as a clinical tool mindful of the fact that the book remains in use beyond the health professional?s immediate involvement with the mother and child, playing an important role in the context of the New Zealand family across generations.

Abstract: This article reports one aspect of a phenomenological study that described the lived experience of mothering a child hospitalised with acute illness or injury. The significance for mothers that nurses do the 'little things' emerged in considering the implications of this study's findings for nurses in practice. Seven mothers whose child had been hospitalised in the 12 months prior to the first interview agreed to share their stories. The resulting data were analysed and interpreted using van Manen's interpretation of phenomenology. This description of mothering in a context of crisis is useful in the potential contribution it makes to nurses' understanding of mothers' experience of the hospitalisation of their children. It supports the philosophy of family-centred care and highlights the ability of individual nurses to make a positive difference to a very stressful experience by acknowledging and doing 'little things', because it is the little things that matter to the mothers of children in hospital.

Abstract: The present paper draws on experiences and insights gained by a group of psychiatric nurse practice development facilitators whilst working with consumers, carers, clinicians and managers in the context of a practice development programme in a large metropolitan psychiatric hospital. The paper describes how the practice development facilitators were able to adapt techniques of motivational interviewing, commonly used in drug and alcohol treatment services, to help motivate change in an aged care setting. The lessons embedded within this experience are that people do want change, and that sustained change requires ownership and support. Practice development facilitators can assist in this process though the use of principles and strategies of motivational interviewing, which include increasing awareness of the need for change, supporting self-efficacy and managing resistance to change.

Abstract: This thesis contains a collection of stories gifted by four New Zealand Retrieval Team nurses who are experienced in the transport of patients. These nurses are commonly called flight nurses and they assist in the transport of patients via helicopter, fixed-wing aeroplane, large commercial aeroplanes and ambulances. While their practice is not exclusively in the helicopter there is an emphasis on this mode of transport in this thesis. Flight nursing is a scope of nursing practice where the use, and visibility, of nurses' stories is rare. The specific context of this research is positioned in one tertiary intensive care unit in New Zealand but it is anticipated that the stories from four flight nurses and the author's subsequent thoughts on them will resonate with flight nurses in other regions. The stories were collected using a storytelling methodology that has been informed by qualitative and feminist perspectives. The stories were either gathered and shaped using interview and transcription techniques with the storyteller and the researcher, or written by the storyteller. The thesis has been written as a narrative and chronicles the journey to the point of receiving the stories and the lines of inquiry in which they subsequently directed the author. The stories are central to this research and appear in their entirety. The reader is encouraged to create their own meaning from the stories. The stories themselves have several common threads, which are planning, communication, teamwork and the unexpected. The threads underpinning the stories are not unique to flight nursing practice and have been discussed in other scopes of practice. One area the author has chosen to explore in more depth is the impacts of technology, privacy, narrative pedagogy and disenfranchisement on the visibility of flight nurses' stories. The other area she has chosen for discussion is advanced and specialty nursing practice as it relates to flight nurses. As a result of this discussion she proposes her own view for advanced and specialty practice in flight nursing.

Abstract: This study has sought to quantify the attitudes of first-year medical, nursing and pharmacy students' towards interprofessional learning, at course commencement. The Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) (University of Liverpool, Department of Health Care Education), was administered to first-year medical, nursing and pharmacy students at the University of Auckland. Differences between the three groups were analysed. The majority of students reported positive attitudes towards shared learning. The benefits of shared learning, including the acquisition of teamworking skills, were seen to be beneficial to patient care and likely to enhance professional working relationships. However professional groups differed: nursing and pharmacy students indicated more strongly that an outcome of learning together would be more effective teamworking. Medical students were the least sure of their professional role, and considered that they required the acquisition of more knowledge and skills than nursing or pharmacy students.

