Abstract |
The author presents a case study of a joint appointment between a nurse lecturer and a staff nurse in an acute forensic psychiatry unit. He explores the advantages, disadvantages and reasons for success in relation to the findings of a survey of the literature on joint appointments. This technique is seen as a means of narrowing the gap between theory and practice which resulted when nurse training was transferred from hospitals to polytechnics. He highlights the need to develop research methodology to clarify potential benefits of this approach. |

Abstract |
This article reports data from 15 schools of nursing, surveyed to identify difficulties experienced by nurse educators with respect to entry, progression and programme completion of undergraduate nursing students. Risk assessment, along with a lack of clear policy and procedures were found to be the main problem areas. Difficulties were exacerbated for educators when there were challenges to their professional judgement, either from the Nursing Council of New Zealand or from within their own institution. The authors argue for more recognition of the dual role of nurse educators, and greater clarification of the Nursing Council of New Zealand role in regulating the student's programme entry and progression, and ultimate admission to the Register. It is suggested that the recently passed Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act (2003) provides nursing with an opportunity to address some of these issues. |

Abstract |
This article reports on a descriptive study undertaken within a school of nursing where the author was formerly employed. The study explored the role of the lecturer within the preceptorship model of clinical teaching. It uses an exploratory/descriptive, qualitative approach to interviewing 12 lecturers. The findings demonstrate the educational orientation of the lecturer role and also highlight the tension that continues to exist between the world of education and the world of practice. |

This article positions clinical practice/education exchange (CPEE) within nursing literature and presents narrative accounts from a nurse educator and clinician who exchanged jobs for one year. This type of exchange, between education institutes and service areas where students are placed, is a new concept. The aim is to enhance student learning and facilitating meaningful links between theory and practice for them. |

Abstract |
The author reviews the report 'Fitness for Practice' by the United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting (UKCC) noting many areas of relevance for New Zealand educators in outlining possible strategies for nursing education. Discussion of some of the recommendations is put in the context of a strategic review of undergraduate nursing education recently commissioned by the Nursing Council of New Zealand. Issues such as recruitment and access to education; retention; clinical assessment and placements; clinical skill acquisition and partnership are valid concerns for educators here also. Internationally, the author suggests, the commonalties in issues of concern lend validity to the concept of the global village and the necessity for a global perspective in health care workforce planning, including educational preparation. |

Notes the associated themes of the effect of negative stereotyping on male nurses' career choice, and their resistance to the stereotype of normative masculinity. This paper analyses how the programme co-ordinator for a diploma in mental health nursing used the Instructional Design process in order to identify aspects of teaching and learning that could further enhance the student development of critical thinking. Theoretical understandings of constructivist learning environments are outlined, and translated to this programme. Tools and techniques such as learning strategies, scaffolding, coaching and modelling are explained. |
