Abstract: This thesis describes an exploratory study of registered nurses within a local district health board which pursued 'if' and 'how' professional practice frameworks assisted nurses in their individual professional practice. Self assessment and performance appraisal are identified as critical elements of professional development by the Nursing Council of New Zealand, and this became the focus of the author's research. A qualitative descriptive framework was utilised to explore the research question, where experiences of registered nurses employed within inpatient adult medical and surgical settings were collected through questionnaire. Analysis of the data was through general inductive thematic approach. Eight themes arose, of which, two have sub-themes. The first four themes relate to self assessment and performance appraisal and the second four themes relate to professional practice. The findings from the participant's perspective provide an understanding of how participants' utilised self assessment and performance appraisal to inform their professional practice. There are significant implications for professional practice within the findings of this study, which are presented along with recommendations for future practice, and future avenues for research.

Abstract: The chapter presents the research findings of the 1992-1993 Wellington Nurse Case Management Scheme Project as a distinct model of nurse case management, which introduced a role and form of practice of a family nurse and a diagram of the service delivery structure required for support and relevant for the New Zealand health system reforms.

Abstract: The article is a collaborative writing venture drawing on research findings from New Zealand and Iceland to contribute to the international scholarship on the status and future direction of the nursing discipline. It takes an overview of the international historical trends in nursing knowledge development and proposes a framework for contemporary nursing research that accommodates the past efforts and paradigms of nurse scholars and reflects the changing thinking around the humanness of the health circumstance as the focus of the nursing discipline. It addresses contemporary challenges facing nurses as practitioners and researchers for advancement of practice and delivery of health services, and for influencing health policy.

Abstract: Critical Comparative Nursing Assessment (CCNA) is a theory about how the competence of completing Bachelor of Nursing students in New Zealand is determined. Semi-structured, audio-taped interviews and field notes were used to collect data from twenty-seven nurses with experience in undertaking competency assessment. A Glaserian grounded theory approach was used to guide the data collection and analysis. This utilised the processes of constant comparative analysis, theoretical sampling and saturation to generate a middle range substantive grounded theory. This is presented as a model consisting of four emergent categories that explain how nurses formulate professional judgements about competence. These are a) gathering, which describes the processes used to collect evidence of practice to inform decisions; b) weighing up, which explains how evidence is analysed using the processes of benchmarking and comparative analysis; c) judging brings into focus the tensions inherent in making professional judgements about competence and how nurses formulated these, and d) moderating, which describes the processes nurses use to validate decisions and ensure that professional responsibilities and public safety are upheld. The basic social psychological process of comparing integrates these categories to explain how nurses resolve the tensions associated with making decisions about competence. This research presents a new way of viewing and understanding how nurses assess competence. It identifies where the challengers and tensions related to the assessment of competence lie and suggests strategies that if implemented, the author suggests could further enhance the validity and reliability of assessment outcomes.

Abstract: Mobile computing is rapidly becoming a reality in New Zealand health care settings. Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) are the most frequently used of these mobile technologies, giving nurses access to clinical learning resources, including drug references, medical encyclopaedias and diagnostic information. The implementation of mobile computing at Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec) will ensure graduates of our Bachelor of Nursing Programme are able to meet health care service demands for knowledge in contemporary information technologies as well as the information technology requirements defined by the Nursing Council of New Zealand and the Health Practitioners Competency Assurance Act 2003 for registration as a nurse in New Zealand. This paper presents strategies for the implementation of mobile computing as a core element of the curriculum for the Bachelor of Nursing Programme at Wintec in Hamilton.

Abstract: The Plunket orientation programme, first implemented in 1994, aims to prepare new Plunket Nurses for autonomous practice within the complexity of community based nursing. This study seeks to identify what new Plunket Nurses feel are their orientation needs. An evaluation research approach was used. An examination of the literature explored how orientation is conducted and the needs of nurses in orientation. Key aspects in relation to orientation were identified as including socialisation, job change, new graduates, preceptorship, orientation frameworks and retention. A focus group followed by a postal survey were utilised to collect data from new Plunket Nurses nationwide to ascertain what they thought their orientation needs were. Data analysis was completed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The results of the study identified key orientation needs for new Plunket Nurses. These were an orientation programme, preceptorship, clinical skills teaching, time in own area and beginning autonomous practice, administration needs and support needs. The participants recommended quality preceptorship and early clinical teaching from the Clinical Educator. There was a general dissatisfaction with orientation as it stands in preparing them for their role as a Plunket Nurse. Recommendations to the Plunket Management Team were made based on the results of this study.

Abstract: This research draws on the experiences of four women whilst they were inpatients at the Mental Health Unit in Southland. The Husserlian path of phenomenology was followed and in-depth interviewing used to collect data. Colaizzi's method of analysis enabled accurate interpretation of transcripts. The overall goal of this research was to provide health professionals with an opportunity to inform their practice, based on what consumers were saying about their experience of hospitalisation. Themes emerged through participants relating their experience by using comparisons with either their outside world or previous episodes of hospitalisation. Through analysis, two fundamental structures became evident within the findings. These were 'the environment as containment' and 'the road to recovery'. The author concludes that this study raises significant issues surrounding the experience of hospitalisation at the Mental Health Unit that have implications for future research and for future service delivery.
