Abstract |
In this paper, the author explores the concept of 'professional terrorism'. He exposes discrimination against male nurses as being a form of professional terrorism, primarily as it is enacted through use of language. He presents the concept of horizontal violence as a way to understand why nurses, as a marginalised group, perform oppressive acts towards male nurses, who are similarly oppressed. He outlines the cost of such a culture on nursing practice and presents strategies for change. |

Abstract |
This dissertation came out of the author's wondering why there are still so few men going into nursing especially when the history of nursing reveals that men have been a part of nursing for a long time. In New Zealand it is only since the mid seventies that men have been able to gain the exact same nursing qualifications as their women colleagues. The author notes that men in nursing are still seen as unusual in that they work in a predominantly female occupation and have had their masculinity questioned by the myth that all men in nursing must be gay. There is also the notion that caring is a difficult task for men and is seen by society as a uniquely feminine ability. Both issues are related to dominant notions of masculinity. In addition to this there is currently a crisis in terms of a nursing shortage and it has been suggested that one way to resolve this crisis is to encourage more men into nursing. Thus this exploration as to why there are so few men in nursing is timely. Men who choose nursing as a career risk challenging the traditional roles of their gender stereotype. A comprehensive search of the literature from different disciplines reveals deeper issues than just the commonly held assumption that nursing is not masculine. Exploring the issues of gender with a particular focus on masculinity has uncovered the concept of hegemonic masculinity. This describes how gender is practiced in a way that legitimises patriarchy, reinforcing the dominant position of men over women as well as over other groups of men. It is these patriarchal attitudes that have seen men marginalised within nursing. On the one hand men in nursing could be seen as challenging the current dominant masculine ideal. However, on the other hand men in nursing may not challenge this hegemonic masculinity; instead often supporting the status quo in an effort to maintain their own masculinity. The author suggests that the implication for nursing, if it is to increase the numbers of men in the profession, is to challenge this notion of hegemonic masculinity. This needs to be done appropriately by critically examining this concept rather than by merely replacing one hegemony with another. He goes on to say that it is now time for nursing education to include a critical exploration of gender issues and how it relates to men as part of undergraduate nursing education for both men and women students. |

Abstract |
This paper is a culmination of the author's inquiry, reflection and critical thinking on the transitional phase that practice nursing is currently undergoing as part of the New Zealand Primary Health Strategy. The paper utilises both reflection-in-action and reflection-on-action as well as reflection-before-action, as a process. The author's starting point for this inquiry was attending the New Zealand Nurses Organisation Primary Health Conference in Wellington and reading a report from the Expert Advisory Group on Primary Health Care Nursing. Knowing that practice nurses are the majority of nurses working in primary health, she was concerned that changes to primary health were being driven with little reference or participation by them. The paper explores how practice nursing evolved in New Zealand and the developments that have occurred in the 30 plus years since its inception. It describes the role and current work of practice nursing in general practice, and highlights the constraints that have held back development and continue to do so. The 2002 New Zealand Primary Health Strategy is shown to provide an opportunity for development and enhancement, if some of the constraints are removed. As part of looking to the future the possibilities for practice nurses to lead the way in primary health development are explored. |

Abstract |
The author has taken a broad approach to this research to explore the views of Generation Y New Zealand Registered Nurses towards the nursing profession, the work itself and their career plans. This study arose out of the author?s interest in health care workforce planning for nursing and in particular the retention of young nurses given the current national and global shortage of nurses. Because of the broad and descriptive nature of the research, a wide variety of topics are included in the literature reviewed.
Chapter one provides background to the study and an overview of generational cohorts.
Chapter two explores selected literature relevant to the concept of work and the characteristics of the Generation Y workforce.
Other topics included in this chapter include Herzberg?s work motivation hygiene/maintenance theory and a selection of literature about key workforce recruitment and retention issues.

Identifies the experiences of NZ cancer nurses whose primary role is to care for patients aged 20 or older, and their whanau/family, and describes the factors that may influence care. Examines whether nurses received training in the management of stressors associated with caring for cancer patients, either during their training or while in the cancer workplace setting. Considers whether nurses working in peripheral (satellite) cancer centres were at more risk than their colleagues in larger regional centres. Conducts a quantitative, descriptive and anonymous survey of members of the Cancer Nurses' Section of the NZNO, using the Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL) questionnaire, which scores compassion fatigue, compassion satisfaction and burnout. |

Abstract |
The authors note that the literature identifies that the transition from tertiary based training to the realities of industry expectations can be a stressful period for graduates. Various District Health Boards offer postgraduate papers within their graduate nursing programmes, resulting in graduates being expected to perform the role of a beginning practitioner as well as embark on postgraduate education during this first year. As yet, the authors note, there is little evidence available to substantiate the efficacy and impact of such papers. The purpose of this study was to explore graduate nurse's experience of postgraduate education within the Graduate Nurse Programme. The report contains the results of a survey of nurses within the Programme. This report details the results of that survey and make recommendations for consideration. |

This report presents a longitudinal research study which evaluated the effectiveness of the twelve months New Graduate Orientation Programme introduced at Capital Coast District Health Board's Wellington Hospital in March 1998. The programme was implemented to assist new nursing graduate's transition into the role of registered nurse. The evaluation project took place over a three-year period. Three annual intakes of new graduates enrolled in the New Graduate Orientation Programme were surveyed by questionnaire on their completion of the programme. |

This paper reports the findings of a three-year longitudinal study of registered nurses studying on a part-time basis towards their Bachelor of Nursing degree. Registered General Nurses and Registered General and Obstetric Nurses have been subject to a good deal of pressure to upgrade their qualifications – from their workplaces, but also from a recognition amongst themselves and their peers that to advance in their careers they need to have equivalent qualifications to new graduates. This study looks at what difference academic study makes to registered nursing practice. |

Includes recommended routes to development through partnership, participation and process engagement, and strategies including document development, knowledge advancement and support. |

Abstract |
For this study, an anonymous survey was sent to registered nurses in their first year of practice. From the 1169 survey instruments that were distributed, 551 were returned completed (a response rate of 47%). The most common inappropriate behaviour by patients involved verbal threats, verbal sexual harassment, and physical intimidation. There were 22 incidents of assault requiring medical intervention and 21 incidents of participants being stalked by patients. Male graduates and younger nurses were especially vulnerable. Mental health was the service area most at risk. A most distressing incident was described by 123 (22%) of respondents. The level of distress caused by the incident was rated by 68 of the 123 respondents (55%) as moderate or severe. Only half of those who described a most distressing event indicated they had some undergraduate training in protecting against assault or in managing potentially violent incidents. After registration, 45 (37%) indicated they had received such training. The findings of this study indicate priorities for effective prevention programmes. |
