Abstract: Examines the evolution of the enrolled nurse in NZ from the perspective of a registered nurse who has worked with enrolled nurses in both Britain and NZ. Analyses key documents from a critical perspective to consider the positioning of enrolled nurses in NZ, particularly from the point of view of the large number of Maori enrolled nurses. Makes recommendations for a more equitable future for those who undertake enrolled nursing.

Abstract: This phenomenological study describes what it is like to live with a schizophrenic illness and relates the understanding gained from this description to implications for nursing practice. The participants in the study were ten adults who have been diagnosed with schizophrenia, who take regular medication and who are living independant lives in the community. Over a period of sixteen months they were interviewed about effects of the illness on their everyday lives. During this time they explained the challenges and difficulties which have faced them, both during and long after the resolution of acute illness. As they describe it schizophrenia is a part of who they are.The narrative contained in this thesis presents the participants' stories in aggregated form, setting their experiences alongside ideas from the early work of Martin Heidegger, whose phenomenological writing informed the analysis and interpretation of the data. As the participants explain, schizophrenia has touched every aspect of their lives. Living with schizophrenia is shown to affect their whole being-in-the-world. It incorporates Being-with-others, living carefully and taking a stand on life. While hoping for a cure, their reality is of living with a chroinic ilness which has major effects on their lives. At the same time the participants are shown to define themselves not in terms of their illness and treatment, but in respect of their hopes and dreams and the stance each is taking on his or her own life. In this way their existential predicament is highlighted in the study. Participants are on the one hand very much like all people, while on the other hand they have to contend with very different concerns than do most others.

Abstract: This pilot descriptive study examines and measures the characteristics of preceptors of new graduate registered nurses undertaking the Nurse Entry to Practice Programme in an acute hospital in New Zealand. Thirty-three new graduate registered nurses at the five month stage of the programme completed a questionnaire pertaining to the characteristics of their preceptors. The questionnaires were adapted from the Ferrans and Powers (1998) Quality of Life Questionnaire. The adapted questionnaires were designed to measure the importance, satisfaction and overall quality of the preceptor's characteristics as perceived by the new graduate registered nurse, using a Likert Scale. Literature both international and national was examined to gain an understanding of the importance of the characteristics in question, in relation to the new graduate registered nurse preceptee experience. Descriptive data revealed the importance of characteristics as perceived by the new graduate nurse preceptee, and how satisfied the new graduate nurse was with their particular preceptor's characteristics. The results identified that the majority of new graduates were satisfied with the characteristics of their preceptor but there was evidence of negative discrepancies between the mean importance and satisfaction scores. The range of data between the scores of the overall quality of the preceptor uncovered areas where the quality of preceptorship was unsatisfactory as perceived by the new graduate nurse. The discrepancies in the data were examined and recommendations made for additional research, regarding selection and evaluation of preceptors of the new graduate registered nurse within the hospital environment.

Abstract: This study focuses on power themes in the nurse-patient relationship. The study is a critical reflection of the author's practice using a humanistic perspective from Hartrick Doane and Varcoe's (2005) model of relational family practice. It reviews the literature relating to power relationships in communication between nurses and patients and compares the ability to provide relational care in the home with hospital care. Practice examples demonstrate the shift in power relationships that the author had noticed since changing roles from hospital based to home care nursing. This is related to cultural, socio-environmental, historical and traditional influences on power in communication. The study is based on her reflection of the paradigm shift in her practice. Her practice moved from a problem solving approach to an empowerment, strengths based approach within partnership. The ethical challenges of discussing her practice in relation to clients has been managed by scrambling patient data so that it is not related to a single person and is focused on the author's nursing practice.

Abstract: This thesis used a Heideggerian Hermeneutic approach to explore the experiences of registered nurses who act as preceptors to undergraduate student nurses. The researcher interviewed fifteen volunteer registered nurses twice as preceptors to investigate their experience. The data generated was audio-taped and analysed. Four dominant themes emerged. The first, 'Becoming attuned – the call', related to registered nurses responding to the call to be preceptors to students in their clinical placement. The second, “The emerging identity of being-as preceptor: keeping the student in mind”, related to preceptors cultivating their own identity as preceptors as they worked with students in the world of nursing practice. The third, 'Assessing where the student is at: the preceptor and preceptee working and growing together', related to a constant evaluation by preceptors of students' knowledge, readiness to learn, and the provision of learning opportunities. The fourth, 'Preceptors as builders of nursing practice through teaching reality nursing', facilitated the preceptee's experience of the real world of nursing practice. An overall constitutive theme: 'Preceptors as the safeguarders of the practices of nursing', emerged as the essence of the experience.

Abstract: This paper explores the creative opportunities children might have to attend to their emotions and feelings following the death of a parent, grandparent or close friend. It presents the position that often children are left out of the process of caring for an adult when they are terminally ill and that has long term psychological implications. It also suggests that this has antecedents for the white New Zealand culture that were noted historically. In this research the author describes a personal journey that has shaped her current work as a hospice practice manager. The writer explores literature in psychological aspects of removing children from the dying room, creative therapies and the importance of sacred memories for the living child. The need to create memory that will embrace the child as a cloak enfolds them in their crisis stimulated the writer to offer a text in the personal narrative form. This text is presented in this form to enable other clinicians to access their own memories as survivors of grief in their own families. It is suggested that by enabling children and family to explore the importance of relating in the palliative phase of a person's life journey, good memories are created for the survivors.
