Abstract |
Measures the extent to which health-care students began their training with compassionate attributes. Defines compassion as an awareness of others and a desire to help, using a non-judgmental approach. Highlights the significance of compassion in health care. Provides a self-administered 'compassion to others' psychometric scale to measure compassionate attributes to 146 students enrolled in the first semester of nursing, midwifery and social work at the Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec). Analyses data using the SPSS and ANOVA for descriptive statistics and predictive information. |

Abstract |
Investigates the logistics and acceptability of an electronic medication dispenser (EMD) within a home-based medication management service as a substitute for face-to-face home visiting, as a means of reminding elderly clients to take their medication on time. Uses a qualitative usability study methodology to conduct the study, centred on a small group of clients receiving the service from a small group of clients receiving the service from a community nursing organisation in Christchurch. Involves patients, pharmacists, nurses and managers of the community nursing service. Identifies critical processes and protocols required to safely support a wider roll-out of the product within the service. |

Abstract |
This article describes the Nursing and Midwifery Practice Structure, which has been in place at Healthcare Hawkes Bay since 1996. It was developed to provide nurses and midwives in clinical positions with a professional development structure, and uses a framework to recognise and reward competence. It encourages clinical progression and was developed to link nursing competence with remuneration. The Practice Structure, based on the work of Patricia Benner (Benner, 1984), is made up of 4 levels: Beginner/Advance Beginner Practitioner, Competent Practitioner, Proficient Practitioner, Expert Practitioner. The Structure was reviewed in 1998, and a Steering Group was formed to collect feedback from nurses and midwives, identify areas of concern, and make recommendations for improvements. At the time of writing, these recommendations are being implemented and systems are being developed to ensure the Nursing and Midwifery Practice Structure continues to develop. |

Abstract |
This paper presents the findings from research that investigated the feasibility of developing a specialty return to mental health nursing programme in New Zealand. This was achieved through a scoping of existing return to nursing programmes; a survey of non-active nurses; and stakeholder consultation via interviews or focus groups. Existing generic programmes fail to attract non-active nurses wishing to focus on mental health nursing. The non-active nurses survey found 142 nurses who presently would or might possibly return to mental health nursing and participate in a programme. Most stakeholders supported the idea of implementing such a programme. The findings from this research indicate both feasibility and enthusiasm for the introduction of return to mental health nursing programmes. It is recommended that all aspects of this course mirror the service user focused 'recovery paradigm' that is a central tenet in contemporary mental health service delivery. |

Abstract |
Changes brought by the Mental Health Act (MHA) to clinical practice, and some of the problems it has created for nurses, are examined in this article. Compulsory assessment and treatment orders (CATO) and the role of Duly Authorised Officers (DAO), and moral dilemmas that can arise as a consequence of CATOs used by DAOs are examined. The requirement for DAOs to act as patient advocates and to safeguard cultural beliefs are highlighted. The MHA promotes self responsibility and a treatment philosophy rather than detention of the mentally ill. |

It describes PDP and distinguishes it from a clinical career pathway. Specific indicators were used to assess the achievement of the programme, and these are presented. Overall the programme achieved it's outcomes and at a reasonable cost. |

Reports a study exploring family experiences of stroke during the first six months following a stroke. Performs a hermeneutic phenomenological study in which four participants from two Auckland families are interviewed in 2011 and 2012, at three time-intervals within the first six months post-stroke. Identifies three themes of the families' experiences: loss of a life once lived; navigation of an unfamiliar path; re-creation of a sense of normality. Stresses the importance of contact with the health-care team in facilitating the transition to post-stroke life. |

Enrols hospice cancer patients who use syringe drivers to provide continuous delivery of drugs. Conducts interviews with 27 individuals: 12 patient/family caregiver pairs, and 3 caregivers. Uses thematic analysis to apply codes to data to reveal shared versus unique experiences. |

Abstract |
Huarahi whakatu describes a pathway for recognising the expertise of nurses working in kaupapa Maori mental health services and recommends a professional development programme that can lead to advancement along the pathway. An emphasis on dual competencies – cultural and clinical – underlies the rationale for regarding kaupapa Maori mental health nursing as a sub-specialty. Eight levels of cultural competencies and twelve levels of clinical competencies are used to differentiate career stages and it is recommended that movement from one level to another should be matched by increased remuneration. The report also contains a recommended professional development programme to support the operationalisation of the career pathway. |

Abstract |
The author draws on her experience as the 'Paediatric Link Nurse' in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) within a metropolitan area in New Zealand to examine the proposed changes to ventilation practice. Currently, due to ventilator availability and medical and nursing practice, the usual mode of mechanical ventilation is volume-limited with pressure breath triggering. The author suggests this mode can compromise effective ventilation of paediatric patients, due to air leaks around the uncuffed endotracheal tubes of infants and small children. This air leak makes a guaranteed tidal volume almost impossible and can cause ventilator breath stacking and volutrauma. This can impact on the patient's comfort, sedation requirements and airway security, and affects how these patients are nursed. Thus the ventilation of these paediatric patients by the current volume-limiting mode may be not always be optimal for the infant/child. A new ventilator will be available to the unit, with a pressure-controlled, flow breath-triggering mode available. The author critiques the possibility of using this mode of ventilation, suggesting how this will impact on nursing practice in ICU, and of the education and knowledge that will be required. She suggests this change to ventilation practice may improve comfort and safety for the intubated child/infant, through the delivery of an optimal mode of ventilation. |

The purpose of this article is to review evidence about nurse workload, staffing, skill mix, turnover, and organisational characteristics' effect on outcomes; discuss methodological considerations in this research; discuss research initiatives currently under way; review policy initiatives in different countries; and make recommendations where more research is needed. Overall, an understanding of the relationships among nurse staffing and organisational climate to patient safety and health outcomes is beginning to emerge in the literature. Little is known about nursing turnover and more evidence is needed with consistent definitions and control of underlying patient characteristics. Research and policy initiatives in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States are summarised. |

Abstract |
This report reviews relevant literature pertaining to clinical career pathways and associated core competencies for nursing in New Zealand. The review identifies and analyses existing clinical career pathways for nurses and mental health workers in New Zealand, paying particular attention to the content, structure, strengths, criticisms and applicability to the development of a clinical career pathway for Maori registered nurses to work in Maori mental health (NGO organisations). This report is part of Te Rau Matatini's current work on the development of a career pathway for Maori registered nurses with mental health work experience to work in NGO, community settings. It is a preliminary report, based on existing literature. A subsequent report was planned detailing the career pathway developed by Te Rau Matatini, with strong guidance and input from Maori mental health nurses and the wider Maori mental health sector. |
