Abstract: Eighteen months after the first of many large earthquakes, Christchurch-based home health care provider Nurse Maude surveyed staff to identify the impact on the well-being of their mainly elderly clients. Responses from 168 staff identified five key issues. These were: mental health, anxiety, and depression, symptoms similar to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); unsafe environments; loneliness and isolation; difficulty coping with change; and poor access to services. To meet the needs of clients in this challenging environment, staff felt they needed more time to care, including listening to stories, calming clients and dealing with clients who had become slower and more cautious. Damaged and blocked roads, and the fact that many clients moved house without warning, added to the time it took to deliver care in the home. This survey has helped Nurse Maude build on its initial post-earthquake responses to better meet the needs of clients and support health-care workers in this stressful environment.

Abstract: Maternity services in New Zealand have undergone some fundamental and unique changes over the last few years. The promotion of competition among providers for clients have had repercussions on the way that maternity hospitals offers services to women. In adapting to this change, it is important that 'the baby is not thrown out with the bathwater'. Unfortunately the most commonly used indicators, and the standard “Patient Satisfaction Survey”, neither of which contain many valuable clues for maternity facility providers to determine the quality of their service from the consumer's perspective. The need was identified for the development of quality indicators to evaluate maternity hospital care. Closely related to this was the need to determine of how dependable providers are at determining what consumers would describe as an optimal maternity hospital service

Henderson, H. M. What is the public image of the nurse?.
Abstract: Taxes et al (1965) suggested that “people are characterised in terms of their vocations. We form an image of an occupation early in life and tend to maintain this image.” My research project used a descriptive methodology using a postal questionnaire for 100 subjects within the Wellington region. A 60% return eventuated and results interpreted as positive /negative response, grouped and discussed. The sample constituted a cross section of the publics view on the image of a Nurse. This research was performed as a requirement for an academic experience as part of a Post Graduate Diploma

Abstract: This article discusses a child/adolescent-centred primary nocturnal enuresis program and service that is administered by a group of public health nurses in South Auckland. Enuresis is the involuntary passing of urine. Many children and adolescents who are nocturnal enuretics exhibit behaviours such as low self-esteem, withdrawal, less ambition and increased anxiety. These children are often low achievers within the school system and become a problem for their family and school.

Abstract: The author, an occupational health nurse, examines rationale for and effectiveness of the pre-employment assessment, which has become an accepted practice. Reasons for doing assessments include the reduction of risk to the employer from lower accident rates and absenteeism, compliance with legislative requirements and the provision of baseline health measures for general health surveillance. The costs of the screening process, along with the benefits are weighed up, in conjunction with international research in the area. The author found little research on the process in New Zealand. The opportunity for primary health care and health promotion practice as an aspect of this screening is highlighted as an important, though underestimated, benefit. Regular auditing is recommended to ensure that the outcomes of the process meet the criteria required.

Primary nursing as a framework within which nurses deliver patient care has been a nursing care delivery system of choice in New Zealand for the last two decades. A number of studies have been carried out, with a review of the literature suggesting inconclusive support for this delivery system over other functional nursing care models. However, there is support for the philosophy underpinning this model, with documented evidence that this framework can help nurses achieve a degree of professional development and autonomous practice that other models cannot. Using documented information created during the move from one model of nursing care to another this work evaluates what were the drivers for the change, how it was managed and what the outcomes were.
Findings indicated that this change project was a success. Analysis of the data collected pre and post implementation indicated some positive shifts, but more importantly it was the information gathered from both patients and nurses that gave creditability to the new model of nursing care.
