Abstract: This qualitative research project explored the experiences of nurse educators who sought to assess aspects, which could be related to facilitation of emotional competence, in nursing students. Focus groups were conducted in three different educational institutions, offering a Bachelor of nursing degree. Each of the participants had a teaching and assessment role within the school of nursing. The contributions of the nurse educators and their interactions were audio taped, transcribed and then later, analysed using thematic and focus group analysis practices. From the analysis of the experiences of the nurse educators, four predominant themes arose which capture the areas of importance to the participants. Student nurses can develop emotional competence by critically reflecting during classroom and clinical experiences. Continuous consideration must be made within each practicing area of nursing, of the environmental and relational challenges which inhibit or facilitate nurse's ability to practice with emotional competence. Educators and practicing nurses, who work alongside students, must uphold the expectation that emotional competence is a requisite ability and provide opportunities to foster emotional growth and skills to resolve conflict within the culture of nursing. A common view shared by the educators was that the profession of nursing needs to have a clear understanding of what constitutes emotional competence. Strategies to realistically incorporate emotional competence into the educational curriculum and competency based assessment opportunities within nursing education are required. Suggestions are presented from which undergraduate nursing education can facilitate development of emotional competence with those students working toward becoming a registered nurse. Emotional competence is suggested as an essential learning outcome in the movement toward transformative nursing education and a collaborative nursing profession.

Abstract: Describes a four-stage project to identify the current status of the nursing and support-worker workforce to develop a plan to match community health needs: profiles current population and health resources available in the community; profiles the current nursing workfoece; surveys local nurses regarding current work and future plans; seeks perspectives of local nurses, health managers and community representatives on strategies to sustain a future nursing workforce. Focuses primarily on the first two stages of the project.

Abstract: The incidence of postoperative complications is reduced with early identification of at risk patients and improved postoperative monitoring. This study describes the development and effect of a nursing preoperative assessment tool to identify patients at risk of postoperative complications and to reduce the number of acute admissions to ICU/HDU. All surgical patients admitted to a surgical ward for an elective surgical procedure (n=7832) over a 23-month period were concurrently scored on admission using the preoperative assessment tool. During the time period studied, acute admissions to ICU/HDU reduced from 40.37 to 19.11%. Only 24.04% of patients who had a PAS >4 were identified by the surgeon and/or anesthetist as being at risk of a postoperative complication, or if identified, no provision was made for improved postoperative monitoring. This study supports the involvement of nurses in identifying preoperatively patients at risk of a postoperative complication and in need of improved postoperative monitoring. The postoperative monitoring requirements for the PAS >4 patients were relatively low technology interventions.

Abstract: This study examines the discursive formation of professional nursing in one country, as revealed by the history of nursing in New Zealand. Michel Foucault's approach to historical research signifies a different level of analysis from conventional approaches, focusing not on the history of ideas but on an understanding of the present, a history of the present. A genealogical method derived from Foucauldian poststructuralism reveals how different understandings of nursing have occurred and have governed nursing practices and scholarship in different historical contexts. The archaeological investigation in this study reveals two moments of epistemic transformation, that is, two intervals of mutation and discontinuity. The Nightingale era in the 1880s precipitated the first epistemic shift – premodernism to modernism. The transfer of nursing education from hospital based training to the tertiary education sector, followed by the introduction of the baccalaureate degree, precipitated the second epistemic shift in the 1990s, the advent of postmodernism. Encompassing these two epistemes, six historical contexts are identified, where significant disruptions to the nursing discourses overturned previously held assumptions about what constituted a nurse. Each historical context is identified by specific discursive constructs. The first is colonial caring, the second the Nightingale ethos and the third heroic, disciplined obedience. In the fourth context, nursing is framed by, and within, discourses of skilled, humanistic caring, in the fifth, scientific, task focused managerialism, and in the 1990s, the sixth context, by multiple realities in an age of uncertainty.

Abstract: Examines designated registered nurse (RN) prescribing among community health nurses. Aims to understand how RN prescribers interact with other members of the health care team and to identify the social processes at play. Employs Bourdieu's 'Theory of Practice' to explore health care teams as competitive social spaces where health professionals vie to establish social position and authority. Recruits three health care teams representing primary health and specialty practice for interviews and observation. Highlights three themes from the data: social topography, working with an RN prescriber; and patterns of communication.

Abstract: This article presents discussion on some of the main findings of a recently completed study on nursing ethics in New Zealand. An interpretation of a nurse's story taken from the study is offered and suggestions are made for nursing ethics education.

Abstract: Identifies how traditional nursing practice in Maori communities may be enhanced. Highlights the need for nursing to broaden concepts of health, community, and public health nursing, to focus on issues of capacity-building, community needs, and a broader understanding of the social, political, cultural, and economic contexts of the communities primary health-care nurses serve. Explores how health is experienced by Maori women during in-depth interviews using critical ethnographic method, underpinned by a Maori-centred approach. Articulates a model of health that is a dynamic process based on the restoration and maintenance of cultural integrity, derived from the principle of self-determination.

Abstract: The original aim of the study was to find out through a questionnaire what child health/paediatric nurses in New Zealand/Aotearoa saw as their needs for post-registration education. Nurses were completing courses in the United Kingdom and returning to New Zealand/Aotearoa and realising that their nursing capabilities had improved. They became senior nurses with education responsibilities and exhibited political leadership among their colleagues in the field of child health/paediatric nursing. They were becoming increasingly concerned at the lack of any clinical courses in the specialty of child health/paediatric nursing to promote an appropriate standard of practice. It was intended that a research project about post-registration child health/paediatric education would assist concerned nurses to develop a programme. The time needed for such a project did not fit with a limited research paper. It was decided to reduce the project to a review of the literature on competence in nursing, with some comment on the specialty of child health/paediatric nursing. In order for nurses to find what they need to learn and know, an understanding of competence in nursing practice is required. Competence is defined as the ability of the nurse to carry out specific work in a designated area at a predetermined standard. Issues around competence, defining a scope of practice, development and assessment of competence, and regulation of nursing, are part of the context in which accountability for the practice of nurses sits.
