Abstract Investigates wheether the impact of a co-located psychological service to which Primary Care Providers cn refer patients with mild to moderate mental health needs, would impact on the well-being of the providers at work. Describes Focused Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (FACT) services delivered by psychologists working in a a large primary care practice in the lower North Island. Conducts interviews with GPs, nurse practitioners (NP) and registered nurses (RN), analysing the data using thematic analysis. Finds an inverse relationship between the FACT service and the well-being of staff.

Abstract Explores the NZ context underpinning adequate specialist nurse workforce supply, contending that effective workforce planning would be supported by the

development of a single unified framework for specialist nursing practice in NZ, with the potential to support accurate data collection and to enable service providers to identify and plan transparent and transferable pathways for specialist nursing service provision and development. Argues that advanced practice nursing frameworks assist in increasing productivity through building an evidence base about advanced practice, enhancing consistency and equity of expertise, supporting a reduction in role duplication, and enabling succession planning and sustainability.

Abstract Identifies changes that link nurses noticed in their practice areas as a result of participating in a pressure-injury prevention programme. Uses three nurse focus groups to collect data about changes in pressure-injury prevention within their practice areas following implementation of a link-nurse programme. Talks to 22 nurses about increasing awareness of pressure injury prevention, use of assessment tools and documentation, and acquisition of injury prevention equipment.

Abstract For this study, an anonymous survey was sent to registered nurses in their first year of practice. From the 1169 survey instruments that were distributed, 551 were returned completed (a response rate of 47%). The most common inappropriate behaviour by patients involved verbal threats, verbal sexual harassment, and physical intimidation. There were 22 incidents of assault requiring medical intervention and 21 incidents of participants being stalked by patients. Male graduates and younger nurses were especially vulnerable. Mental health was the service area most at risk. A most distressing incident was described by 123 (22%) of respondents. The level of distress caused by the incident was rated by 68 of the 123 respondents (55%) as moderate or severe. Only half of those who described a most distressing event indicated they had some undergraduate training in protecting against assault or in managing potentially violent incidents. After registration, 45 (37%) indicated they had received such training. The findings of this study indicate priorities for effective prevention programmes.

Abstract The authors note that the literature identifies that the transition from tertiary based training to the realities of industry expectations can be a stressful period for graduates. Various District Health Boards offer postgraduate papers within their graduate nursing programmes, resulting in graduates being expected to perform the role of a beginning practitioner as well as embark on postgraduate education during this first year. As yet, the authors note, there is little evidence available to substantiate the efficacy and impact of such papers. The purpose of this study was to explore graduate nurse's experience of postgraduate education within the Graduate Nurse Programme. The report contains the results of a survey of nurses within the Programme. This report details the results of that survey and make recommendations for consideration.

Abstract This report presents a longitudinal research study which evaluated the effectiveness of the twelve months New Graduate Orientation Programme introduced at Capital Coast District Health Board's Wellington Hospital in March 1998. The programme was implemented to assist new nursing graduate's transition into the role of registered nurse. The evaluation project took place over a three-year period. Three annual intakes of new graduates enrolled in the New Graduate Orientation Programme were surveyed by questionnaire on their completion of the programme.

Abstract This paper reports the findings of a three-year longitudinal study of registered nurses studying on a part-time basis towards their Bachelor of Nursing degree. Registered General Nurses and Registered General and Obstetric Nurses have been subject to a good deal of pressure to upgrade their qualifications – from their workplaces, but also from a recognition amongst themselves and their peers that to advance in their careers they need to have equivalent qualifications to new graduates. This study looks at what difference academic study makes to registered nursing practice.

Abstract Explores emergency nurses? perspectives and practices about the quality, importance and value of emergency nursing documentation in relation to their personal beliefs, past experiences and preferred systems of documentation; the practical and contextual factors that influence documentation practices within an emergency department (ED); their interests in documentation tools or systems; and their interests in relation to further development of documentation practices and systems. Conducts a qualitative descriptive study in which ten emergency nurses from one ED in New Zealand were interviewed using interactive interview methods, and asked to complete a Likert scale to identify the relevance of internationally- recognised general influences on documentation to their own practices in the context of an ED. Includes recommended routes to development through partnership, participation and process engagement, and strategies including document development, knowledge advancement and support.
