Abstract |
One proposed method for addressing concerns about a `theory-practice gap' in nurse education and perceived clinical shortcomings in beginning practitioners, is improved collaboration between education and practice. This paper is about a New Zealand nursing initiative to promote optimal learning outcomes for nursing students through supported hospital clinical experiences. It is implemented through a contractual partnership between Lakeland Health Limited in Rotorua, and Waiariki Institute of Technology. An associated “Clinical Nurse Educator Programme”, developed by lecturers at Waiariki's nursing school, prepares hospital nurses to be Clinical Nurse Educators. These “C.N.Es” replace and enhance the clinical role formerly provided by nursing lecturers, and short term contracted nurses. The programme is entering its fourth year with positive evaluations, and has extended into another hospital. Literature suggests that although educators are important, students may consider hospital nurses much more significant for their clinical learning and developing confidence 'in the real world'. These nurses are on hand, and generally have clinical credibility not afforded to academic staff. However, ward nurses, like contracted nurse teachers, have reported not having enough curriculum knowledge, nor teaching skills to optimise student learning. This C.N.E programme addresses these shortcomings through its selection of experienced nurses in current practice, and 50 hours of theoretical and practical course content, to prepare them for the role. This paper provides a clinical and personal perspective of the C.N.E programme, its beginnings, how it works locally, and process for its ongoing development. Not only does this programme provide a bridge between theory and practice for students during their clinical practicum placements, but communication, consultation and collaboration between education, practice and the workplace have also improved. Nurses in both sectors are confident that through the developing partnerships, students and future practice will benefit from the aim to provide students with 'the best of both worlds'. |

Abstract |
The author has taken a broad approach to this research to explore the views of Generation Y New Zealand Registered Nurses towards the nursing profession, the work itself and their career plans. This study arose out of the author?s interest in health care workforce planning for nursing and in particular the retention of young nurses given the current national and global shortage of nurses. Because of the broad and descriptive nature of the research, a wide variety of topics are included in the literature reviewed.
Chapter one provides background to the study and an overview of generational cohorts.
Chapter two explores selected literature relevant to the concept of work and the characteristics of the Generation Y workforce.
Other topics included in this chapter include Herzberg?s work motivation hygiene/maintenance theory and a selection of literature about key workforce recruitment and retention issues.

Abstract |
The purpose of the research was an evaluation of practice exemplars as a reflective process in teaching and learning about cultural safety. Six Maori, two Pacific and five Pakeha students, ranging in age from 30 to 40, took part in the research. The research findings revealed five sub themes: personal safety, power/ powerlessness, reflection, teaching and learning and cultural safety. The presentation, while acknowledging that cultural safety shared some commonalities with culture care theory, highlighted differences between the two. These included that cultural safety was explicit in identifying the inherent power of the nurse in health care relationships; related to the experience of the recipient of nursing care, and extended beyond cultural awareness and sensitivity; provided consumers of nursing services with the power to comment on practices; and contributed to the achievement of positive outcomes and experiences for them. It outlined the characteristics of a culturally safe nurse as a nurse who had undertaken a process of reflection on her/his own cultural identity and who recognised the impact their personal culture had on client care. |

Abstract |
Because nurses work in a wide range of settings they are well-placed to provide support for smokefree environments. The aim of this research was: to assess the knowledge of cessation, attitudes towards smoking, the provision of smoking cessation advice and treatment, and attitudes to and management of smokefree workplaces in a sample of nurses with practising certificates in New Zealand; and to describe the prevalence of smoking in nurses using the 2006 New Zealand census. One thousand questionnaires were posted to a random sample of 1000 nurses (500 community-based nurses, and 500 hospital-based) from the New Zealand Nursing Council register of nurses with current practising certificates. Statistics New Zealand provided results from the New Zealand Census of Population and Dwellings, 2006, for nurses by gender, practice area and cigarette smoking status. Responses were received from 371 (37%) of the nurses. They were enthusiastic about and committed to including smoking cessation in their practice, and to learning more about helping clients who smoke. Nine out of ten felt that it was part of their responsibility to advise clients to stop smoking. Nearly nine out of ten said they would be happy to spend an extra five minutes with each patient who smoked if they could effectively intervene. Over half had not received training for effective evidence-based smoking cessation interventions but three quarters were interested in learning more about how to help people stop smoking. The respondents' knowledge of the health effects of smoking was high, but there were gaps in knowledge of effective smoking treatments and a wide misunderstanding that nicotine causes cancer and heart disease. These gaps may limit nurses' ability to intervene effectively. Nurses supported their smokefree work policies although a fifth did not report support with enforcing these. Results from the 2006 census showed that smoking prevalence among nurses has declined from 18% in 1996 to 14% in 2006. Smoking rates in mental health nurses (29%) remain higher than the New Zealand general population (21%, census data). |

