Abstract: Investigates factors supporting Maori student engagement, retention and success in nursing education. Explores the experiences, perceptions and insights of Maori nursing students enrolled in Te Ohanga Mataora: Bachelor of Health Sciences Maori Nursing at Te Whare Wananga O Awanuiarangi. Conducts semi-structured face-to-face interviews with 12 full-time Maori undergraduate nursing students, highlighting both positive and negative factors in academic engagement.

Abstract: Investigates nurses' catheter management practices, by means of an audit, as documented in a newly-introduced self-administered indwelling catheter-management checklist incorporating four components of catheter care in a catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) prevention bundle. Identifies these components of the bundle of care as: minimisation of inappropriate catheter use, aseptic insertion of catheters, adherence to catheter maintenance guidelines, and ongoing review and evaluation of catheter necessity. Shows that implementation of care components decreases bacteriuria rates and CAUTI when used together in standardised clinical checklists and performed collectively by nurses. Employs a quantitative research design as part of a mixed-methods study conducted at two surgical wards in a public hospital in Auckland where 50 nurses completed 175 checklists.

Abstract: Investigates the attitudes of RN prescribers towards prescribing antibiotics, in the context of increasing antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Focuses on six nurse prescribers in primary health and specialty teams, who are permitted to prescribe antibiotics, asking about their clinical assessments of patients and safety considerations of prescribed antibiotics.

Abstract: Investigates the effects of participation in the Intensive Care Unit Randomised Trial Comparing Two Approaches to Oxygen therapy (ICU-ROX) randomised controlled trial, on attitudes and practices in relation to ICU oxygen therapy. Distributes a practitioner attitudes survey to 112 specialist doctors and 153 ICU nurses. Performs both inception and retrospective cohort studies using the Australian and NZ ICU adult patient database before, and post-publication of the ICU-ROX trial results.

Abstract: Investigates the logistics and acceptability of an electronic medication dispenser (EMD) within a home-based medication management service as a substitute for face-to-face home visiting, as a means of reminding elderly clients to take their medication on time. Uses a qualitative usability study methodology to conduct the study, centred on a small group of clients receiving the service from a small group of clients receiving the service from a community nursing organisation in Christchurch. Involves patients, pharmacists, nurses and managers of the community nursing service. Identifies critical processes and protocols required to safely support a wider roll-out of the product within the service.

Abstract: It is evident from the prevalence of items in the popular press and incased research by health professional that, over the last two decades, menopause as been discussed more openly. However, medical information is still largely oriented toward menopause as a disease with emphasis on the pharmacological interventions needed to correct the disease. Literature in medical and nursing journals is also predominantly oriented towards menopause as a state of oestrogen, nurse researchers and feminists writers are challenging this viewsThe aim of the research was to discover how women gain knowledge about menopause, and how they make decisions about “managing” their menopause. In the study knowledge was defined as being more than information. It is seen as being more than information. It is seen as understanding derived from synthesis of data about menopause collected from various sources. Eleven women aged 46-55 recruited through a letter in the researcher's local newspaper, were interviewed. The resulting data was analysed by the constant comparison method as used in grounded theory.A descriptive model was developed including the basic social process of “integrating menopause into midlife”. A tertiary level of education and good social support were found to be associated with the women being seekers of knowledge about their menopause. These women, the majority of the participants, revealed themselves as being self-controlling with respect to their menopause. Among the few who had allowed their menopause to be managed by others, if they experienced adverse effects of the treatment, then there was a move toward greater self management.,Generally, nurses were not seen by the participants as possible sources of information. That finding highlights menopause as an area of health education in which nurses have the potential to play a more active role

Abstract: Maintains that achieving health equity for indigenous populations requires indigenous nursing leadership to develop and implement new systems of care delivery. Develops a consensus among indigenous nurse academics from Australia, Canada, NZ and the US on the three themes of nursing leadership, to redress colonial injustices, to contribute to models of care and to enhance the indigenous workforce. Highlights five indigenous strategies for influencing outcomes: nationhood and reconcilation as levers for change; nursing leadership; workforce strategies; culturally-safe practices and models of care; nurse activism.
