Abstract |
This article reports data from 15 schools of nursing, surveyed to identify difficulties experienced by nurse educators with respect to entry, progression and programme completion of undergraduate nursing students. Risk assessment, along with a lack of clear policy and procedures were found to be the main problem areas. Difficulties were exacerbated for educators when there were challenges to their professional judgement, either from the Nursing Council of New Zealand or from within their own institution. The authors argue for more recognition of the dual role of nurse educators, and greater clarification of the Nursing Council of New Zealand role in regulating the student's programme entry and progression, and ultimate admission to the Register. It is suggested that the recently passed Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act (2003) provides nursing with an opportunity to address some of these issues. |

This research uses focus group methodology to examine the public health nursing practice with children living with a mentally ill parent. These children are often neglected, yet are at increased risk of developing mental illnesses themselves. The research data identified the burgeoning impact on public health nurses of such care, and found their role to be primarily assessment and advocacy. |

Abstract |
This paper explores the reaction of the author's colleagues when she returned to work disabled after recovering from an injury. In order to understand the new experience of disability and discrimination and to help answer what changed the behaviour of colleagues, the author considered evidence from the published literature. After considering many different models of disability, the social model of disability helped clarify and frame her own experience. Reflecting on this literature and personal experience, she suggests that there is acknowledgement that society's attitudes are changing slowly through governmental action and the activism of the disabled. However, she goes on to say, it is only through progressing education, experiencing disability, and continuing emancipatory research that progress will be made to release people with disabilities from their bonds of prejudice and oppression. |

Abstract |
On call emergency health services are becoming routinely provided by some rural nurses, predominantly within the South Island. Rural nurses have been advancing their practice to accommodate the limited availability of general practitioners in rural communities. Although this is becoming routine practice, the author has been providing a service such as this for the past 12 years. This dissertation describes this practice in relationship to the present social-political context, advancing nurse competencies and her experience of rural nursing in a rural town within the South Island. Particular significance for the rural nurse is the required independent practice and overall responsibility when remote from traditional medical oversight. Providing on call emergency care with the possibility of a broad spectrum of emergency situations while maintaining competence for the unpredictable frequency (or lack of frequency) of the rural emergency is the focus of this dissertation. The professional and personal risks are high for rural nurses when placed in situations they are not prepared for or unable to remain competent to manage. Implications resulting from the critique of the health service literature on this subject are identified. Firstly, rural nurses need to be insightful of their own emergency on call expertise and limitations. Secondly, rural nurses require ongoing education and thirdly that appropriate education is available and accessible to rural nurses. Lastly, rural nurses require maintenance of competency so these emergency skills are not lost. This dissertation and the resulting recommendations embrace Nursing Council of New Zealand Nurse Practitioner Competencies. The resulting outcomes fulfilling the rural nurse's need for maintenance of competency for emergency on call care, the community's need for safe appropriate emergency care and national legislation requirements. |

Abstract |
This paper examines the difficulties health professionals face daily when providing care for the mentally disordered offender in the court environment. The role of the court nurse is to provide care for people with mental health needs in the court and health professionals can find this a restrictive environment to work in. This is mainly due to the court's legal processes which are designed to punish rather than offer therapeutic alternatives. By advocating for the mentally disordered offender, the court nurse ensures the court is aware of an individual's mental health needs, thus reducing the prospect of inappropriate sentencing, and the associated stigmatisation that may occur as a result of a criminal conviction. |

Abstract |
This research considers the issues raised by the transfer from New Zealand to India of a degree for registered nurses. In the context of globalisation and the continuing migration of nurses, many countries are actively facilitating the transfer of educational programmes from other countries into their own. This transfer brings with it particular challenges for educators establishing and implementing programmes in a new environment and culture. Based on the experience and reflections of one educator involved in such a transfer, this research considers pedagogical issues such as addressing cultural safety in course content and delivery, expectations of teaching and learning styles, as well as the ethical issues raised by transferring a programme to another country in order to facilitate nurses' migration from it. |

Abstract |
The aim of this paper is to report on an exploratory, qualitative study exploring what people living with terminal illness considered were the areas of priority in their lives. Ten people living with terminal cancer were interviewed. Analysis of the interviews incorporated principles of narrative analysis and grounded theory. Over 30 categories were identified and collated into five inter-related themes (personal/intrinsic factors, external/extrinsic factors, future issues, perceptions of normality and taking charge) encompassing the issues of importance to all participants. Each theme focused on 'life and living' in relation to life as it was or would be without illness. Practical issues of daily living and the opportunity to address philosophical issues around the meaning of life emerged as important areas. The central theme, 'taking charge', concerned with people's levels of life engagement, was integrally connected to all other themes. The findings suggest that the way in which health professionals manage patients' involvement in matters such as symptom relief can impact on existential areas of concern. The findings challenge some aspects of traditional 'expert-defined' outcome measures. As this was an exploratory study, further work is needed to test and develop the model presented. |

Explores the humanistic values of professional nurses practising in medical ward environments and how these values are lived in day-to-day nursing practice on three medical wards in NZ using observations, focus groups, interviews, a burn-out survey and theoretical application. Challenges the nursing profession to acknowledge and address the visibility of nursing values in contemporary practice, as well as acknowledge the dissonance that exists between the values of nursing and the values that drive healthcare delivery. |
