Abstract: The study was undertaken as a project for the International Year of the Child. There was a need for information to identify what health care in needed in schools and to contribute to a review of the role of the nurses. Teachers and principals of all primary schools of the Wellington area were surveyed to describe the health care being provided and needed. Recommendations were made for school nurses who would support the health-related teaching by teachers, provide first aid and advice, and take an extended role for family health operating from a clinic in the school.

Litchfield, M. (1997). The process of nursing partnership in family health (Vol. 4).
Abstract: The study reconceptualises the process of nursing practice where health is expanding consciousness. The praxis methodology and design derive from the findings of the previous study (Litchfield, 1993) through which a framework for personal practice was articulated. The philosophical premises were hermeneutic and dialogic reflecting a narrative orientation within a participatory paradigm. Ontology and epistemology merge and language is fundamental. The findings from this subsequent study depict the process of modeling practice as a tetrahedron to show inter-relatedness of four facets, each defined completely by the others: partnership, dialogue, pattern recognition and health as dialectic. Five young families with complex health circumstances were preferred by Plunket Nurses and visited at hole to talk about health and the family. Th e process of health patterning ended with indication of insight as the potential for action; the partnership ended as the closure of the initial contract to provide a summary text to the family. Transformative change in family living was identified. The continuous analysis of the scripts of the evolving conversations and summary text showed the relational, dialogic processes were identified as vision – finding purpose to act in the here-and-now against the backdrop of past and potential of the future; and community – a sense of being connected, participant and relevant in society. Abstract: The New Zealand Nurses organsation agreed to become the accrediting body for nurses in NZ in 1994 and Susanne Trim, NZNO Professional Nursing Adviser, worked with the National Practice Nurse Section to develop and pilot a model for accreditation.A consultative process was used to develop a framework and process during 1995 and this was unanimously endorsed in the April 1996 National Practice Nurse Section AGM.Implementation occurred from May 1996 to March 1998 with a comprehensive evaluation of the model collection of data from practice nurse applicants, non-applicants, the Practice Nurse Accreditation Board, National PN Sections and the project co-ordinator.The number of applications received exceeded expectations 212 (14% NZNO practice nurse members). There was a high level of satisfaction expressed by applicants.A number of content issues were identified during the pilot as needing review, clarification and amendment. These were of a minor nature rather than recommended changes to the structure itself.The accreditation Board processes were modified part way through the implementation to improve efficiencies and were found to be satisfactory. The training model and timing were appropriate.Administrative support and central co-ordination through designated NZNO staff member proved to be time consuming but vital.Practice Nurses embraced accreditation however as a group they have some minor unique characteristics. This should caution NZNO to proceed gradually with accreditation of other Section Nurses and monitor progress closely

Abstract: In New Zealand, there is a festering debate over a theory-practice gap in nursing. Joint appointments present as a potential solution to this issue. Joint appointments refer to a variety of arrangements whereby concurrent employment occurs within an educational institution and a clinical setting.Advantages for the appointees include job satisfaction, and professional growth. Clinical credibility for nurse educators enables improved facilitation of student learning. In clinical areas, benefits in patient care are associated with the marrying of academic rigor with clinical practice. Some appointees input into staff development, act as consultants on nursing issues and undertake research. Disadvantages in the concept focus on role conflict (incongruity between the roles) and role ambiguity (lack of clarity concerning expectations). Success of the ventures depends upon the personal attributes of appointees; realistic expectations; flexibility to allow the concept to evolve; and support from colleagues and management.This research describes a case study of a joint appointment between a nurse lecturer and a senior staff nurse in an acute forensic psychiatry unit. Advantages, disadvantages and reasons for success are discussed in relation to the literature findings. The discussion focuses on the need to develop research methodology to further clarify potential benefits and advantages

Abstract: Changes brought by the Mental Health Act (MHA) to clinical practice, and some of the problems it has created for nurses, are examined in this article. Compulsory assessment and treatment orders (CATO) and the role of Duly Authorised Officers (DAO), and moral dilemmas that can arise as a consequence of CATOs used by DAOs are examined. The requirement for DAOs to act as patient advocates and to safeguard cultural beliefs are highlighted. The MHA promotes self responsibility and a treatment philosophy rather than detention of the mentally ill.

This technique is seen as a means of narrowing the gap between theory and practice which resulted when nurse training was transferred from hospitals to polytechnics. He highlights the need to develop research methodology to clarify potential benefits of this approach.

Abstract: This article examines the implications for nurses of not-for-resuscitation orders and orders to withdraw treatment. The rights of patients and correct procedure in the case of not-for-resuscitation or do-not-resuscitate orders are considered, as well as the ethical dilemma facing nurses in cases of the withdrawal of treatment. Guidelines are offered to assist nurses in reaching an ethical decision to withdraw treatment. Euthanasia is defined and case law decisions on not-for-resuscitation and treatment withdrawal are cited.
