Abstract: The purpose of this essay is to examine why postgraduate education has become so important, to examine some of the issues around mandatory continuing education and the practical effect of this on a nursing career. Four strategies from the Ministry of Health, designed to facilitate changing nurse education, are discussed. The importance of Professional Development Recognition programmes is discussed along with the need for strong nursing leadership.

Abstract: Evidenced Based Practice is aimed at providing safe, effective and cost-appropriate health care. The utilisation of EBP in nursing has proved to be valuable not only for patients and nurses, but also for other health professionals and the wider community. However, despite the recognised benefits of EBP, a significant gap between theory and practice exists. This paper explores some of the issues behind not implementing EBP, such as comfort with traditional practices, lack of engagement with EBP, and time constraints.

Abstract: This article backgrounds the professional development programme instigated at Auckland Hospital in 1988, and reviews the achievements of the past 10 years. It describes PDP and distinguishes it from a clinical career pathway. Specific indicators were used to assess the achievement of the programme, and these are presented. Overall the programme achieved it's outcomes and at a reasonable cost.

Within a theoretical framework of literature development, nurse client relationships, and quality of care and attitudes are analysed. Abstract: This clinical case study takes an integrated approach to investigation and critical analysis of the complex physiological and pathophysiological treatment modalities instigated when a patient presents following acute traumatic head injury. A broad overview of the developmental physiology of the brain and an explanation of the mechanism of traumatic brain injury as it relates to alterations in cerebral blood flow, intracranial pressure and cerebral metabolism is presented. The author describes in narrative form the clinical presentation of a patient, her symptoms and initial treatment rationale. It concludes with analysis of the patients initial treatment priorities and symptom management during the first 48 hours of her care.

Abstract: This paper analyses how the programme co-ordinator for a diploma in mental health nursing used the Instructional Design process in order to identify aspects of teaching and learning that could further enhance the student development of critical thinking. Theoretical understandings of constructivist learning environments are outlined, and translated to this programme. Tools and techniques such as learning strategies, scaffolding, coaching and modelling are explained.