Abstract |
In 2003, as part of implementing the Primary Health Care Strategy, the Ministry of Health announced contestable funding, available over three years, for the development of primary health care nursing innovation projects throughout Aotearoa/New Zealand. The Ministry looked for proposals that would: support the development of innovative models of primary health care nursing practice to deliver on the objectives of the Primary Health Care Strategy; allow new models of nursing practice to develop; reduce the current fragmentation and duplication of services; and assist in the transition of primary health care delivery to primary health organisations. This report describes the findings from the evaluation of the 11 primary health care nursing innovations selected for funding by the Ministry of Health. It provides an overview of the innovations' success and of the lessons learnt from this policy initiative. |

Abstract |
This report reviews relevant literature pertaining to clinical career pathways and associated core competencies for nursing in New Zealand. The review identifies and analyses existing clinical career pathways for nurses and mental health workers in New Zealand, paying particular attention to the content, structure, strengths, criticisms and applicability to the development of a clinical career pathway for Maori registered nurses to work in Maori mental health (NGO organisations). This report is part of Te Rau Matatini's current work on the development of a career pathway for Maori registered nurses with mental health work experience to work in NGO, community settings. It is a preliminary report, based on existing literature. A subsequent report was planned detailing the career pathway developed by Te Rau Matatini, with strong guidance and input from Maori mental health nurses and the wider Maori mental health sector. |

Abstract |
Huarahi whakatu describes a pathway for recognising the expertise of nurses working in kaupapa Maori mental health services and recommends a professional development programme that can lead to advancement along the pathway. An emphasis on dual competencies – cultural and clinical – underlies the rationale for regarding kaupapa Maori mental health nursing as a sub-specialty. Eight levels of cultural competencies and twelve levels of clinical competencies are used to differentiate career stages and it is recommended that movement from one level to another should be matched by increased remuneration. The report also contains a recommended professional development programme to support the operationalisation of the career pathway. |

Abstract |
This project was initiated by the Ministry of Health to ensure a nationally coordinated approach to mental health nursing. The purpose of the project is to provide a national strategic framework for mental health nursing that will strengthen both nursing leadership and practice within the multi-disciplinary clinical environment. The framework reviews a range of key workforce issues identified by the Ministry of Health and provides strategies to move mental health nursing forward. The framework integrates directions from government mental health strategies, policies and directions, national and international literature as well as professional nursing requirements which aim to create a sustainable mental health nursing workforce using evidence based practice. The framework considers a range of key workforce issues identified by the Ministry of Health including: nursing leadership, nurse practitioners, standards, skill mix, clinical career pathways, professional supervision, education, research and recruitment and retention. |

Abstract |
The authors note that the literature identifies that the transition from tertiary based training to the realities of industry expectations can be a stressful period for graduates. Various District Health Boards offer postgraduate papers within their graduate nursing programmes, resulting in graduates being expected to perform the role of a beginning practitioner as well as embark on postgraduate education during this first year. As yet, the authors note, there is little evidence available to substantiate the efficacy and impact of such papers. The purpose of this study was to explore graduate nurse's experience of postgraduate education within the Graduate Nurse Programme. The report contains the results of a survey of nurses within the Programme. This report details the results of that survey and make recommendations for consideration. |

Abstract |
This report presents the findings and recommendations derived from a collaborative action research pilot project undertaken alongside the implementation of two nurse prescribing practicum courses. The students, teachers and supervisors participating in year long Masters' level prescribing practica at Auckland University of Technology (AUT) and Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT) were interviewed about their perceptions, concerns and actions relating the first time implementation of their respective practicum papers. Research findings suggest that the practicum implementation has been successful overall, however there is a need to refine delivery, and to review current funding arrangements. |

This paper reports the findings of a three-year longitudinal study of registered nurses studying on a part-time basis towards their Bachelor of Nursing degree. Registered General Nurses and Registered General and Obstetric Nurses have been subject to a good deal of pressure to upgrade their qualifications – from their workplaces, but also from a recognition amongst themselves and their peers that to advance in their careers they need to have equivalent qualifications to new graduates. This study looks at what difference academic study makes to registered nursing practice. |
