Abstract: This study investigated issues surrounding the high numbers of preventable admissions of young children with acute illnesses, particularly amongst Maori and Pacific children. It focuses on what happens once these children are discharged. Its aims were to find out what the expressed needs of parents were, as they cared for their child, once home. Whilst there has been a small amount of international research undertaken in this area, there is little known about expressed parent need in the New Zealand context. This exploratory descriptive study involved parents of under five year old children, who had been admitted to a hospital, with one of five acute illnesses. Eighteen parents were surveyed over the telephone. This study found the parents expressed a need for reassurance and advice once home, and that they worried about their child getting sick again. It highlighted gaps in discharge planning and support. None of the parents had received a written discharge plan for their child. Only five parents had received either a contact number for advice or a referral back to their primary care provider. This study found that whilst some parents considered their discharge needs had been met, others considered that they had not. Four local discharge practice opportunities to support these families were recommended, these included, providing parents and caregivers with an individualised written discharge plan, giving a contact number for advice after discharge, offering a follow-up phone call in the first 48 hours, and ensuring that all children have a referral back to their primary health care provider. Areas for further research were highlighted, including the need for a larger study to explore and compare the needs of rural and urban parents, and Maori and Pacific parents.

Abstract: Aims to explore the influences on health and health care engagement from the experiences of urban Maori women using Kokiri Marae Health and Social Services (KMHSS), Lower Hutt, NZ. Conducts unstructured interviews which are analysed thematically. Employs the nursing theory of cultural safety, Kawa Whakaruruhau, to inform a qualitative approach to the examination of the historical, social, cultural, economic, political, racial and gendered factors contributing to Maori women's health and health-care engagement. Makes recommendations for nursing practice, research site and research.

Abstract: Examines the evolution of the enrolled nurse in NZ from the perspective of a registered nurse who has worked with enrolled nurses in both Britain and NZ. Analyses key documents from a critical perspective to consider the positioning of enrolled nurses in NZ, particularly from the point of view of the large number of Maori enrolled nurses. Makes recommendations for a more equitable future for those who undertake enrolled nursing.

Abstract: Examines the experiences of parents and nurses in caring for a child following invasive Slipped Upper Femoral Epiphysis (SUFE) repair. Conducts semi-structured interviews with parents of five children, predominantly Māori or Pacific, who underwent SUFE repair, and five paediatric nurses caring for the children and their families in the hospital ward. Offers two perspectives of the journey for these parents following such an injury, from the child's hospitalisation to caring for these children once they are home. Presents and contrasts these perspectives, revealing insights into the parents' ongoing need for support, information and planning for care, and nurses' efforts to meet these needs. Presents implications for nursing practice.

Abstract: Presents the findings of an integrative literature review exploring the possibility of applying Historical Trauma Theory to nursing practice. Uses Kaupapa Maori research methodology to apply Historical Trauma Theory to health care practice, in a Maori context. Considers how trauma theory can be used to support Wilson and Barton's Te Kapunga Putohe nursing model.

Abstract: Performs an explanatory sequential mixed-methods study comprising a questionnaire followed by interviews, to understand the experiences and preparedness of nurse educators in working with Maori nursing students. Demonstrates that throughout NZ, nursing schools and the educational institutes in which they are situated are informed by a range of strategies aimed at supporting Maori learners. Finds from interviews that environments encompassing te ao Maori (the Maori world) and staff practises that aligned with this were enabling for Maori nursing students.

Abstract: Examines whether the Family Partnership model could be considered a model for cultural responsiveness while simultaneously providing a platform for more accurate assessment of the cultural competence of Plunket nurse practice. Determines the relationship between Family Partnership training for Plunket nurses and Maori child health outcomes. Distributes an online survey to Plunket nurses who had completed the training and to a group who had not. Conducts 10 observations and interviews with Plunket nurses and Maori clients. Presents the findings in three areas: Plunket nurse practice, client experience, and the impact of Family Partnership training on Plunket as an organisation.

Abstract: Identifies how traditional nursing practice in Maori communities may be enhanced. Highlights the need for nursing to broaden concepts of health, community, and public health nursing, to focus on issues of capacity-building, community needs, and a broader understanding of the social, political, cultural, and economic contexts of the communities primary health-care nurses serve. Explores how health is experienced by Maori women during in-depth interviews using critical ethnographic method, underpinned by a Maori-centred approach. Articulates a model of health that is a dynamic process based on the restoration and maintenance of cultural integrity, derived from the principle of self-determination.
