Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate how the New Zealand style of problem based learning was developing students' understanding and integration of knowledge. The 'pure' problem based learning process has been adapted to move students gradually from teacher direction to taking responsibility for their learning. Two cycles of an action research method were used, involving 4 lecturers and 17 students. Data was collected both quantitatively and qualitatively over a 16-week period. Findings indicated the importance of: explaining the purpose and process of problem based learning; communicating in detail the role of both students and lecturers; keeping communication lines open; addressing timetabling issues and valuing this method of learning for nursing practice. Implications for nursing education are addressed.

Abstract: A study of 33 adult patients – 20 Anglo – Australian, 13 Yugoslav- who were admitted for arranged abdominal surgery to three Australian hospitals between January and June 1980. Focusing on the role of cultural factors in the experience of post operative pain the study confirmed the existence of some behavioral differences between Anglo – Australian and Yugoslav patients in terms of their responses to pain. The greatest degree of difference between the two groups however was found in their underlying attitudes to pain

Abstract: This article looks at the concept of autonomy particularly in relation to the population of older persons living in residential care settings. Abstract: Considers whether the Canterbury Dedicated Education Unit model of clinical teaching and learning can support graduate registered nurses in their first year of practice. Uses a descriptive exploratory case-study approach to gather data via three focus groups with a total of eleven participants. Undertakes thematic analysis to identify patterned meaning across the dataset from which two primary themes emerge: support, and recruitment and retention. Identifies five associated sub-themes: peer support, organisational support, liaison nurse support, team support for the graduate registered nurses, and team support for the staff. Reveals the significant contribution made by the Nurse Entry-to-Practice Programme Liaison Nurse as a conflict broker.

Abstract: Investigates nurses' catheter management practices, by means of an audit, as documented in a newly-introduced self-administered indwelling catheter-management checklist incorporating four components of catheter care in a catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) prevention bundle. Identifies these components of the bundle of care as: minimisation of inappropriate catheter use, aseptic insertion of catheters, adherence to catheter maintenance guidelines, and ongoing review and evaluation of catheter necessity. Shows that implementation of care components decreases bacteriuria rates and CAUTI when used together in standardised clinical checklists and performed collectively by nurses. Employs a quantitative research design as part of a mixed-methods study conducted at two surgical wards in a public hospital in Auckland where 50 nurses completed 175 checklists.

Abstract: Explores whether there is a relationship between staffing and quality indicators in residential care of older people, in both rest homes and continuing-care hospitals. Conducts a longitudinal survey of 18 residential-care rest homes and 16 continuing-care hospitals in the greater Auckland region to explore the relationship between direct-care staffing levels, skill mix and quality indicators. Collects data over a 6-month period on type of staffing, including registered nurses, enrolled nurses, and support workers; quality indicators, including falls, new fractures, pressure ulcers, weight loss, urinary tract infections (UTI), poly-pharmacy or multiple medications, presence of indwelling catheters and use of daily restraints. Uses logistic analysis to analyse the inverse relationship between staffing levels and adverse events, and whether there is an association between staff type and the incidence of the five quality indicators.
