Abstract: Assesses the safety of actively avoiding endotracheal suction in post-operative cardiac surgical patients ventilated for less than 12 hours. Describes local endotracheal suction practice, and elucidates patient experience of the endotracheal tube and endotracheal suction. Conducts an observational audit describing endotracheal sucion practice within the cardiothoracic and vascular intensive care unit in Auckland City Hospital. Undertakes a prospective, non-inferiority, randomised controlled trial investigating the safety of avoiding endotracheal suction.

Abstract: Performs a retrospective audit of eight Diabetes Nurse-Led Clinics (DNLC) in two regions of DNLC provision in Auckland over a 12-month period from 2016-2017, at which 707 patients were booked for appointments. Undertakes a nested sampling of two randomly-selected DNLCs, in which 71 participants were invited to participate. Explores patients' perspectives of attendance or non-attendance at their booked appointments. Examines whether patients perceive any benefits of attendance at the clinics, and identifies factors that might improve their experiences with DNLCs.

Abstract: Explores volunteer actor patients' contribution to developing nursing students' clinical skills from the patient actors' perspective within a simulation learning environment. Describes how actor patients work with nursing students during simulation, providing feedback following each simulation. Conducts focus group interviews with four of these actor patients about their interactions with students, communication, the provision of realism, student engagement, and feedback to students.
