Abstract: Argues that the concept of cultural safety (CS) has been appropriated from an indigenous-led bicutural context to an inclusive cross-cultural framework for working with diverse patient populations. Investigates nurses' understanding of the 'Guidelines for Cultural Safety, the Treaty of Waitangi and Maori Health in Nursing Education and Practice' published in 2011 by the Nursing Council of NZ. Conducts a mixed-methods survey using both closed and open-ended questions to gauge nurses' confidence in applying the guidelines and their view of their relevance. Describes differences between NZ Registered Nurses (RN) and Internationally Qualified Nurses (IQN) in their understanding of CS. Argues that the CS model should be by Maori, for Maori.

Abstract: Investigates wheether the impact of a co-located psychological service to which Primary Care Providers cn refer patients with mild to moderate mental health needs, would impact on the well-being of the providers at work. Describes Focused Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (FACT) services delivered by psychologists working in a a large primary care practice in the lower North Island. Conducts interviews with GPs, nurse practitioners (NP) and registered nurses (RN), analysing the data using thematic analysis. Finds an inverse relationship between the FACT service and the well-being of staff.

Highlights the need for nursing to broaden concepts of health, community, and public health nursing, to focus on issues of capacity-building, community needs, and a broader understanding of the social, political, cultural, and economic contexts of the communities primary health-care nurses serve. Explores how health is experienced by Maori women during in-depth interviews using critical ethnographic method, underpinned by a Maori-centred approach. Articulates a model of health that is a dynamic process based on the restoration and maintenance of cultural integrity, derived from the principle of self-determination.

Conducts interviews with a total of 13 NPs and four NP candidates.

Employs Bourdieu's 'Theory of Practice' to explore health care teams as competitive social spaces where health professionals vie to establish social position and authority. Recruits three health care teams representing primary health and specialty practice for interviews and observation. Highlights three themes from the data: social topography, working with an RN prescriber; and patterns of communication.

Abstract: The researchers evaluate and compare the organisation of general practice in the UK and New Zealand. A key aim of the Primary Health Care Strategy is a reduction in health inequalities. Locally, some nurse leaders suggest that changing nurse practice employment from general practitioners to Primary Health Organisations will achieve this aim. The authors take lessons from the UK and suggest that nurses organising themselves into peer groups, remuneration of general practices for the attainment of positive patient outcomes, and a statutory duty of clinical governance, all contributed to the development of practice nurses' roles and expansion of numbers of nurse practitioners in general practice. Nurses have become partners with general practitioners in general practice in the UK, which the authors suggest is a much preferable alternative for some than employment by a Primary Health Organisation.

Abstract: This article describes the move in mental health from institutional care to community arrangements. It draws on international literature and New Zealand health policy, which gives increased emphasis to the role of the primary health care sector in responding to mental health issues. These issues include the need for health promotion, improved detection and treatment of mild to moderate mental illness, and provision of mental health care to some of those with severe mental illness who traditionally receive care in secondary services. These developments challenge specialist mental health nurses to develop new roles which extend their practice into primary health care. In some parts of New Zealand this process has been under way for some time in the form of shared care projects. However developments currently are ad hoc and leave room for considerable development of specialist mental health nursing roles, including roles for nurse practitioners in primary mental health care.

Abstract: This article describes the implementation of a nurse-led, dedicated support network and service for children with a diagnosis of retinoblastoma and their families. Nurses with an interest in retinoblastoma at an Auckland Ophthalmology Department realised that the service provided was not meeting the needs of patients and families, particularly since the numbers had increased over the past two years. This article outlines the development of a cost-effective approach that improved the service.

Abstract: This paper reports on a study of the maternity care experiences of women from Goa (India) in Auckland. Multiple research strategies were incorporated into the process to prevent reproduction of deficiency discourses. Interviews were carried out with Goan women who had experiences of migration and motherhood. The findings revealed that as a consequence of motherhood and migration, migrant mothers were able to reclaim and re-invent innovative solutions. Nurses and other health professionals can have a significant role in supporting women and their families undergoing the transition to parenthood in a new country and develop their knowledge and understanding of this dual transition.

A postal questionnaire was distributed to rural general practice managers, GPs, nurses, community pharmacy managers and pharmacists in November 2005. The self-reported data included information on demographics, country of training, years in practice, business ownership, hours worked including on-call, and intention to leave rural practice.

Shaw, S. (2007). Constructing media images of nursing: How does the media represent nurses when reporting on nurse prescribing? Kai Tiaki: Nursing New Zealand, 13(1), 16–18.
Abstract: This research presents a discourse analysis of articles published in the New Zealand Herald between October 1999 and September 2005. The terms “nurse prescribing” and “prescribing fights” identified seven articles published which referred specifically to this issue. They were predominantly editorial comments and statements attributed to senior doctors. Examples of comments from these articles are presented and discussed in this article, and three inter-related themes are identified – competence, responsibility and competition. Discussion on competence centred on education, skill and experience level of nurses, as described by editorial comment and senior doctors. Positive international research and experience of nurse prescribing did not feature. A number of comments in the articles analysed could be seen to represent concerns about competition between medicine and nursing. One interpretation of the comments contained in these articles is to see medical practitioner groups defending their status and desire to define and control nursing practice. The media has the power to select the information conveyed and, in these instances, appears to have demonstrated a bias towards the medical community's perspective.

Abstract: It has been shown that intensive management of diabetes with type 2 diabetes is effective and has led to wider use of insulin. The conversion of patients from oral medication to insulin is usually managed in primary care. The study discussed here aimed to explore how patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) perceived insulin. The study was conducted in 2009 in an urban general practice in a large town in New Zealand with more than 300 patients with type 2 diabetes. A qualitative study was conducted with face-to-face interviews with 13 participants. The question focused on insulin initiation, lifestyle and routine. The transcribed responses were subject to thematic anaylsis. Interviews showed participants felt restricted by the prospect and eventuality of the routine and restrictions of being on insulin. Results show there needs to be a greater emphasis on the disease being progressive. This study provides the ground work for developing resources that will benefit patients with T2DM.

Abstract: There is a considerable body of literature discussing the stressors experienced by nurses and other health professionals when caring for those who are terminally ill and dying. Also, a number of articles offer suggestions, including the views of staff, as to what type of professional and organisational support is required when working in this often demanding specialty. There are, however, very few reports of assessment of the effectiveness of such supportive interventions and in particular, the impact of such support on the quality of patient care. This literature review examines any reported relationships between the quality of nursing provided by palliative care nurses and the staff support received by those nurses.
