Abstract: Charts a detailed description and analysis of how aspects of the strategies of the Nurse Safe Staffing Project work in everyday hospital settings. Argues that nurses' situated knowledge and work are being organised and overridden by competing institutional knowledge and priorities in a competitive institutional environment. Demonstrates the consequences for nurses, patients and staffing strategies. Conducts 30 interviews with 26 participants, including frontline nurses and participants in safe staffing projects.

Abstract: A discussion of the increased use of 'casual' nursing staff (those nurses employed on a casual or 'per diem' basis) is presented. Reference is made to related literature, together with consideration of the implications associated with this trend. This issue has international significance, with the increased use of casual staff being widely recognised. A New Zealand perspective is included, with the provision of nursing care at Christchurch Hospital presented to illustrate certain aspects of the discussion. The impact of changing health-care systems and increased emphasis on efficiency and accountability are identified. This change to workplace practice will inevitably affect nursing; possible future developments are considered.

Abstract: In this report, the New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) releases the findings from its first-ever members' employment survey. The questionnaire, based on the United Kingdom?s Royal College of Nurse?s annual survey (which has been running for 21 years) covered core employment issues: employment agreements, hours, pay, job change, along with demographic details, as well as questions around plans for and perceptions of working life for over 800 NZNO members.

Abstract: Explores whether there is a relationship between staffing and quality indicators in residential care of older people, in both rest homes and continuing-care hospitals. Conducts a longitudinal survey of 18 residential-care rest homes and 16 continuing-care hospitals in the greater Auckland region to explore the relationship between direct-care staffing levels, skill mix and quality indicators. Collects data over a 6-month period on type of staffing, including registered nurses, enrolled nurses, and support workers; quality indicators, including falls, new fractures, pressure ulcers, weight loss, urinary tract infections (UTI), poly-pharmacy or multiple medications, presence of indwelling catheters and use of daily restraints. Uses logistic analysis to analyse the inverse relationship between staffing levels and adverse events, and whether there is an association between staff type and the incidence of the five quality indicators.
