  Title Listening to New Zealand nurses: A survey of intent to leave, job satisfaction, job stress, and burnout Type (down) Book Whole

  Abstract This study aims to identify work related factors contributing to New Zealand nurses' intent to leave the job. Two hundred and seventy five surveys (response rate = 68.8%) from a random sample of 400 nurses employed in one district health board were used to explore intent to leave the job. Three research questions directed the description of levels of job satisfaction, job stress, and burnout found in nurse participants, correlations between the three variables, and the identification of variables predicting intent to leave the job through regression analyses. The survey found levels of job satisfaction were high, job stress was low, and burnout was average. Specifically, lack of opportunity to participate in organisational decision making, control over work conditions, control over what goes on in the work setting (key Magnet Hospital characteristics) were not evident, and with pay rates, were the main sources of job dissatisfaction. Workload was the most frequently experienced source of stress by nurse participants. Twenty-five per cent of nurse participants reported high levels of intent to leave the job. Correlations suggested that reductions in job satisfaction influenced increases in job stress and burnout. Job stress was associated with increases in emotional exhaustion. Emotional exhaustion was influenced by eight job satisfaction, job stress, and burnout subscales. Five subscales (professional opportunities, praise and recognition, interaction opportunities, extrinsic rewards, lack of support) explained 26.2% of the variance in nurse participant's intent to leave. The author concludes that issues of power and control were associated with job dissatisfaction, job stress and burnout in nursing practice. However, predictors of intent to leave the job suggest a growing realisation by nurse participants that postgraduate education and nursing research may provide the tools to create positive change in the health care environment and make nursing visible, valued and appropriately rewarded.

  Abstract This book covers obstetrical care from a nursing perspective at the Dunedin Hospital's Maternity Units. The researcher found little information on the two lying-in (maternity) wards of the first two Dunedin Hospitals. The book presents historical records outlining obstetric nursing procedures and maternity culture at the Dunedin Hospitals, The Benevolent Institution, The Batchelor Maternity Hospital, and Queen Mary Hospital. It covers cultural, social and legislative changes over the period, and examines conditions and pay for nursing staff across this time. A chapter on the evolution of baby care looks at changes in acceptable practices around nursery care, breast and bottle feeding, and medical procedures. The book has an extensive list of appendices, including staff lists, training notes for staff, duty lists, and interviews with staff and patients.

  Abstract This systematic review was conducted by the New Zealand Centre for Evidence Based Nursing, a collaborating centre of The Joanna Briggs Institute for Evidence Based Nursing and Midwifery. The aim was to present the best available evidence on interventions, which are effective in preventing or reducing the prevalence of complications associated with suctioning, in hospitalised adult patients with an artificial airway who are breathing spontaneously or are artificially ventilated and who require suctioning. The specific questions addressed were as follows: Which methods of suctioning reduce the prevalence of mucosal trauma or mucosal dysfunction, and promote the removal of respiratory secretions? Which techniques or methods are effective in reducing the occurrence of suctioning -induced hypoxaemia, during or following the suctioning procedure? Which techniques or methods are effective in minimising the haemodynamic or pulmonary complications associated with the suctioning procedure?

The book is a snapshot of nursing initiative and survival through a decade of change in health policy and service funding and delivery. The information was subsequently used to move the health centre service into the new paradigm of primary health care launched in the New Zealand Health Strategy.

  Abstract Undertakes a descriptive exploratory study to ascertain the views of Generation Y NZ Registered Nurses (Gen Y nurses) towards nursing, work and career. Little empirical data exists about why young New Zealanders choose to become nurses in the 21st century. Further, little is known about their future career plans or their intentions to remain in the nursing workforce. Conducts a nationwide on-line survey of 358 Gen Y nurses from late 2009 to early 2010. Reports key findings: young NZ nurses are driven by traditional values of altruism, the desire to care for others, the ability to work closely with people, as well as being able to make a strong contribution to society when deciding to become a nurse, while seeking interesting, challenging and exciting work. Job security, the ongoing demand for nurses, the ability to leave and return, as well as the ability to combine work and family, are also important factors that help them to choose to become nurses.

  Abstract Surveys nurses at two hospitals during April and May of 2012. Uses bivariate correlations, group comparisons, analysis of variance and multiple regression to analyse the results. Notes that nurses were still experiencing negative emotional effects of the earthquakes and aftershocks of the preceding 18 months. Finds empathy levels and burnout levels were lower than the normative mean, and that empathy and burnout were negatively correlated with age and experience.