Abstract: In 1997, Advanced Mental Health Nursing Programmes were funded nationally by the Clinical Training Agency using the funds made available subsequent to the 1996 Mason Report. The training leads to an award of either a post graduate certificate or diploma awarded by a tertiary education provider.A review was conducted with the aim to monitor the impact on service provision of advanced mental health nurse practitioner training. This was done by obtaining feedback through using an agreed standard questionnaire from course participants and mental health service providers.In seeking to learn more about the impact of these programmes, the CTA identified the following key issues:- what effect the courses may have had on mental health workforce make-up, skills and retention.- perceptions of programme delivery and content.- the impact on service delivery.Overall findings are shared which highlight that the course was seen as well organised and participants and service providers would recommend it to their colleagues. The greatest effect of the course appeared to be in developing more understanding of clinical supervision. Participating in the course had also led to positive changes in relationships with the clients and colleagues for more than three quarters of the group.The provision of an Advanced Mental Health Nursing Programme in 1997 has had many positive effects. The funding strategy and delivery models that have evolved may provide a useful template for other nursing specialty areas

Abstract: The focus of this thesis is the practice of the nurses employed in the Native Health Nursing Scheme in New Zealand from 1911 to 1930. These nurses were a vanguard movement for change in community nursing services as they established a new role and developed innovative ways of practicing nursing while claiming greater autonomy and accountability for nurses who worked in community settings. Consequently they contributed to an increase in status for nurses in New Zealand.The Native Health Nursing Scheme was established by the Health Department to replace the Maori Health Nursing Scheme, an initiative by Maori leaders for Maori nurses to provide nursing care for their own people. The original scheme had foundered amid under-resourcing, a lack of support from hospital boards and administrative chaos. Government policy for Maori health was openly assimilationist and the mainly non-Maori Native Health nurses carried out this policy, yet paradoxically adapting their practice in order to be culturally acceptable to Maori.Their work with the Maori people placed the Native Health nurses in a unique position to claim professional territory in a new area of practice. As they took up the opportunities for an expanded nursing role, they practiced in a manner which would develop the scope and status of nursing. The geographical isolation of their practice setting provided the nurses with the challenge of practicing in an environment of minimal administrative and professional support, while also offering them the opportunity for independence and relative autonomy. Obedience, duty and virtue, qualities highly valued in women of the day, were expected especially in nurses. These expectations were in direct contrast to the qualities necessary to perform the duties of the Native Health nurse. The conditions under which these nurses worked and lived, the decisions they were required to make, and the partnerships they needed to establish to be effective in the communities in which they worked, required courage, strength, organizational ability and commitment

Meldrum, L. B. B. (2006). Navigating the final journey: Dying in residential aged care in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Abstract: New Zealand statistics project that the aging population of people aged 65 years and over will more than double in the next decade. This has implications for palliative care providers including hospices and hospitals because long-term inpatient care is not generally provided by hospitals and hospices. When dying patients need long-term care, residential settings become an option. The level of palliative care in these facilities is dependent on staff training and numbers. In general, staff are not trained in palliative care, neither do they provide the multidisciplinary facets that define palliative care as undertaken by hospices. This paper describes a practice development initiative using storytelling as the vehicle for introducing the concept of the Liverpool Care Pathway (LCP) for the dying patient into residential aged care settings. With the emergence of a reflective paradigm in nursing the concept of storytelling as a teaching/learning tool has grown. Many staff in residential care settings come from diverse ethnic backgrounds where for some, English is their second language. Storytelling therefore can be a useful approach for learning because it can increase their communication skills. The author suggests that the Liverpool Care Pathway for the dying patient is a model that can be translated across care settings, hospice, hospital, and community. It can demonstrate a framework that facilitates multiprofessional communication and documentation and embraces local needs, culture and language to empower health care workers to deliver high quality care to dying patients and their family/whanau and carers. This paper also explores the role of a facilitator as an agent of change and discusses how the interplay of evidence, context and facilitation can result in the successful implementation of the LCP into residential aged care settings.
